Summary

Runners are hired by an overworked sister to murder a paranoid drug kingpin for her shithead brother.

Background

After hearing that the Halloweeners secured a new drug lab following the events of Johnfidence, Jack da Rabbit comes up with a scheme to help the gang secure more marketshare in the Downtown drug trade by eliminating some of the competition. He pressures his sister Charlotte Valdez into finding some runners for him, to her dismay.

The Meet

Near midnight, the runners are told to meet their Johnson, Charlotte Valdez, at a noodle stand in Ravenna. She arrives late, exhausted from her actual job, and doesn't seem like she wants to be there. After some quick questions, the team accepts the job and gives half their pay upfront. The job is simple: find the paranoid First Nations drug dealer Curtis Sparrow and kill him. Problem is, Charlotte only has a vague description of the guy.

The team gets instructions to send proof to her client's commcode when the job is done, but makes it clear that she doesn't want to see it herself.

The Plan

RC-45 does some Matrix searching and finds an a photo of their target, a rogue host belonging to one of his distributors, and the location of a storage unit he rents. Lumina botches a social roll to arrange a meet with the distributor, so RC-45 has Ru Xiao look into their target. Xiao finds out that Sparrow frequents Gravity Bar North and has a reservation there tonight under a fake name.

The Run

RC-45 hangs out in an owl cafe nearby while Lumina climbs onto the roof with a microskimmer drone. He hacks into the restaurants host, gets into their reservation list to find out where Sparrow will be sitting, hacks into the cameras, and uses data on previous reservations to find an image of what Sparrow's disguise might be.

The runners decide to hide the skimmer drone and a stealth tag under Sparrow's car while he's having dinner. They also decide to hide Lumina in his truck, but his electromagnetically shielded vehicle cuts her off from the Matrix as soon the truck closes.

After dinner, Sparrow changes his mask in the car, gets out half a mile from his apartment and walks the rest, and has the car drive itself to a parking garage a mile away. RC-45 has to go free Lumina from the trunk, but has his drone follow the target home.

Lumina climbs the building and listens to Sparrow mutter to himself about incompetent distributors then head to his bedroom. RC heads through the building and hacks the door's maglock, but has to stop when he notices a tripwire rigged to a flashbang attached to the door. Lumina snips it, sneaking past a ceiling mounted gun turret, and the two take positions by Sparrow's bedroom door to jump him.

Sparrow passes his surprise test and shoots Lumina through the wall, but her superior tankiness means she's unaffected. After a short conflict, Lumina beheads Sparrow and sends a recording to the commcode the Johnson gave along with an offer to bring the head.

The team rappel away from the crime scene before the cops can arrive and receive instructions to meet at a storage unit Downtown for the handoff. They're surprised to meet a Halloweener in a rabbit mask there, but don't question it too much since Jack da Rabbit hands over the rest of their money in exchange for Sparrow's head.

Aftermath

While not the top of the ladder, Sparrow was a mid-tier drug pusher (receiving "wholesale" shipments from smugglers and drug cooks and selling those to street dealers), and his death leaves room for other gangs to muscle in on the First Nation's business. The Halloweeners swoop in and take over most of Sparrow's market, but other gangs benefit as well.

Jack is neither humble nor subtle. The First Nations hear about him bragging and are pissed at the Halloweeners for killing Sparrow.

Lumina: "Straight forward, though surprising at the end with who the job was actually for..."

RC-45 She has far more ware then I do and able to handle herself in combat better, but I like always prove to be good on the matrix.
