Delima binti Suen's mother was an exceptional woman in nearly every way, save for perhaps the most important one. At least, most important to Delima.
Gather round! Gather round! Today, we tell the story of Sang Monyet! However, even the most incredible of stories often have humble beginnings and this one is no exception. Overshadowed all her life, first by her mother ... then by her rival. Her deeds were not many until much, much later and yet the beginning of her story still must be told. Delima binti Suen's mother was an exceptional woman in nearly every way. She was a warrior that held the golden image of a free Malaysia, of Revolution above even her own life ... and even the life of her daughter.

Although, perhaps some context is needed first.

The nation of Malaysia has had a tumultuous history. A military junta took control of the government in the 2010s after worldwide unrest, however they were quickly deposed by a communist party. Within only a few years, the counter revolutionaries, largely supported by the rural poor of the nation had formed themselves into a fighting force. The soldiers of the dictatorship were demoralized by the sudden and fierce resistance and by 2016, the communist party of Malaysia took control of the nation. Unfortunately, pride goeth before the fall. Eager to strip their neighbors of corporate shackles, the communist party marched against the then nation of Singapore, which was a nation in name only, propped up by the Mitsuhama corporation. The army of ill-equipped farmers were no match for the corporate military, who easily repelled them. From there on out, the nation was kneecapped by heavy tariffs and brigades from Mitsuhama, forever stunting their growth as a nation. Eventually, the communist party was entirely phased out in the 2030s after political action from the Japanocorps and a constitutional monarchy like the days of old was established. A fitting lie for the corporate string-pullers to wield to falsely proclaim the freedom of a country.

This did not stop the Malaysian Communist Party.

They bid their time, gathering support and soldiers in the shadows for years. In the 2050s they struck once again. Civil unrest, fighting in the streets of the capital. Amidst them, one woman stood above all others. Suen YaJie was a powerful warrior and a more powerful adept. Proudly born among the Malaysian Chinese, she was able to cross cultural boundaries and helped to create the Malaysian Communist Party as it existed then, an organization that welcomed all that supported a free Malaysia, for and by the people, free of corporate shackles. She abandoned her family and her SIN in her fight and it was with the support of her and other powerful martial artists that the communist fighters were able to maintain any ground whatsoever.

It was this very strength that attracted the bugs.

They took root among the party, drawn to the fighting and the autonomous structure of the party cells. This allowed them to infiltrate and inhabitate entire key cells. As soon as YaJie stumbled upon one of these, she stood in stunned horror at the sight of her comrades being worn like coats. That almost cost her life, as a surprise attack from one of the mantises nearly cut her in half, she only survived thanks to Azhar bin Intan, an old comrade of hers who had been loyal to the party his entire, life, who continued to fight into his old age. Wounded, Suen YaJie vowed revenge.

From then on, the Malaysian Communist Party was forced to fight a war on two fronts. On one side, against the government forces who were soon bolstered by interpol in order to fight the bugs and on the other were the quicky spreading spreading invae. It was a fight that they could not possibly win. They were beaten and beaten very badly, escaping into the rainforest to lick their wounds. The government gave chase and continued to give chase for the next few decades but the insurgents knew the rainforest well and would not be wiped out so easily.

Half a decade later, Delima was born. She never knew her father, her mother broke tradition and named her after herself. She was told later in life that the man was killed by government forces a few years after her birth. To be fair, she didn't know her mother much either. She was out most of the time on duties incomprehensible to the mind of a child. She wasn't always gone, though. Sometimes she would return and tell her stories. About herself, about the party, from myth and folklore and song. When her mother wasn't around, she was raised by Azhar, who was getting too old to properly fight and yet stubbornly held onto life, so eager was he to see his protege's child live and thrive.

Unfortunately, that means making hard decisions. When she was 8, in the 2070s, the party began moving to militarize once again. Azhar feared that Delima would make an attempt to fight and begged YaJie to send the child away, to safety.

She agreed.

