Background
James grew up in the concrete jungle of New York City, the kind of place where survival was a daily struggle, and dreams of a better life were often crushed by the weight of poverty. His parents, both hard-working but barely scraping by, had little time for anything other than making ends meet. James was left to navigate the tough streets alone. He wasn’t a stranger to the hustle whether it was scrounging for food, getting into fights to protect his turf, or dodging shady figures looking to exploit the vulnerable. From an early age, he learned that the world didn’t care for you unless you had something to offer. The chaos of the streets forged him into a quick thinker, a scrapper, and a survivor. But he knew there had to be more to life than the daily grind of survival. So, when the opportunity to join the military presented itself, James saw it as his ticket out. At 18, James enlisted in the U.S. Army, drawn to the idea of order and discipline that contrasted so sharply with his upbringing. He was trained in demolitions, a specialty that suited his natural talent for tinkering and an obsessive curiosity about how things worked. His ability to handle explosives with precision quickly earned him a reputation as one of the best in his unit. During his time in the Army, he became more than just a demolitions expert—he learned to adapt under pressure, stay calm in the face of danger, and think three steps ahead. However, it was his knack for curiosity that would ultimately be his downfall. While stationed in various hotspots around the world, James’s curiosity about the military-industrial complex began to grow. One evening, while conducting routine maintenance on his equipment, he found himself in the restricted section of a military database. It was meant to be off-limits to soldiers like him—only the highest-ranking officers and certain corporate contractors had clearance to view it. But James couldn’t resist. His eyes opened up to classified corporate operations, covert experiments, and projects that raised questions he wasn’t prepared to answer. The thing is, James was a man of action not one to sit idle once curiosity had gotten the better of him. As he dug deeper, he uncovered disturbing information about a corporate-sponsored, black-market project involving dangerous tech and explosives. The discovery was enough to get him noticed. Unfortunately, not in a good way. After his snooping was discovered, James was ordered to defuse a rigged explosive—a bomb set in an underground facility meant to wipe out a corporate rival’s assets. But as he approached the device, he realized something was off. The explosive wasn’t designed just to destroy property it was designed to kill the person trying to disable it. And that person, as fate would have it, was James. The device was set with a trigger that, once tampered with, would activate a secondary set of explosives, meant to disintegrate anyone attempting to defuse it. What they hadn’t counted on was James’s quick thinking and experience. He knew the game they wanted him dead, but he had no intention of giving them the satisfaction. He worked fast, and though the device was deactivated in time, not before a secondary charge detonated. The explosion severed his left arm clean off, leaving James in excruciating pain as he collapsed to the floor. He was lucky to survive, but the Army wasn’t as lucky. With a severely wounded body and missing limb, James was medically discharged, his career cut short by forces more powerful than any explosion. With no home to return to and a future as uncertain as ever, James received an offer he couldn’t refuse. A buddy from his Army days, now connected in the shadowy world of mercenaries and shadowrunners, extended an invitation to him. The offer was simple: leave the wreckage of the Army behind and come to a new place where his skills would be valued. He had nothing left to lose, so he accepted. It wasn’t long before James found himself in the underbelly of Seattle, a place where anything could happen, and anyone could become someone if they had the right skills. Armed with a new prosthetic arm, state-of-the-art tech, and his deadly knowledge of demolitions, James quickly adapted to the life of a shadowrunner. He made a name for himself in the shadows, known for his expertise in explosives, his ability to dismantle even the most advanced security systems, and his cool demeanor under fire. His past in the Army, combined with his street smarts, made him an excellent addition to any team though he kept to himself, never fully trusting anyone.
