Overview
If a runner steps into the building on the corner of East Cherry downtown, takes the elevator to the fourth floor, and walks down the hall to the left, they’ll reach a door that reads “Joseph A. Halberstien, Criminal Defence Attorney.” Joseph is a bespectacled Jewish Elf, looking young as elves do, but with a few lines and wrinkles starting to form. These only add a sort of dignified disposition to his appearance. He is tall and gaunt, always wearing a sharp, well-fitting suit, and designer glasses over a hooked nose. He’s stern, and a very hard worker. In the courtroom, he is an absolute brow-beating, ball-busting menace, with a vicious reputation. Not a judge in the Seattle circuit doesn’t know him, and they all give an internal groan if they have the bad luck of having him in their court. That’s because Joseph is one of the many lawyers responsible for keeping the Seattle’s runner scene alive.
By becoming a master at exploiting loopholes, cleaning up evidence (for a nominal fee, starting at 1,000 nuyen, then going way up from there), and good ‘ol fashion bribery, he’s been able to get red-handed runners out of life sentences for decades. His services don’t come cheap, but when you get caught, you need the best.
