Summary

Drifter is an unarmed combat specialist thanks to her raw strength and her abilities as an adept.

Goals

She wants to redeem herself to her family by being something more than just a fighter, and to live free from the Yakuza.

Background

Born as the youngest sister in the Yoshimura family, Johanna grew alongside her brothers and sisters in the California Free State. From a young age, she was always the rowdiest of her siblings, constantly looking for a fight and getting into trouble. Much like her older brother, she had her awakening as an Adept at 7 years old and was entered into a program to educate Adept children, and what it meant to be one. Her father's older sister, a former runner and an Adept, taught the two of them what they wouldn't learn in school and in greater detail. This continued until her older brother reached maturity and joined the military, leaving her on her own to be taught by her aunt. Eventually, her aunt left to go on a security detail in Tir Tairngire when Johanna grew up as well.

Realising she had no notable skills other than fighting and how abandoned she felt after the two people she trusted the most went away, she turned to fighting to occupy her mind and keep herself active. After a few years of small time crime, as well as fighting petty challengers, she heard about a Fighting Ring and decided that she might as well be kicking ass while getting paid for it. However, on her way home after one of her matches, a few less-than-pleased spectators decided to let out their frustation by trying to rough Johanna up. Unbeknownst to them, some highly unstable black market magic goods were kicked around in the middle of the fight, causing it to combust and leading Johanna to Surge. She got away quick enough that she was spared the more obvious effects, but it was enough to severely change her.

In a panic, not knowing what to do, she decided to run away from her home, and moved to Seattle. Life was very difficult for a newcomer with no practical skills, leading her to join the Kenran-kai clan. For the next few years, she did as they ordered, living a life of crime and being somewhat respected by her peers for her brutality. But eventually she grew resentful of herself, feeling as if she had betrayed her family and its values. The feeling only worsened after finding out that her aunt currently lived in the city. Even worse, she soon learned after that her older brother was in Seattle as well, and that he had become a runner. Not long after, the gnawing at her mind became too much to bear and she abruptly resigned from the Yakuza. Having nowhere else to go, she sought out her aunt and asked for aid. Pulling some strings with old contacts, Johanna was able to gain a new fake Sin, Kotone Ameyama, and began on the path to becoming a runner. However, that would not be enough to completely fool the Kenran-kai, who placed a bounty on her head - Dead or Alive.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Changeling (Class III Surge), Fangs, Celerity, Retractable Claws: An explosion caused Drifter to surge, but this also affected her positively.
Shoot First Don't Ask, Acrobatic Defender: Thanks to her experience in hand-to-hand combat, she has honed her senses.
School of Hard Knocks: Her time as a delinquent has taught her more about the streets of Seattle than what the average person would know.
Adept: She has been taught since she was a child how to use her Adept Powers.
Low-Light Vision: Thanks to her being an Oni she can see better in the dark.

Negative

Cold-Blooded, Nocturnal: The explosion also affected her negatively however, changing her to be cold blooded and nocturnal- like a snake.
Striking Skin Pigmentation: Due to her being an Oni, her skin takes on a red tone.
Impaired Attribute (Charisma), Ugly and Doesn't Care: Growing up around criminals and as a lawbreaker herself, she didn't exactly learn good manners.
Wanted (25,000): The Kenran-kai clan weren't too happy about her desertion, and have placed a bounty on her head.

Appearance

Johanna is a tall, muscular, Oni woman. Her skin is a light tone of red, while her eyes have a darker shade of red. She has black, short and messy hair, barely reaching her neck. Despite being a SURGE, her only features that might give this away are her unnaturally sharp fangs, and her retractable claws she uses in battle. Due to her past in the Yakuza, her back is covered with a tattoo depicting the circle of drums carried by the Thunder God Raijin, as well as a beast with the appearance of a tiger, meant to represent a Raijū. This connects to a tattoo sleeve over her right arm, which is also themed around lightning and thunder and the Raijū.
