Character Information
Summary
Evie Etienne is a cybered-up street sam who once called herself an Otaku, and once went by the name of Seven7. A lot has changed since then. Now, she's re-acquired a connection to the Resonance, but even that's been tainted by the actions of a former friend. She's decaying...
Goals
- Understand what's happening to her, and perhaps even stop it.
- Find who she used to be, and recover some of that individual.
Background
Evie was born August 1st, 2084, in the UCAS, to a poor pair of wageslaves scraping by in a DeeCee neighborhood. Life would probably have been fine if she didn't goblinize in her early teens, especially given a family that was a long way from accepting. Her parents were the best about it, but even they were distant, unsure. This made their child withdraw, and she retreated into the safety of the Matrix, wherein she would slowly discover strange new ways she could interact with the digital world. Slowly, she came to the understanding that she was an Otaku, a fact which only drove her further away from her parents. If they couldn't understand her goblinization, they certainly wouldn't understand this, either.
After a few years, Evie decided to act and escape the cold life she'd been dealt. Though she was provided for, freedom would be well worth the cost. Hacking work under the table eventually led to her accruing a sizeable amount of cash behind the back of her relatives. When everything was in place, she paid some good (read: nuyen-motivated) friends she'd made to burn away her SIN, and vanished in the dead of night, across the country on a flight to the west coast.
Seattle was the perfect place for this Otaku to come into her own, and for four years she worked to carve a niche for herself in the local Matrix scene using her uncommon talents, working under the name Seven7s (or 777777). Everything was going well until the Crash 2.0 came along, completely changing the nature of the Matrix and ripping her powers away from her to boot.
With her expertise and advantages ripped out from under her, Evie began to spiral. She developed an intense jealousy, a near-hatred of her previous self, so privileged with the ability to make a good living and remain happy. A move-by-wire system, and some cyberarms to boot, would be excellent revenge against her own past naivete.
Now Evie continued to make herself a living - but in a very different way than she once did. Initially, she held compunctions around killing, but years upon years of further jobs and deeply-held bitterness drew her away from those ideals slowly. The common betakami cocktail she began taking for performance hardly helped, either, though she at least managed to avoid developing a dependency.
Then, when she was thirty-eight, fate again visited its karmic retribution. Nearly twenty years after Evie had last felt the Resonance, its comforting harmony began to return, faint though it was through her heavily augmented body. She worked quickly to understand the differences between what she had been and what she was now - though she'd never share the talents of that young otaku from so long ago, at the very least, perhaps she could remember what properly mattered to her.
Some months later, Evie received a call from an old friend, a good friend, one that had helped show her the ropes back in her teenage years. A woman who went simply by Br1ck. Of course Evie agreed to meet - why wouldn't she want to rekindle such a long-lost connection? A time was scheduled, a place determined. Evie arrived with true excitement in her heart, a bursting so novel after more than a decade, but when her friend arrived it became clear something was horribly wrong. Too late did Evie understand the ways that Br1ck's whispers wormed their way into her thoughts, how the hands that began to grasp her cheeks felt like their fingerprints ought to unwind and twist. After hours and hours of talking, nothing made sense.
And then Br1ck was gone.
Now Evie feels awake again, feels real again, with her most previous bond returned. At the same time, the world seems to be dissolving into nonsense around her in a literaly way - and so a large part of that reality is terror. She's started calling herself Ephemera - she doesn't know how much longer she'll be in this game, or if she really belongs here at all.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
Otaku to Technomancer - Ephemera was born back in 2044, when the Matrix was still wired. Her powers as an Otaku helped her achieve a tantalizing, shining moment of happiness and freedom before the Crash 2.0 wrecked it all.
Technomancer - Ephemera re-emerged just two years ago, and to some extent is still becoming accustomed to the differences between her new abilities and the old ones.
Human Lifespan - Having goblinized in her teens, Ephemera doesn't have to worry about dying two to seven years from now... of old age, that is.
Negative
Decaying Dissonance - Ephemera was lured and confronted by a friend from long, long ago, who goes by the name of Br1ck. This friend has given herself to the Dissonance, and wishes for Ephemera to join her... now chaos creeps across the ork's mind, carving a bewildering trail through formerly coherent thought.

Matrix Search Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Ephemera. Something not intended to stay around for very long. |
3 | Mixed results. The name Ephemera starts popping up around fifteen years ago, regarding a reasonably competent street samurai, an ork. |
6 | Ephemera has apparently lived in Seattle for much longer than she's been using that name - long before this, she went by Seven7, and appeared to focus on decking work, before suddenly getting heavily augmented and changing specialties. What changed isn't clear, but the change dates back to around crash 2.0. |
Shadow Community Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | "Ephemera? Yeah, she's a street samurai. Really hardcore on the cyberware, that one - full on move-by-wire." |
3 | "I'm a little worried about her lately. She seems distracted all the time, got something or another on her mind." |
5 | "Word is this lady's been around here for a while. She used to get called for matrix work, but after the crash, not so much. You want to know more, take a search on the name Seven7." |
Assensing Table
Threshold | Result |
---|---|
1 | Healthy. Usually distracted or detached. Not Awakened. |
2 | Two replaced arms. |
3 | Alphaware move-by-wire. Essence almost certainly lower. |
4 | No bioware or betaware. Essence 1.22. |
5 | Is a technomancer. |
SINs
R4 Fake SIN (Tillie Gray, UCAS)
- Fake Firearms License - Fake Driver's License - Fake Bodyguard License
Appearance
Ephemera has light green skin and blonde hair, with a pair of red cyberarms. She's taller than average for an orc, though not by much, and has amber eyes. She's visibly fit, though she often has trembling in her arms and legs due to her move-by-wire system.
Clothing
On the job, she's either in her Berwick Suit or an armor jacket. Otherwise, she prefers crop tops and sweaters with either jeans or leggings. Casual wear.
Matrix Persona
Ephemera's matrix persona is like a wisp of wind, a vaguely humanoid warping of light that stirs up digital dust wherever it goes. The edges are a little... poorly defined? Perhaps even glitchy.
