Summary

In which Oberon makes a new acquaintance, and leads her away from getting too close to his secrets.

The Meet

Oberon is drinking in a nameless dive bar with Daisy Mittens and Gigabite in celebration of St. Patrick's Day after Lost Media, Found Footage. When the two giants prepare continue their hurlg binge, the banshee sees his cue to make a graceful exit from the festivities, heading outside to have a smoke and call a cab. In the allyway outside, he encounters a lone woman with a cyberarm being accosted by a pair of men; stepping out to confront them, the nocturna immediately gets into a scrap, first being shot before getting up and knocking one of the thugs out with a single punch. The woman, Ailbe O'Maly, puts the other one on the ground before introducing herself, and the two proceed to head to another bar before a police response to the gunshots shows up.

The Plan

At another nameless dive bar, the new pair of acquaintances commiserate over drinks and note that each are flying a bounty hunter license - naturally the topic of work comes up and Ailbe admits that, in addition to celebrating the holiday, she's out gathering information on a pair of missing persons, though she's a bit stumped with it, saying they were last seen hanging around mahjong parlors in Loveland. Oberon, recognizing the preferred hunting grounds of his fixer Agamemnon, offers to help out in exchange for a fee - reasoning that two sets of eyes are better than one and that he could poke around with some of his own contacts.

Albie is happy for the help, and shares information on her missing persons - the brothers Tomek & Emilo Karamazov - along with a photo of the pair. Oberon has his agent scan the photo and run it through Mona Lisa (not without some difficulty thanks to Gremlins) and, while they wait for it to come back with information on them, surreptitiously gives Agamemnon a call. The banshee tells him that he recognizes the pair - that they were schmoozing some Yakuza at his parlor and had angled a job protecting a Bunraku parlor before being killed by one Gabrielle Duval - a loup-garou who works with him - a few nights previous. He asks Oberon to eliminate Ailbe as a loose end, but Oberon (having taken a bit of a shine to Albie, as well as fearing she has allies who would look into her death and discover his involvement) convinces him to instead put him into contact with the loup-garou so that he can instead throw her off their trail.

The Run

En-route to Loveland, Oberon gets Albie talking about herself while he sends a text to the number for Ms. Duval that he was given by Agamemnon. While she is somewhat terse and irked at being contacted by a total stranger, the banshee manages to convince her that he means her no ill will and is simply trying to make a potential problem go away, and that it's in her best interest to cooperate. Thus convinced, she admits that her adrenaline was a bit out of whack when she and her associates hit the parlor ("full moon, you know how it is"), and that she killed the pair while in a rage because they were in the way before coming to her senses and disposing of the bodies at a nearby drop site, having planned to tip off some ghouls about them once the heat died down and the Yaks weren't out in full force looking for the culprit. Thanking her for the information, Oberon says that he'll make sure it isn't traced back to her.

Pretending to receive a text from a contact in the area, the banshee puts on his very limited charms (augmented via expenditure of essence to boost charisma) and spins a mostly-true tale about runners hitting the establishment where the pair had taken up temporary employment. Admitting that the Seattle scene is fairly violent towards mooks, he says that it's likely that the pair are injured or dead if they've been out of contact this long, and they should probably work off of that assumption. While she isn't happy to hear it, Albie admits that the possibility had occurred to her and that her client (and heretofore unmentioned partner, which vindicates Oberon's decision not to simply kill her) will understand.

With the seed planted, the two take a swing by the Bunraku parlor - which is shot up and closed for business - before being quickly shooed away from the scene by irate Yakuza goons. Satisfied that violence has indeed evidently taken place and that more detailed inspection of the scene is unlikely to be allowed, they switch gears and start looking for places to dump bodies nearby. In a nearby half-frozen pond, they turn up the pair of bodies they're looking for in the mud after about an hour of searching; knowing just where to look, Oberon manages to bluff his way into making the inevitable discovery look like a combination of legwork and educated guesses, convincing Albie he is simply a competent bounty hunter.

Aftermath

Having located their quarry, Albie thanks Oberon for his assistance in getting the unpleasant job done and offers to take him to meet with her partner so that he can receive his share of the reward money. Happy to be getting paid, he agrees, and the pair head to an old factory in Auburn being used by the bounty hunters as a base of operations.

Unfortunately for the banshee, Albie's partner is Rose of Sharon Howlett, who is both Aware and has a grudge against the Infected - thankfully his essence is at baseline level and he's able to stop astrally percieving for short spurts, and he's been practicing masking techniques with his fixer. When push comes to shove (and thanks to a lucky pre-edged roll), the masked aura (combined with a heated cloak to hide his low body temperature) is enough to convince her that he's no threat. Managing to segue Albie's retelling of their meeting away from how he shrugged off a barrage of bullets, Oberon accepts a credstick from Rose and bids her good night; outside, Albie once more thanks him for his aid and passes him her commlink number for if he wants to work together and/or sharpen their skills sometime.

Interesting little impromptu job - I forget sometimes how many interesting people one meets when out at bars. Albie seems nice enough, don't think I like the look of her partner much though, bit intense for my blood. Still, its good to know people in her circles to get a bit of a heads-up when people start looking for someone that matches my description. Plus she might be able to show me a thing or two about fighting hand-to-hand. Pair that with a nice paycheck and a night on the town and I'd call it a pretty good St. Paddy's Day.