The Knights Hospitaller, old contacts of the party who had helped to distribute medical supplies to the party to distribute to the rural poor that were indiscriminately targeted by government forces in the crossfire, were contacted. They agreed to take in the child. Azhar, deciding that his fighting days were behind him and being easily seasick and not suited for naval life aboard New Rhodes, decided to live out his golden years in the NAN. Nevertheless, he remained in constant matrix contact with Delima as she grew up.

That is the story of how Delima binti Suen came into the care of Knights Hospitaller but it is far, far from the end of her story.

Delima was obviously put to work for the organization. She was sworn in, taking her vows as a proper member of the knights. Nothing dangerous, at first, she was but a child, however she already a strong basis in Silat, passed down to her by her mother and her mothers mentor, Azhar. Owing to her small stature, she practiced almost exclusively with the staff and only continued to push her martial prowess higher and forward within the ranks of the knights. The many warriors among the order were happy to oblige to her and Azhar continued to give her pointers via the matrix. When she was she about ten, she met her rival.

A bright pink oni with a pair of cyberarms, looking down her nose at her. A teenager, old enough to go on lighter missions even. Delima hated her from the moment she saw her, instantly swinging her wooden bo staff at the oni's head upon their first meeting. She lost the 'fight' handily. Earning little more than a scoff from the oni. She would later learn the oni went by Zan Zan and that she had tricked out cyberware and was awakened. Those last two things particularly bugged her and Delima quickly decided both things were a crutch. Frantically, she spent the next several years improving herself and her martial arts, with Azhar guiding her every step of the way. When she was 13, she started going on smaller missions and properly joining sparring. The fact that she would be officially sparring with Zan Zan and even going on assignments with her further spurred the rather one sided rivalry. The two of them fought many, many times but Delima almost never won. Azhar started to call her Sang Monyet whenever she would fall down, whenever she didn't want to get up and train and the nickname pushed her to push herself even further. She acquired augmentations, spending time in the gene-vat to heighten her reaction times and under the knife to augment her adrenal glands and fit her out with tendon strengtheners. The doctor remarked that her body seemed to have a natural attunement to cyberware and offered to fit her out with something closer to what her rival had. Sang refused, not wanting to be anything like Zan Zan. She had a feeling that the perfect augmentation would come to her when the time was right.

When she was 17, Delima deicided she wouldn't learn anything more aboard New Rhodes. She had hit a plateau. Frustrated, she decided to visit her mentor, the one person who had all the answers when she needed them in the past. In the dead of night, she left a message renouncing her vows, packed her scant few possessions and savings and went to leave in a rowboat.

Unfortunately, she wasn't the best with boats, even mostly automated ones. While she was fiddling with the ropes, trying to get the boat untied, someone had noticed the lamp she was using to see, someone who trained long into the night. Investigating, this mysterious person stumbled upon the note renouncing her vows, as well. Cold fury overtook her, quickly sharpened into purpose for action.

Zan Zan and Sang Monyet met once more on the bow of New Rhodes, in the pouring rain. After a few words, Zan Zan drew steel and Sang Monyet answered with her bo staff in turn. Sang was faster than the oni but could only barely avoid her strikes. When she made attacks of her own, Zan Zan was able to deflect them onto her armored limbs, of which she now had four. Sang was tiring faster and decided to gamble the fight on a single, sharp blow to the head. She kicked off the wall, spun and swung the tip of the bo staff at Zan Zan's skull with the centrifugal force of a whirlwind. Zan Zan, in turn, struck from a high stance. Wood and flesh met steel and there was no contest. Sang was far, far too slow. The bo staff shattered and she went stumbling backwards, landing on her ass with a clean cut across her face. Furious and defeated, she scrambled away, onto the lifeboat and out into the storm. Her last sight of Zan Zan was of her on the bow of the ship, eyes reflecting lightning and sword wet with Sang's blood.

Unfortunately, the defeated hero would find only more heartbreak in her future. As she arrived at the mainland and found her way to Azhar's shack. When she arrived, she found the scene of a slaughter. Azhar's broken corpse hung from the door, his body crushed by a series of heavy blows and strange sort of glyph carved into his forehead. Behind him, his homestead burned. Sang Monyet buried her mentor, covered her tearful eyes and ran.

