Summary

Dennis Walling is a "weasel of a man", and the local manager of the Redmond Plascrete Plant. Jack Anders made the mistake of trying to fight for worker's rights in the 6th world, and is now seeking outside help to avoid the terrible consequences.

Background

The Plascrete Plant has been in operation for years. It is a very distant Ares subsidiary, and Dennis Walling has climbed its ranks from middle manager to head honcho. The only bad news for Walling, the real corpo suits want nothing to do with this have-not wrangling alcoholic. Walling is on the outs with his wife, Melissa, and working towards filing for divorce. What's more, he has put himself in a precarious position in pursuit of greater things. He has been stealing from the company, defrauding the plant as a whole and stealing wages from his workers, especially those who are known to be SINless and using a fake. Threats of exposing them as illegal workers is used constantly to badger them into submission. Even before anything happened, Walling was essentially the dictator of a major source of local employment. But, recently, Jack Anders made the mistake of standing up for his and his co-worker's rights, and even the word 'union' was thrown around! Walling is taking his time, but make no mistake, he plans to have Anders 'disappeared'. Anders has called in buddy, the fixer Big Donny to put a team together and help Redmond thrive.

The Meet

Big_Donny is not a formal man. He calls the runners in to meet him at a local Redmond diner, Tony's. Immediately, the heavyset ork is extremely casual, buying the team a pancake breakfast and chatting with them casually. He has some kind of eastern accent, belying a possible history in Boston or New York. Donny lays out the job simply. Find some dirt on Walling and put him "on a leash". He says the best bet is finding Walling's personal logs of his fraud, as the coward Walling would be mortified to know he could be outed to his mother corp at the drop of the hat. Critical details to note are Walling's distrust of the matrix. Not a total techno-illiteracy, but a strange paranoia which has led him to carry several commlinks and utilize out of date non-wireless tech frequently.

The Plan

The initial legwork flows fairly easily. An in-depth matrix search done by Or@cle reveal's Walling's tense home life, his history of alcoholism, his favorite local bar, and home address. Arete has heard rumors of some decent magical security (at least a spirit or two) in this area, and wants to swing by in person to check it out. The team goes together in Korban's car, taking a look with their third eyes open. Huntress' keen assensing detects no major magical security, but the presence of at least two low force Water Spirits. The team decides to suit up before taking anything further.

A few hours after gathering their gear, Korban and Arete decide to check in with Walling's wife, Melissa. She is home, and while initially unsure about the situation, more than happy to throw her husband under the bus when given the opportunity. She all but confirms that Dennis' important records are being kept in his office, rather than in their home, and the runners make sure to promise her some good dirt on her husband (to assist in divorce proceedings).

That information being gathered, the next step is kidnapping Walling himself! Or@cle calls in their contact, Sn00p3r, who makes a connection with a local Street Doc who can rent the team out a 'back room' for a few hours. The fee for this service comes to 500 nuyen.

The Run

The team cases the local bar, where Walling is often seen drinking himself to oblivion. Walling arrives after staying late at work, and stays until the early hours of the morning, drinking the place dry. He eventually leaves / is kicked out around 2 AM. Korban stalks him as he passes by an alley, being able to easily knock him unconscious and stow him in the car quickly. By way of distraction, Or@cle hacks into a nearby car and sets the alarm to go off, spooking some and at least pulling the attention of all. The team quickly rides away.

Stashing him with the slightly unsettling elvish Street Doc, Or@cle is able to crack into Walling's various commlinks (he had 5) on his person and steal a bunch of his personal information, including criminal contacts of his, and his personal passcodes for his desk safe and the heavy 'airlock' door in the plant's main office. That information secured, the team heads to the plant itself for the main infiltration.

Sneaking into the large compound and easily bypassing its high monowire fence, the team (except Or@cle) make their way inside. Huntress and Korban are very stealthy, while Arete is relying on an improved invisibility. Or@cle quickly enters the host and manages to take control over the relevant cameras (one batch now and the other later). The entry is going soundly, until the Water Spirits spot the very astrally obvious Arete. Given their low force and strange understanding of reality, this is not an immediate bust, but the spirit wants to report the situation to its summoner. Unable to convince it otherwise, Arete and Huntress blast it away with ease. With a silencer and subsonic ammunition being used, the security team cannot be exactly sure of the runners' location, and the runners are able to make it to the main office building before being caught.

Entering into the office, Huntress spots out the Summoner on duty waking up from sleep, as one of his spirits was destroyed. Korban splits off to deal with him, bursting down the door and knocking the Summoner unconscious before he can do anything. The magical opposition eliminated, the 'airlock' door is the next obstacle. It has been manually locked from inside by the enemy Spider, QU1CK-DR4W (cowboy themed decker). Or@cle is able to reach across the matrix and use Puppeteer to have him reopen the doorway. The Spider struggles to even find his opponent in the matrix, and is taken out in meatspace before getting to do much of anything. With Walling's passcode, opening his desk safe is no challenge. Inside is his data-tablet, a bottle of nice whiskey, and some loose change on a credstick. The runners grab them all and prepare for their escape. Just as they are about to leave, two guards (of the five man team) approach to scope out the building. The on-foot runners hide in a supply closet, and Or@cle locks one of the men inside the 'airlock' to disable him. The other is preoccupied calling in for backup, as they have found the unconscious mage, and the team is able to sneak away rapidly.

They pile back into the car, and HTR doesn't even arrive until they are several blocks away.

Aftermath

The team grabs Dennis Walling from his holding cell and throws him out onto the street. Later in the morning, they give Jack Anders a call. He is greatly relieved and thankful for the runner's excellent performance, and tells them to leave the data tablet with Donny. Fittingly, the team calls Donny and meets up with him outside Tony's diner. He has obviously just woken up and is suitably disheveled, but more than happy to receive the news and the full dossier on Walling's illegal activity. He tosses the team the coordinates of a shipping container full of corpsec gear that's 'fallen off a truck', as promised. He congratulates the runners again, before heading off back to sleep.

Game Quotes

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

Arete

I need to get extended masking to cover sustained spells. I really fragged the pooch on the infiltration. I could've sent a spirit for support that that would've alerted security as well. Thank goodness for competent team mates.

Huntress

"Captain, the run went successful. Though I was worried at first given history with another runner... the one that mentioned explosives before sir. But we still managed to pull through. After proper reconnaissance we infiltrated a secure plascrete production facility for Ares. We were to retrieve files for our Johnson to help make a case against a man who apparently was damaging to the company. We managed to infiltrate undetected and retrieve the files. The files combined with the data acquired from an associate to the man ensured success. That is all to report, sir."

Korban

Felt nice to knockout that scumbag to have our matrix-capable member take a look through, all five of his fraggin commlinks. Do feel slightly less nice about walloping the mage so hard, but part of the job and nothing a few days off shouldn't fix. Probably would've ghosted the entire thing if our magical friend had better hidden himself, but we managed it just fine all the same. Clean job for a good cause, I needed this.

Or@cle

Meeting a new J is always a bit unnerving, since she knows that she rubs people the wrong way, but she doesn't know with what exactly. And she doesn't want to ruin negotiations, this time went fine however, and they got a good deal for it. It was nice to work with Huntress again, she sometimes says weird things, but overal they seem to team up well. There was some excitement when the 2 guards entered the building everyone was in, but locking one of them up was too hilarious so that broke the tension up right there. It's also nice to hack through 5 dumbass commlinks, this guy was disgusting to say the least.
