Overview
Alexander Tyrell Gates (born in 2044) is the nephew of Brian Gates III, President and CEO of the Microdeck Corporation in the Seattle Metroplex. Because of his family’s unique intersection of Matrix obsession and obscene generational wealth, Tyrell Gates has had every possible digital and social advantage in his life.
From birth trodes were the laurel wreath placed upon his crown. Before he could walk, the best cybertechnologists in the world implanted the world’s first juvenile expandable datajack in him. He learned to code in the old hardwired Matrix before he ever spoke his first words aloud, learned to sleaze and attack and manipulate the Matrix when the Matrix and Tyrell Gates were both still in their infancy.
To say that Tyrell Gates is a creature of the Matrix is an understatement. While the Gates Family had high hopes that Tyrell would one day become the Matrix savant and guru they felt they needed to guide the family corporation through the later half of the 21st Century, they were deeply disappointed by the young man he turned out to be. Withdrawn from the corporeal world, socially inept and prone to raging tantrums when disconnected from the Matrix, Tyrell became the family’s black sheep; a family experiment failed. A write-off.
But Tyrell eventually became the person they hoped he’d be only in his own time and in his own way. Tyrell Gates became an Otaku as a young man. Delving deeper and deeper into the Matrix, Tyrell Gates privately prophesied the coming of digital cataclysm and the Emergence from the Deep Resonance. Forewarned and already having survived the Crash of ‘29, Microdeck took its servers offline and survived the Matrix Crash 2.0 nearly unscathed. The Microdeck Corporation continues to soldier on against all odds but is deeply restrained by Tyrell Gate’s unrelenting moral code, unable to expand on or take cruel advantage of others' misfortune in the wake of the Matrix Crash 2.0.
Into 2084, Tyrell continues to successfully rein in Microdeck's predatory corporate impulses and immoral behavior leaving it ill-equipped to do anything but tread water and fight off hostile takeovers from larger megacorporations.
Some members of the Gates Family, the shadows whisper, are none too pleased with the moralizing influence Tyrell has over his uncle...
Aspects Description
Aspect | Description |
---|---|
Hard To Reach | Between his work at Microdeck and his constant do-goodery, Tyrell Gates is a busy, busy man. Always make an Availability Test for Alexander Tyrell Gates with his Connection +3 than normal. |
A Man of Principle | Tyrell Gates is selective about who he works with. Notoriety has a double penalty when dealing with him: subtract twice the runner's Notoriety from any check he is asked to do. |
Corporeal Anxieties | Tyrell Gates wore trodes before the first time he was laid to rest in a crib. The Matrix is reality to him; the real world, a bad dream. If it weren’t for the necessities of keeping his biological processes functional and his beloved garden, he’d never jackout at all. Because of his personal anxieties he is only willing to meet in meat-space with contacts at Loyalty 5+. Technomancers are an exception and can meet physically with a Loyalty at 4+. |
Caped Crusader’s Creed | Tyrell Gates will not knowingly give any assistance that will lead to the killing of a sentient being. Violence is acceptable if it is strictly subdual in nature. Tyrell Gates is not opposed to vigilantism, quite the opposite, but he will NEVER kill. If he finds out that he was intentionally manipulated into helping kill someone, he will immediately and irrevocably be burned as a contact. |
Look For The Helpers | Tyrell Gates is a busy man. There are a thousand injustices occurring every nanosecond around the world. Every moment he gives you his attention someone in need of aid is suffering. He knows he cannot save the world from itself but by Zero-One, he’s going to help as many as he can. Characters that solicit his aid must make a successful Social Test at a Threshold of 3 (Con or Negotiation) to convince Tyrell Gates that their work is worthy of his attention. At the GM’s Discretion the Threshold may be raised if the runners are engaging in some truly black-hearted work, or lowered if they are hooding. |
Helping Hands | Tyrell Gates has no time for blackguards. He’ll help anyone do a good deed, but if you want to become closer to the man you’ll need to prove your character. Loyalty can only be raised 1 at a time, and each raising requires the character to first complete a run on his behalf. |
