Summary

Failed attempt at creating an artificial bug spirit. Infected spider-themed SURGE.

Background

Gwen was an Ares project originally designed to take everything known about metahumans and magic and put them together to create an artificial bug spirit. They took the base metahuman closest to a bug (in their minds), infected at the age of 18, giving her adept powers, and put through a forced SURGE. Influenced by the bugs around her, she ended up taking the form of a spider, which they thought meant a success. They trained her and trained her, but soon realized that, although she was powerful, she was most definitely not an artificial spirit. She was scheduled for execution when the facility she was in was destroyed. Presuming her killed, she has dropped off of Ares' radar, although they may one day notice that she is back again. Whether or not they recognize their creation is another question.

She went into hiding, living on the streets for some time. She hadn't seen much of what the world was like, and didn't understand why others stayed so far away from her. She eventually learned to fit in as best she can, hiding her extra arms under a jacket. She fed originally on vagrants, since they resembled the types of metahumans she had been fed while in the lab. She learned to behave a little more like a typical metahuman, taking the name Gwen, learning it from old school comics that she took a liking to during this time.

As she fed on a ganger, a ghoul happened upon her. In exchange for the meat off the body, he put her in contact with Jonathan Johnson, who helped her get her start in the shadows. He helped her to integrate better, and she currently honors an agreement on what type of person to eat, namely those who try and hurt others. This is usually accomplished by standing on rooftops or alley walls and waiting for someone to get attacked, and then hitting them with her web and dragging them away to get eaten. This has led to a minor rumor of a superhero in the Puyallup Barrens.

Bad Rep

  She looks like a bug. People tend to draw their own conclusions.

Impassive

  Her extended time in the lab led to the experience of a lot of death, including a number who were simply given to her as food.