The Knights would not be keen to accept an oathbreaker back into their number but Sang also did not want to face her rival again after a crippling loss. The thought of returning, empty handed with her tail between her legs was sickening. Instead, she decided to forge herself a new path. She joined up with a local front gang for a Seoulpa ring. There was never any intention of climbing to the higher circles, of becoming Blooded, it was merely a temporary stepping stone for her on the road to greater things. She spent a few years working for them, acting as muscle. She replaced her old bo staff with a length of rebar, wrapped in duct tape. As interesting as some of the gigs were and as fun as the scraps with local road gangers turned out to be, she still set her gaze higher.

Emancipation came one dreary afternoon when the front gang decided to make a move on a Dogmen shipment caravan. It was a pretty normal job with a pretty normal plan executed normally, the gangers ran the truck off the road and into a ditch. That was where normality ended.

The truck was filled with smuggled, military grade Azzie guns and ware. The Dogmen weren't gonna give it up without a fight. A veritable fireteam poured out of the back and drowned out the gangers on the road with a hail of gunfire. Luckily for her, Sang wasn't on the road. She was on top of the shipment. As the fireteam moved out, she moved in, smacking the two remaining guards upside the head before they could mobilize a response. The treasure trove was hers for the taking. Guns, Grenades, cyberlimbs ... and something else. All the way at the back of the shipping container, spread against the wall like a work of art, was the most beautiful thing Sang Monyet had ever seen.

It looked like a metahuman nervous system composed of black wires, each reaching out from the spine and brainstem like the hands of the pious reach towards heaven. Along the spine were a series of semi-circular devices, each one replacing a vertebrae. Power enough for an electric car. It was all there to push it beyond simple flesh and bone, to push her beyond. It was fate.

Sang Monyet grabbed the move-by-wire and a handful of other ware and sprinted out of there, the sounds of gunshots and gargled screams of her former companions barely even registered to her. She was approaching perfection, she held in her grasp the means to climb the stairway to the heavenly realm and, more importantly, to kick Zan Zan's butt.

As soon as she was able to, she fenced everything except the move-by-wire system and used the funds to pay for a good 'no-questions-asked' cyberdoc to implant it into her. Her life changed that day. She had become Complete.

From then on out, the pieces just started to fall into place. She dusted off Angela's number and gave the woman a call. It took some convincing and more than a little arguing but eventually, the woman decided she would be charitable and that she would help the wayward knight find work as a shadowrunner in the Emerald City. What more needed to be said?

Our time together is at a close. Do not cry. The story of Sang Monyet is only beginning. Soon, they will sing her name from the tops of ivory tower. Soon, her tale will be written upon the very stars!

Positive
Positive
Untouchable (Biocomp: Cyberware, Restricted Gear: Rating 3 Move-By-Wire System): Sang Monyet is built different. Part of that is a natural tolerance for cyberware and the other was her ability to steal a prototype move-by-wire system and get away with it. Mostly get away with it, the Dogmen are looking for her after all!
The Wandering Hero (School of Hard Knocks, Bilingual): She's been around the block before and she knows a thing or two. Fluent in English and Malay thanks to her upbringing (mostly from Azhar lets be honest), her knowledge has only grown the more well travelled she has gotten.

Negative
Negative
One With The Wires (Poor Self Control 2: Cannot Sit Still, Lack of Focus): Move-By-Wire kicks the body into a constant state of near seizure. When in motion, Sang Monyet is movement incarnate, like a cloud flowing cross the valley, she is perfection. When sitting still, she's a ored, uncomfortable, twitchy gremlin.
Memorable Mischief Maker (Distinctive Style, Thrill Seeker): The hero always has to push themselves further, fight stronger foes, climb farther, soar higher! Her shouting her own name at any opportunity doesn't help her memorability problem.
Not Without Enemies (Wanted: Dogmen, 30k): They're really pissed about the stolen MBW.

Summary

Sang Monyet or more commonly just 'Sang', styles herself as a wandering hero, travelling through the Seattle sprawl and greater world and having adventures every step of the way. Unfortunately, during her wanderings she left a great deal behind her. Her place in the Knight's Hospitaller and her mentor, to name a few. Oh well! The past can wait, the future is clear and bright!

