Summary

Red Ribbon gets a tip-off that a former member of Chrome Crash is working as a Yakuza grunt. She digs in with the intention of figuring out what he’s doing, and getting him off that path whether she can negotiate about it — or if it’ll require a bullet to the head.

She is betrayed, and things go very, very wrong.

Background

Red Ribbon gets a call from Alessa P about a low-level info job looking for intel on a specific Yakuza member. This man just so happens to be a former member of Chrome Crash, the gang Ribbon ran with during her childhood. She thanks Alessa and starts digging in - searching on the Matrix, calling Bolt to get in contact with KE for intel, and then narrowing down the location in person with layered drone sweeps. The whole rigmarole leads her to a relatively insecure site in southern Puyallup, with a bunch of partying syndies.

It seems like an ordinary syndicate punch-up - Yakuza against Ancients - but something’s up. It’s strange that the Yakuza are pulling in lower-level street gangers, and Ribbon manages to catch a highly-stealthed drone with her Fly-Spy’s sensors before it suddenly vanishes. The drone seems to want her to investigate. Ribbon plays along for the moment.

After sending in her information packet, she is contacted by an off-network Johnson who expresses surprise at her efficacy. She is offered a job to sweep the Yakuza out of that area, and, loathe to refuse an opportunity to shoot up some Yaks, she accepts. The Johnson gives her a meeting location, and Ribbon heads there in her Saab Gladius.

The Meet

The team, Ribbon learns, consists of herself, a street samurai named Big Red, a street sam and off-decker named Subspider, and a new mage in town called Weaver. Subspider is obviously infatuated with Big Red, who seems oblivious to that fact. Ribbon’s Shadow Community means she knows them by general reputation, and two of the three strongly vouch for their fixer/johnson, putting Ribbon a little more at ease.

Ribbon mentions the invisible drone to them, and is met with recognition by Big Red - apparently nobody can find the thing on the Matrix. Big Red calls it “The Ghost.” The team agree to attempt to recon for the drone before hitting the site.

Weaver requests the use of Ribbon’s Rigger Cocoon, and Ribbon accepts - she doesn’t accept armor-piercing ammo or anti-materiel rifles from a bunch of Yakuza rabble, and some mages she’s worked with before prefer to solely summon spirits.

The Plan

The plan is simple: park the car nearby, the samurai and Ribbon’s drone sneak as close as they can, Weaver summons spirits for support, and they fall upon the Yakuza with fire and fury. Ribbon requests that they specifically kneecap her former ganger buddy rather than shooting to kill, and Big Red agrees.

The Run

Things almost immediately go wrong. The two samurai charge in - and then a blood spirit manifests inside Ribbon’s car. Ribbon immediately realizes that the mage is a traitor and hurls herself out of the car, leaving the spirit trapped inside, and shouts to the two samurai. Big Red starts running back to help, but Weaver is far faster than she should be for someone intending to stay in a car. She gets out and hits Ribbon with a devastating Powerbolt, and tells her to *run.*

Ribbon attempts to have her drones shoot Weaver, but unknown to her, she’s been MARKed - weaver is notified that the shots about to happen, and interrupts with a held turn to hit Ribbon with a second powerbolt, sending Ribbon to the ground.

A moment later, Ribbon awakens, apparently having been healed by Weaver. A terrifying Weaver says simply: “I said, *RUN*!”

Provided with a Movement spirit power, Ribbon’s fight or flight takes over, and she flees. Big Red is no longer trying to help - possibly affected by mind magic - but at this point, Ribbon is no longer paying attention. Her two teammates are gunned down as she sprints across the street, only to be SnS shotgunned into unconsciousness by a waiting Yakuza.

Her last words before falling to the ground are “Bastards…”

Later, Ribbon awakens in a Farraday-caged cell. Not on the meat - but on the Matrix, resonant and stifled by the wire around her. The only device she can access is the medical monitor connected to her. Unable to think of anything else, trying not to panic, and disoriented, she MARKs the monitor and finds that it’s directly connected to a terminal, which itself is connected to a charging commlink, turned off.

As she watches, the commlink turns on. It’s a cheap burner, so she uses her connection to mark it, and finds that she’s probably been picked up by MCT-affiliated hunters. Desperately and stretching the limits of her new powers, she makes an impression on an un-posted job description file, pouring everything she can about her experience into it. She can only hope someone will notice the change, underneath the surface data, when it’s posted.

Subspider dies in the aftermath. Big Red survives, but is wounded.
