Summary
The runners travel to Toronto to investigate the brutal assault of Alain "Al" Levant, an activist digging into bid-rigging at the Bureau of Procurement. Their search pulls them deep into the city's tangled underworld of competing Mafia, Triad, corporate and government interests to uncover who was behind the attack.
Background
Maria Violi, an insider in the Violi Mafia family, hires a team of runners to uncover the truth behind the assault of her fiancé, Alain "Al" Levant. Al had been giving lectures on corporate social responsibility in Toronto while publicly raising concerns about bid rigging within the Bureau of Procurement. The list of suspects is as dangerous as it is broad—rival factions like the Commisso Mafia Family and the Golden Pagoda Triad, along with powerful figures at Langton Enterprises and within the Bureau itself.
The Meet
Anansi, Backseat, Samael, and Short Circuit arrive at the Bellevue Hilton for a meeting with Maria Violi. She offers the team 20,000 nuyen each to investigate the brutal beating of her fiancé, Alain Levant. According to Maria, Alain was attacked two days earlier on the University of Toronto campus by two musclebound assailants. She believes the assault was a direct result of his investigation into corruption within the Bureau of Procurement.
Maria names four high-profile individuals she suspects could be behind the attack: Antonio Commisso of the rival Commisso Mafia family, Li Chuan Fa of the Golden Pagoda Triad, Walter Langton, CEO of Langton Enterprises, and Nancy Kowalski, Director of the Ontario Bureau of Procurement.
Anansi negotiates for better terms, and after some back-and-forth, the team secures 21,000 nuyen each, along with a promise of goodwill from the Violi family—and from Maria herself.
The Plan
Armed with a list of suspects, the runners dive into their legwork—digging into the backgrounds of the named individuals, the power structures of their organizations, and the broader political landscape in Toronto. As they fly into the city, Maria arranges for a local contact to assist: Slick Willy, a Violi Family associate with eyes on the street and access to information about recent underworld payouts.
Upon arrival, the team plan to split up to cover ground quickly. Anansi and Short Circuit decide to head to the University of Toronto to investigate the scene of Alain's assault, looking for witnesses, security footage, or any overlooked evidence. Meanwhile, Backseat and Samael meet with Slick Willy to trace any unusual payments or hired muscle that might tie back to the attack.
The plan is to regroup and begin probing the various strongholds, fronts, and meeting places tied to their suspects—working their way through the city’s criminal and corporate circles to uncover who ordered the hit on Alain Levant.
The Run
Day 1
Upon arrival at the airport, Anansi is provided the shirt that Alain was wearing when he was assaulted. She is able to assense the shirt, identifying a witness who was present. Calling upon a spirit, she tracks down the home of the witness and decide to travel there first before going to the scene of the assault. Short Circuit sends out a drone to recon the apartment block, locating the witness's apartment. Anansi is able to perform a mind probe, identifying that one of the attackers used an extendable baton.
Meanwhile, Backseat and Samael arrive at the "No Tell Motel", a motel run by Slick Willy as a front for drug dealing and prostitution. They provide him with payment (covered by Maria) for him to investigate the local muscle to see who received payment for a job recently. They then head towards the university to meet up with Anansi and Short Circuit. Anansi assenses the scene of the assault, receiving visions of DocWagon providing aerial medivac to Alain. With nothing further to investigate at the scene, the team decide to travel to the first infiltration target on their list, the triad owned "Eclipse Lounge & Grill". Backseat goes in alone, managing to find himself at a table with the triad boss, Li Chuan Fa and his associates. Backseat pretends to be a new immigrant to Toronto, hoping to find work with the Triads, eventually getting them to talk about the assault on Alain, finding out that they were unlikely to be responsible. They decide to call it a night, with Anansi, Backseat and Samael staying at a hotel and Short Circuit preferring to sleep in the car for free.
Day 2
The day begins with the team heading towards a breakfast restaurant popular with the employees at the Ontario Bureau of Procurement. They spread out, listening in on any gossip that could provide clues. Backseat listens in on a group of accountants discussing an audit that is occuring. Backseat plants a bug on one of the accountants, later learning that the audit is in relation to procurement bids being altered to make them ineligible or price too high, with evidence pointing to an outside hacker. The team decide to halt their investigation of the Bureau for now and instead head towards Soranno's, a Commisso affiliated restaurant. Upon arrival, Anansi begins talking to a group of Commisso soldato. She asks if they were involved with the assault on Alain and they reveal that they weren't and that they have a positive opinion of him. Having ruled out the Commisso mafia, the team decide to retire for the evening. Slick Willy sends a message, informing the team that he's found potential suspects and to meet him at the motel the next day.
Day 3
In the morning, the team decide to investigate an eatery popular with the employees at Langston Enterprises. They sit at a booth close to a group of managers, and overhear them complaining about the CEO's nephew, Edmund, who has somehow won every bid while being inexperieinced and incompetant. Linking this to Alain's investigation into bid rigging, the team decide to investigate Edmund further. They find his home, break into it and locate a commlink with a message from someone named "Bobby Ray". Finding no evidence that Edmund ordered the attack, the team head towards their meeting with Willy. Willy informs them that he has found 3 local freelance goons for hire who have recently received large sums of money for jobs. He has called them over under the guise of a drug deal. When they arrive, they find that one of the goons, is named Bobby Ray and carries an extendable baton, the weapon used in Alain's assault. The team question Bobby Ray, getting him to admit that Edmund not only hired him to carry out the attack, but also joined in as well. Backseat calls Maria, revealing what they have discovered. Maria thanks them for a job well done.
Aftermath
Maria is satisfied with the runner's work, arranging a separate team to carry out reprisal against Edmund. She also instructs Willy to arrange for Bobby Ray to be beaten.
