Character Information
Summary
Cully is a street kid from Puyallup who didn't get bogged down in gang life. He learned he was capable of magic, and with the help and guidance of something he calls 'Fire Buddy' (Fire-bringer Mentor Spirit), he's been honing his craft. A bit of Healing and some other tricks, as well as being quick with a gun, soon saw him on the path of a Shadowrunner. But he never forgets where he comes from, and has sworn he won't use his powers to pile on misery to his neighbors, but instead look out for them, as a good neighborhood kid should. Those who can, do.
Goals
- Build something of a sanctuary for the down and out of Puyallup - whether it's safe coffin sleepers, a bit of healing what's ailing your, or just a hot meal.
- Gleefully learn more about magic
- See what the world has to offer and maybe even travel (but never forget home)
Background
What did he know? He was just some dumb, punk kid. Drek-for-Brains, as everyone in the ‘hood called him, but then again, they said that about everyone. Heh. May even be right about it. But there he was, just some skinny little Barrens rat; faster than most, still had his teeth, and quick with his hands. And then came the Big Blue Bolt from Heaven, cast by God, Allah, Zeus, Bacchus, Elvis, or Colonel Fraggin’ Sanders maybe, came down and slammed into him and changed his life. At least, that’s how he liked to envision it. Didn’t matter no how - what mattered is what it brought. And that was Magic, chummer!
Little by little, he started to harness it. He was quicker - could dance through a rain storm without gettin’ burned by the acid. Well, much. Get in a scrap and suddenly he could put his oppo down before they ever even landed a blow. And that nasty winter a year back got a lot easier when he learned how to keep his body heat up. Funny, that last one; he got it while staring enviously at a trid of a roaring fireplace in a store window during the holidays - fraggers! Don’t they know what a torment that is to those who can’t warm themselves??
Later, he was trying to help a street chum out after they got chewed up by the wrong gang - don’t give insults to gangers you don't know, drekhead! But he was checking her out, trying to figure how to stop the bleeding (a new trick he learned that he could see people’s auras, which was freaky). He thought about how she’d feel better if she was warmed up - her aura still burned with life. She later said he muttered a few words and damn if those knife slashes didn’t close up.
Little by little, he picked up that he could also cast spells just like Fantasmo on the trid! Well, not just like - Fantasmo was a fraggin’ idiot. But he dressed real cool and had some dope lines and always got the girl or guy (and sometimes both). And every time, it seemed he figured it out after seeing some flames. That trashcan bonfire the bums gathered ‘round, that burning shack that one night in the hood…they all seemed to help him focus and, y’know, just figure stuff out.
In the meantime he was starting to make a bit of a name for himself. Picking up odd jobs - sometimes helping in a little squabble (and patching folks up after), bust up some rackets - not the big wheels, but every neighborhood gets new toughs who think they got enough weight to throw around and hassle folks who don’t until it takes a guy with a couple of chummers and some nifty tricks to set ‘em straight. He even started to have to shave.
Cully even made a little cheddar outta all this - enough to dump his squat and get a real apartment. Sure, still the same neighborhood - he kinda liked it here, after all. And sure, it wasn’t much, but for a street kid like him, it felt like a palace. A small one, at least.
People began to notice. A big shot downtown - no, not the ones who drive the limos and got a hot tag on each arm, but rather a fellah who knew a fellah who knew a fellah and…well, you know how it works. Someone who knows. Who has friends. And business acquaintances. And a knack for matching friends with jobs. And always on the lookout for talent. Cully guessed he’d been noticed a bit. And that fixer - what they called him - hooked him with a decker - y’know, the dudes with computers in their heads? Got Cully set up with a fake ID and some licenses for, well, just in case. The jobs came a bit more frequent, with better cred. And more danger, but what’s life without a bit of it?? One day, someone called him a “runner” and that made Cully laugh. Imagine that! Him, a shadowrunner.
Word kept getting out. Folks in the ‘hood kept coming to him for help with this, and help with that. It was a hassle, really, but Cully did it. Usually didn’t charge, either. Or just what they could afford. You gotta look out for the folks on your block, after all. They look out for you! Word passes quick when someone sees a Knight Errant car hanging around. Or some chip-pusher doesn’t know when to ease off. Or if someone was hanging around asking uncomfortable questions. Cully didn’t really mind.
But it wasn’t too long before he caught the attention of someone - or something - else.
One night, Cully was watching some of the ‘hood kids roasting a devil rat over a trashcan fire. It made him smile - not a bad catch for those little squirts. He musta dozed off a bit, because things got a bit weird, and it looked like the fire grew and grew. That was strange, he thought. But not as weird as what happened next…when it spoke to him.
“About damn time you started listening!” Cully just nodded, eyes sleepy and a stupid grin on his face. Huh. Old Essie’s soy-patties were usually real good; rarely gave you the squirts.
“WAKE UP!”
That got Cully’s attention. He squinted a bit - this was strange! But hey, he knew magic and that was pretty strange, too. Eh. You get used to it.
The fire started telling him stuff. Called itself Promo-somethingsomething, but Cully just called him ‘Fire Buddy’. Told Cully it liked his style - but that he could do more. Should do more. “There are those that can’t, those that can, and those that do”, Fire Buddy told him. “It’s those last ones that get true respect.”
And that caught Cully’s attention. On the street, script or cred is hard to come by. Or, maybe, easy to come by and hard to hold onto. Precious stuff, either way. Always good, and always spends…but pretty rare; or at least uncommon in large amounts. But respect? That’s got its own currency. And Cully was sharp enough to know the difference between “being respected” and “being feared”. One was earned; the other was suffered.
In the ‘hood, you either fight to get out or fight to hang together. Gangs come and go, except in Puyallup (unless they’re fraggin’ elves), but the ‘hood stays the same.
Things made a lot more sense after realizing that. Cully couldn’t just look at the street like it was a buncha shadows shuffling around like that painting by the guy who cut his ear off (Hardcore!).
Some folks can’t, some folks can, and some folks do. Cully knew which one he wanted to be.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
Mentor Spirit: Fire-Bringer - Fire Buddy urges him to help those who truly need it. Cully doesn't think he should wait until they ask, but go looking for 'em. Still, be nice to earn a little cash along the way.
Negative
Day Job - Well, that's what he calls the time and place he spends to look folks over. Whether looking at their aura, casting some relevant spells for diagnosis, or referencing the little bit of medical practice he's been reading up on. Help a chummer out.
Code of Honor - Cully is proactive in seeking out those who need help. He doesn't have to look far - Puyallup is full of the weary and miserable. He's determined to do something about that, if only in his tiny corner of the world. And it doesn't matter who they are, as long as they're not obviously using the help to then hurt others.

Cully is casual without being outrageous. Sports a lined coat when there could be trouble (in Puyallup, that's frequent).