Rasa Sayang, hey!

Goals

Have adventures!

Fight strong warriors!

One up Zan Zan wherever possible

Track down her mother and track down her mentor's killer

Inspirations

Sang Monyet ("Revered Monkey" in Malaysian) is inspired by a lot of things, some of them listed below:

 • Malaysian Folklore and martial arts, as well as my own love for martial arts and martial arts media
 • The character Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, Sang is archetypically similar (a free roaming 'hero' who's headstrong and quick to get into trouble) and stylistically similar (has a big stick).
 • The TTRPG Gubat Banwa! Go play it!

Background

Gather round! Gather round! Today, we tell the story of Sang Monyet! However, even the most incredible of stories often have humble beginnings and this one is no exception. Overshadowed all her life, first by her mother ... then by her rival. Her deeds were not many until much, much later and yet the beginning of her story still must be told. Let us return ... to before the beginning.

Narrative Significant Qualities

1 You find a Malay folk tale called 'Sang Kancil and Sang Monyet' wherein a smart mouse-deer outwits a lazy monkey. Sang Monyet means 'Revered Monkey' in Malay.
3 A video from a livestreamed 'anything goes' fighting tournament from several years ago is 'Sang Monyet', a plucky teenager with a wooden bo staff. She is elimanted in the semi-finals.
6 A slurry of footage from dash cams, personal commlinks and cybereyes depicting a short woman with a stick of rebar as a weapon, shouting her name to the heavens. They are exclusively depicting her after a fight of some description. Some traffic around the name on the less than reputable forums, seems the Dogmen are looking for someone matching the description.

5 "Look, consider my memory jogged, okay? Yeah, there's a sam runnin' around with that name. Got wires, not the regular kind though, the freak kind. Don't think she's magic or nothin', just stupid and fast. Has a stick, hits people with it, what's there to tell?"

1 Sang Monyet's aura is puffy, cloudlike. It's surprisingly soft, even fluffy, for a person that maims people for a living. She seems to be having some sort of intense neurological breakdown, like every single neuron is firing at the same time, even when she isn't really moving, like an extreme generalized seizure. It looks like light, dancing through and reflecting across the clouds. Beyond that, she's physically fit and most likely in a good mood! She is mundane.
2 It's cyberware. That's the light reflecting across the clouds, bouncing back and forth, gathering potency, gathering speed.
3 Her essence is most likely lower than your own, although it doesn't diminish the brightness of her aura. The clouds are beautiful, twisting and flowing and moving and you want to run and disappear into the sky.
4 The entirety of her body has been sculpted, made hers. That flowing, momentum gathers speed around her muscles, flowing over them, outlining them. You think of falling and spinning but you aren't afraid.
5 It runs deep. Down to her very genes. She was made to move and you could never contest that, could never capture those clouds. She will soar.

Aspect Information Related Run(s)
A Fighter of Fighters! Sang Monyet is a martial artist, proficient in Silat and deadly with a quarterstaff. She is always looking to expand her martial repertoire and battle strong warriors to test herself.
Parental Concerns Her mom was a revered militant who practically founded the Malaysian Communist Party. Still is, potentially. The last Sang heard, she had fragged off to go fight in the mid 2070s and that was the last she heard of her. Nevertheless, she's much too strong to have died in a ditch or to some government soldiers guns. She's still out there ... and Sang would like to find her ... and beat her ass.
Revenge for the Fallen Blossoms Azhar was Sang's mentor and father figure for the majority of her life, raising her far more than her mother ever did. He's dead now, beaten to death and left as some sort of warning, strange sigils carved into his forehead. Maybe its a fascist looking for revenge ... maybe its the bugs. Whoever did it, watch out. Sang's out for revenge.
Wanted Woman The Dogmen are a smuggling outfit from the SSC known for dealing in organs, used ware and flesh. Anything they can get their hands on. Sang Monyet stole her trademark move-by-wire system from a high profile shipment of theirs, all the way up to the Azzies. They want it back.
Mess Me Up, Boss I welcome long term narrative consequences on my dorks, so long as they feel appropriately earned. Hit me with 'em!
