GM Style Guide!

Whether you're okay with players applying to jobs their character has a high chance of declining at the meet?

  • No, if you'd like to have your character show up just to walk out as a role-playing beat, then simply PM me and I'd be more than happy for your character to make a brief cameo. Since I'm not okay with this, you should also feel free to ask me questions about the run to determine whether your character would actually accept the job.

Whether you're okay with players applying to jobs their character will actively attempt to thwart or derail?

  • If the run has you doing something evil, then I'm alright with you trying to find a more moral path. Otherwise, as long as you can find a third-party sponsor amongst your contacts for derailing the run such that the party is still paid, then I'm alright with you taking it in unexpected directions with the consent of the majority of the group. I will not usually have something prepared for those unexpected directions, but I'm open to taking a break for the night and reconvening after I get something written.

Views on realism and seriousness of the setting?

  • I think I take a less serious approach to the setting. I know that a good black trench-coat run can be like a puzzle box for the players to crack, but I also really enjoyed designing the run for Gator. Things that would normally be considered failures in a black trench-coat can become cool set-pieces in a pink mohawk game. That's not to say that there won't be potential pit falls; The threat level requirements list out what sort of legwork should be needed for a successful run. This is going to come down to what I tag each individual game.

Views on consequences and failure?

  • Going lethal will almost always earn you negative rep with the org from which you killed members. In a pink Mohawk run, I'm not going to punish you for getting into a car chase or a big gunfight since that's part of the appeal in that setting. Matrix showdowns are also encouraged, but they're likely to try swinging with biofeedback if it's threat level appropriate. Getting caught sneaking on one of those is much more likely to involve you getting into a running fight on the way to your objective rather than getting a scary HTR team called in. On the flip-side, during a black trenchcoat run, alerting security will almost always start the timer on a HTR team arriving. Matrix security here is paradoxically less likely to try frying your brain, but is more interested in finding your location to drop a HTR team on you.

Runs that notably differ from your normal style as described in your document must be noted as such?

  • Check the run tone to see whether to expect a pink Mohawk or black trench-coat.
