Overview

As a young boy, Anatoly was a test subject in a Russian nanocybernetics research program, dedicated to enhancing cognitive limits. Chess was amongst the many evaluation tools used to score the children, and it had a lasting impact. After the program was shut down and the subjects kicked onto the streets of Moscow, it became his constant companion and sometimes-obsession.

After many years of drifting from place to place, he wound up halfway across the world in Seattle, where he spent several years as a private tutor for the children of wealthy absentee parents. After his drinking and general lack of empathy drove most of his business away, he resigned himself to hustling in parks and coffee shops near the University.

Personality

Anatoly is a bit of a wildcard. While he has a randomized moral compass from years of mistreatment in a Russian lab-prison, he is surprisingly adept at manipulating people, and he has put this skill to use in separating overconfident intellectuals from their nuyen. In addition, Anatoly has a knack for keeping his ears open, which has served him well with the headquarters of Wuxing so close nearby.

Yevgenyevich lives for chess, and interactions with him always take place physically, in front of his board. While he treats everyone as a potential mark, he has a special fondness for binding his negotiations to the outcome of a blitz game.

Pending approval

When asking Anatoly for information or a favor, he'll insist you talk over a game of chess. If you wish, you can accept his offer to wager on the outcome of the game.

Roll a contested chess knowledge test. Anatoly rolls his gaming (chess) knowledge at 15 dice with a limit of 9. You may roll this, or you may use a related skill at your GM's discretion. If you have nothing relevant, you can default on intuition or logic, but let's face it---you're going to lose, omae.

  • If you win: you will temporarily gain 1 loyalty with Anatoly for this negotiation only.
  • If you lose: you will temporarily lose 1 loyalty with Anatoly for this negotiation only. If this drops you to zero loyalty, Anatoly smiles smugly at you, and you're out of luck this time, chummer. You get nothing out of him.

Based on your increase or decrease in loyalty, Anatoly will be more or less liberal with information or help accordingly. Next time, however, it's back to square one.
