Character Information
Summary
Ex-Mystic Crusader swordsperson and magical scholar, ejected from the order for delving too deep into forbidden knowledge.
Goals
Slay and study Awakened threats to metahumanity. The enemy must not only be destroyed, but understood.
Acquire more knowledge on the Fourth World, free of interference from the Crusaders and others suppressing the truth.
Acquire wealth and renown independent of their family.
Break the curse that's warping their fate.
Background
Born to a wealthy family in the CAS's Democratic Reform Party, Ash Foster had every opportunity to have a cushy life. They could've followed in their father's footsteps and went into politics, but Ash's trajectory changed once testing flagged them as an Awakened. Although the young adept never manifested the ability to cast spells, instead a supernatural talent with swordsmanship that got Ash booted from their private school's fencing club and an unusual resistance to other's magic, they became utterly fascinated with magical studies. A fascination that was egged on by an otherworldly Raven that began appearing in Ash's dreams.
After getting their master's in Magical Theory at Georgia Tech, Ash was approached by a recruiter from the Atlantean Foundation and gladly accepted a research position. Shortly afterwards, it became apparent that their magical talents would be better utilized serving the Mystic Crusaders. Tempted by the opportunity to finally put their talents with the sword to good use and experience strange and dangerous Awakened threats up close and personal, the adept accepted the transfer to the allied organization. Even if it meant intense training and burning out much of their previous magical potential with combat ware to survive the threats they'd face.
Ash struggled under the strict standards set by the Crusaders. This came to a head during an Atlantean Foundation expedition into Deep Lacuna that their squad was providing security for. Despite receiving orders to avoid tampering with anything, Ash couldn't help theirself and, at the urging of Raven, broke away and found their way into a ritual chamber dating back to the Fourth World. Tampering with the artifacts within awakened the wild spirits inhabiting the caves, and implanted a sliver of a vision of the forgotten past into Foster's mind. Several researchers and Crusaders were injured in the ensuing battle, Omen was blamed for the catastrophe. They just barely escaped, only managing to fight off her commander, Elijah Rivera, thanks to his injuries.
Omen has struggled to find a new purpose since, unable to return home because of the risk of Atlantean Foundation and Mystic Crusader retaliation. They've worked their way up the West coast as a hunter of Awakened threats and hired blade in the shadows, and recently drifted into Seattle.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Scholar (College Education, Technical School Education, Speed Reading) - Between their master's degree in Theoretical Magic from Georgia Tech, experiential learning with the Mystic Crusaders, and a knack for devouring information at a frightening pace, Omen is no dumb muscle.
A Dangerous Curiosity (Mentor Spirit (Raven (Alt)), History Is Not As Certain As We Thought) - As a follower of Raven, Omen can't help themselves around interesting artifacts, hidden lore, and other intriguing goodies. This manifested most spectacularly when they tried to pocket a Fourth World relic during an expedition, resulting in their expulsion from the Mystic Crusaders, an imbuement of ancient truths, and a curse that twists fate against Omen.
Cursed by the Fates (Bad Luck, Spirit Bane (Guidance Spirits) - Ever since that expedition, something imperceptible has been wrong with Omen. Little things, at first, like getting trapped in traffic on the way to a meet or things breaking around their apartment. It's been steadily getting worse, though. Guns jamming in the middle of a firefight, their commlink suddenly blaring music while trying to sneak past guards. Not only that, but something in Omen's future has turned Guidance spirits against them.
Privileged Upbringing (SINner (National, CAS), Trust Fund I) - Omen comes from a wealthy family involved in CAS politics, diehard members of the Democratic Reform Party. They've kept their membership in (and dismissal from) the Mystic Crusaders secret, telling the family they've been part of a research project that requires lots of travel.
Enemy of the Order (Vendetta (Elijah Rivera - Mystic Crusader)) - Omen managed to escape judgement for going against orders and tampering with dangerous magicks, but the Mystic Crusaders aren't the type to forgive and forget. Elijah Rivera, her direct superior, especially wants to bring Omen to justice as he was held responsible for their actions and put on probation.