Connection Established, Never Lost | As a child Tyrell Gates was a proto-otaku. As a young man he became an Otaku. As an adult, he survived the Fading to Emerge as a Technomancer. To say that Tyrell Gates has a strong connection and familiarity with the Matrix is the understatement of the century. (+2 dice to all tests involving the Matrix in any capacity) |
Technoshaman of the World Tree | Tyrell Gates is in rarefied company. There are few individuals in the world more powerful or wise in the ways of the Matrix. From the first time the World Tree whispered through the Matrix to an infant Tyrell, Tyrell has considered it his life-giver and the Source of All. He has trained for over 40 years in the Matrix and is a sworn and stalwart protector of 01. On the Matrix his Resonance positively radiates and he has submerged many, many times. (RES 12, SG 10: Aegis, FFF, Neural Synergy x3, Resonance Resistance, Skinlink, Will of the Resonance x3; LOG 6 (9), WILL 6 (10), INT 6, CHA 4) (+2 dice to all tests involving the use of technomancer abilities) |
Wuxing-Forbes Ranked 707 | Microdeck is a stable if small Single A corporation, and the Gates Family fortune has appreciated nicely over time. Tyrell Gates’s personal fortune doesn’t seem like much compared to the trillionaires at the top of the Wuxing-Forbes Richest Rankings, but he still has single digit billions of nuyen of liquid assets at his disposal. (+2 dice to all tests involving gear acquisition of all kinds) |
Microdeck Reverse-Engineering | Microdeck made its name pre-Crash of ‘29 in software, but by 2084 almost 90% of its revenue is in hardware manufacturing. Some call Microdeck the King of Thieves. They are, without a doubt, the King of Knockoff Technology. Many in the shadows openly wonder how it is possible for the Single A corporation to routinely beat AAA tech giants to market with no-frills and no-fanfare knockoffs of soon-to-be-released technology. Simply put: Tyrell Gates believes that all information should flow freely. (+2 dice to all tests involving gear acquisition if the gear is a Microdeck knock-off: same stats, different branding.) |
First Toy A Cyberdeck | Tyrell Gates hasn’t needed a cyberdeck for decades, but there is still something very nostalgic about them. He follows along with the latest technological developments (along with Microdecks’ busy reverse-engineers) and can tell you a thing or two about them. He even has himself a Microdeck-forged Kitbashed Sleeper, though he only takes it for a ride once in awhile. (+2 dice to all tests involving cyberdecks, including gear acquisition) |
Nuyen Is No Object | Tyrell Gates has his billions, and Microdeck has even more. Tracking down expensive equipment is child’s play, so you better have a good reason to ask him for help. Rest assured, he can get his hands on it. (+2 dice on all gear acquisition tests for gear over Availability 15) |
Put Your Nuyen Where Your Mouth Is | You want something exceptionally difficult to find? Tyrell can acquire it for you…if you can prove your character is worthy. (+2 dice on all gear acquisition tests if the character donates an additional 5,000 nuyen to a charitable cause for every 50,000 nuyen of the gear’s base price) |
Siblings of the Matrix | Tyrell Gates has a soft spot for deckers and technomancers. Especially those that try to use their powers for good. If he vibes with you he’ll work harder for you. (+2 dice to all tests in the character requesting aid is a decker or a technomancer) |
Child’s Play | Tyrell can hack in his sleep. In fact, he probably would, so thank goodness for the ability to perform a timed reset of his persona before bed. If you want something broken into, he’s got you covered. (+2 dice to all tests involving hacking) |
Consult The Tree | Tyrell Gates has unorthodox methods of finding information but 01 be praised, can he ever find information. And quickly! (+2 dice to all tests involving Matrix Searches, which he performs in one quarter the normal time.) |
ALTruistic To The End | Tyrell Gates is trying to save the world, one person at a time. His Matrix travels and personal crusades have put him into contact with strange fellows out there and while Tyrell himself may be a little off-putting, those he has helped are quick to come to his aid when called. (+2 dice to all tests involving networking and knowledge checks) |
Help The Helpers | For fellow crusaders Tyrell Gates will move mountains. (As per the Negative Aspect “Look For The Helpers”, if a character has convinced Tyrell Gates their request is for hooding, all tests receive +2 dice) |
