Live forever.
Background
In the year 2011, elves and magic began to be reintroduced to the world. Born of two human parents, Nathan would be one such case of both instances. His parents, both well-respected doctors, chose to not let this unexplained phenomenon stop them from loving him as their son. Of course, life was formulated. Extra tutoring on top of private schooling, meetings with other families, and more were to be expected. After all, he was to become a doctor just like his parents. When it became apparent that elves were naturally more graceful and charismatic, of course, the expectations became greater.
Childhood was a difficult time for Nathan. All his peers, his fellow students, and almost everyone he had ever met was human. Pointed ears instead of round ones made him an outsider in an already rather exclusive club, not to mention his seeming inability to connect with others. Any who approached did it not out of genuine desire, but for one selfish reason or another. It was impossible to ignore the gossip. His own teachers treated him like a school pet or mascot. "Look at the elf! A new, foreign creature! Perfection in humanoid form!" It was a point of pride on their record, to have been blessed with the opportunity to teach an elf.
It only worsened when he Awakened. Now the goalpost had been moved for a third time, and his parents love grew stifling. He was the pride of the family, his own newly born sister (a human) likely to be held to a standard she couldn't handle all because of him. The guilt strangled Nathan. A teacher had been found for his magical abilities. A hermetic, who aided him in understanding what it meant to be a mage and how to cast spells. Magic was a wondrous thing. To be able to defy reality, make imagination come to life. Yet, as with all good things, the monkey's paw curled. The mundane cursed him for being twice-gifted in one breath, while begging him to fix their lives with another. With organizations like Humanis forming and on the rise, security became harsher as well to keep him from being harmed - too special a figure was he to be left unattended. Nathan couldn't even lift a glass by himself for fear it would harm him.
This led into his university life, where he registered for medical courses. By now he was treated like a sort of celebrity on campus, as said university wanted to pride itself on metahuman accommodations. The years dragged by, a grey blur that he barely remembers anymore, outside of one colorful instance. His first and only love, another elf who would eventually become his wife, appeared. They shared similar upbringings, barring the class divide and type of Awakened, as well as interests, hobbies, and dreams. It wasn't long until they entered a relationship, and not soon after when she convinced him to elope and enter the lands soon to be called Tir Tairngire in the year 2032.
Having finally found happiness and relief from the expectations forced upon him by those who discriminated against them, and hearing that the Salish-Shidhe were intending to invade the Land of Promise, Nathan couldn't stand aside and watch it happen. He and his wife signed up to join in the conflict, and due to his status as both a doctor of sorts and a mage and her as an adept with combat experience, were permitted to enter into the military. In honor of the officially recognized secession of Tir Tairngire, Nathan legally changed his name to fit an elf. For the next couple of years, the two served in the military, though at great cost.
It was an ambush, the reports say. She gave her life to save one of her men, taking a bullet through the throat. Nethuriel didn't handle the news well. He had his rank, his home, his status, and even a great fortune. It meant nothing without her. He was discharged from service and seemingly retired to being a civilian doctor. A darkness entered his mind. He wanted her, no, needed her by his side once again. He just needed to find out how. Keeping her body preserved, he threw himself into research. Reality made it impossible, but magic was all about doing the impossible. There had to be a way...
One doesn't make movements like this without attracting some kind of attention, however. Whether it is a secret cabal, a fringe group, or something else, a group of Infected made contact with him. They offered a gift, one which he took, and the promise they would return in due time to collect. They also opened his mind. There was only so much he could do staying in one place. Leaving his estate to trusted servants, Nethuriel made his way across the North American continent, eventually arriving in Seattle where supposedly the shadows move and one could find anything they desire.
Now all he had to do was take grasp of it.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
History Is Not As Certain As We Are Taught: Research into the unknowns and beyond eventually reaches a veil. Not all are strong enough to step forth and learn the truth.
Infected (Vampire): In his efforts, he managed to attract the attention of a group of Infected, which shared their "gift" with him in the hopes to one day collect on it.
Privileged Family Name: A count in his own right, though outside the lands of Tir Tairngire it matters very little.
Negative
Impassive/Antipathy: Long-lived and morose, it is hard to connect with others. Not that he really cares to.
Did You Just Call Me Dumb?: It is, of course, made exceptionally harder when he doesn't care to hide his distaste for people.
SINner (National) (Nethuriel Maevyrn): When the nation of Tir Tairngire was founded he chose fit to change his name, adopting a naming scheme fit for an elf.
Driven (Secrets of Necromancy): If one is to make the impossible possible, one must have all the knowledge at their disposal. He certainly has all the time in the world to amass it.
