"The remaining Virgin Islands National Guard were expelled from the naval base, at my orders, on suspicion of treason. Only a small detachment of my UCAS Army Regulars and marines from the Biden held out in the naval base, whose land side had been surrounded by the protesting locals.

I ordered Sergeant Major Hemmingway to evacuate along with the rest of the NCOS, but she refused.

What can I say about her? Ambitious. Rigid. Highly intelligent. She seemed to care very deeply for her compatriots. No one who knew that young woman then could say otherwise. What she lacked, however, was universal empathy. People were not all equal or deserving, not in the least. Not to the Sergeant Major.

I gave her orders to destroy what remained of our operational equipment and cold-storage servers and evacuate with the remaining troops. We couldn't hold the walls if the people stormed them, not without mass casualties. But I was at the Biden, preparing to scuttle her. I was not overseeing her efforts. I should have anticipated her vindictiveness, her inability to accept defeat.

I should have known.

If you elect that woman, and she feels that your Metroplex is slipping from her grasp, feels the walls closing in...I can only pray she does not win."
