Summary
A mother makes a mistake of dealing with a Fae. A post is made on behalf of Wira Łynar To 'free her daughter at any cost'. Words not wasted on ears, fae waiting with baited breath, for the collection of yet another plaything for their unseen schemes. The runners head through the veil of night to Saltspring island only to find that their mission was perhaps not as what it seemed. A chance encounter with Lord Lirael Rehr leads to the runners realizing they had been tricked, the entire time.
Background
A cold wind blows along active pass. Ash falls from the barrel of a gun. The forest creaks with weeping pines. Footsteps of a wolf and a fox, side by side. The two play happily, a mother and daughter. Through hollowed logs and hallowed boughs they hunt, seek, and learn. But all is not well, the forest they live in under threat, always. So, mother Wira Łynar, teachers her pup to scout and hide, and flee.
But from regular forest life, the pup of hers is safe. Yet, there are threats. Ithe, Hrududu, Elil. Many out there would seek them for pelt and paw, and one night, that is what happened. Iron, cage, locks. Steel of the Ithe, of Man.
So Wira fights, as much as she can, but by herself she is no fighter. She is a tender to the gardens, and a peacekeeper of the woods. So to fight the ones who carried steel, who shot their guns with their black powder and noise. She could not do it alone.
"Please, I'll give anything for you to free my daughter." The mother spoke, yearning for her daughters safe return.
"Anything?" A voice replied.
The Meet
The meet was uncanny. Usually, you meet your Johnson first. Yet, the post for the job came only with coordinates. Talking with a spirit, Anansi contracted them to divine the evening...
- Pink haired man who awaits on his throne.
- Many knights and steeds by his side.
- Someone will trick you... others are to be saved.
- If you aren't careful, that which is set in stone will be set in stone.
- What weighs heavier is not the 1000 feathers, but the weight of golden eyes.
And the image of a boat, came to mind. The coordinates led to a dock, which led to a captain, which led to the bargaining of passage to the SSC islands up north. The Ships Capain, Cpt. Lem Springthunder offers passage one way, or a return trip if they can finish their job in less than 7 hours. So, Anansi and Rurosha relax with song and dance with the crew.
The Plan
Hop on a Zodiac, find the johnson, figure out what they need to do, and get back before 7 hours arrive. Otherwise, they have to head back to Seattle without a boat.
The Run
Landing on the northern tip of the Salish Island of Saltspring, the team head deep into the forest to figure out what was drawing them near. Anansi used spirit powers to locate any metahumans, and found one, so they followed until the spirit lost track. Nearby however, was a fox, caught in a trap.
Upon taking a closer look, it was revealed that the fox was actually a shifter, who stepped in the trap while running from the humans Anansi and Rurosha. A close inspection of the trap realized there was another trap held above, but seeing it allowed the duo to save themselves and free the fox. After being freed, the fox ran away, but the runners came soon after.
Upon reaching a camp, the woman inside yelled for the runners not to come close, or they'd hit her mana barrier face first. Talking in Salish, the trio talked, as well as mind linked, about what was happening.
Wira explained, her daughter was taken by hunters, and they were nearby and making a muck of the forest. She was surprised that the help returning her daughter was people. While the were runners confused, they agreed to help. Wira told them the general location of the hunters, and the duo set off.
Getting closer, the hunters had set up their glamping experience; big tents, cars, drones, and a private security force. Luckily, Anansi and Rurosha spotted and clocked Monadh and her Ally spirit, who she named after Irf Nikk. Realizing that these people were only here because they were paid, the duo set up an ambush to take them out.
A quick but potentially deadly combat erupted which left much to be desired from the security forces. Monadh and her team put up a good fight, but the incredibly advantageous position wiped away the otherwise deadly combatants with overwhelming ease.
Rurosha broke open the cage and freed Wira's daughter, who presumably ran back home, while Anansi ate from Monadh, stealing a point of her essence.
Aftermath
Stop. The forest the runners stood in bloomed instantly, trapping them in a seemingly spring filled alternate dimension. A voice from the forest spoke out, addressing them directly. The dual natured Anansi could see and tell that an invisible Elvar spoke to them, applauding their efforts, but their return to Wira needed to be delayed. A tense conversation revealed much about this sect of the Unseelie's desires, and why they were here in Seattle.
"We have desires for the court, and its throne. But you see, we also have debts that need to be repaid. We desire only to repay those debts, and after our new playthings fulfil their purpose, they will be returned to where they belong, no harm or foul."
The duo spoke more with the invisible Elvar, who refused to offer a name, and while they could do little to stop them, they were soon let go to return to the sullen Wira. The Fae had struck a bargain with her that she did not understand. "I'll give anything for you to free my daughter." had a weighty undertone, for fae who refused to take anything less than exactly what they wanted.
Swearing herself to a life of vengeance, the Sage of the Forests traverses to Seattle to join some uncanny adventurers in the fight against the Fae...
