Summary

As Seattle Software and Special Investigations opens its doors to start helping runners team up, Kate Markson and the armory division offers runners a chance to try out some weapons in their armory.

Background

S3I is the group that helped fight off the N-51 who tried to stop Farraday's clinic. After licking their wounds, they've opened their doors to help form new connections.

The Run

The runners meet at S3I's headquarters in downtown. Since they all came from downtown, it was easy enough for folks to arrive. Once inside, they all checked in with reception, who introduced them to Kate Markson. Kate showed the runners inside and offered a short history of S3I, and their recent conflict with the N-51.

The runners Omen, Chameleon and Krabbe were all interested in finding out more about Kate and S3I, especially given how many seemed suspicious of the nature of the option. Kate expressed that S3I wants to help those who are overlooked and underserved. Her term in the UCAS showed her that working with the military wasn't the right way to do so.

Yet, after a discussion, the team arrived at the armory and met Mischief, Mayhem, and Jules Le Fleur. The team seemed excited to have new folks around, and Mischief even had a nerdgasm when seeing that Krabbe was a full cyborg. After being told to calm down, Mischief settled down and the team got suited up for the shooting range. Chameleon took an Ak-97, and Omen took an Auto Assault 16.

Once in the range, the team spent a solid 30 minutes firing after receiving weapons and a rundown on range safety from Kate. The team are able to, with advice from Kate, improve their firing patterns at least a bit. Then, the subject of the obstacle course came up. Being challenged to beat Aleks Skliar's time of 1.55 seconds. Krabbe would come in with a time of 12 seconds, Chameleon in with 6 seconds, and Omen with 3 seconds.

Afterwards, the team enjoyed a break of snacks and returning the gear, continuing to chat with Kate. Kate expressed that S3I would want them to continue to work with them, but ultimately none decided to take a hiring package.

Aftermath

With the day being done, most of the runners headed home except for Omen, who could not resist the urge to ask to keep a sword she had been lent. The armory staff - Mischief - offered to sell it to her at cost, as it seemed like she had bonded with it. Afterwards, Kate said goodbye to the runners and stayed to finish up her tasks for the evening.

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

Chameleon:What a great day, I'm finally making some progress learning the Foxtrot. Learning ballroom dancing for both male and female roles is much harder than I thought it would be. Der Opa gave me a call about S3i; they're doing some discrete hiring in the shadows. I was worried that my previous work as a contractor for N-51 would be a problem but the old gnome told me that as long as I compartmentalize my work for conflicting employers it wouldn't be a problem, As usual he was right.

The firing range & kill room exercise were subtle recruiting tests. I wish I'd done better. The firing range was fine. Nice tight clusters for full auto bursts and centered single shots. The kill room exercise wasn't as good. Of the three of us, only Krabbe and Omen would have survived for sure. Omen made the most flashy double shots I've ever seen! Half the targets down at once! Krabbe is pretty slow but doesn't miss. The fourth target could have got a shot on him. But they're a fragging cyborg they can take the damage. The fourth target could have got a shot on me but I'm a glass cannon. I can deal damage but taking it is another story. If my alpha strike doesn't take down an opponent I'm in trouble. I should have ran instead of the combat shuffle.

The other runners were impressive. Omen took a vibrosword into the kill room but didn't use it. I was hoping to see some blade work; I'm more of a close combat person myself. Krabbe is the first cyborg I've met. I'm not sure whether I should feel envy or pity. There used to be a metahuman there but not much is left. Superhuman abilities at the cost of cuddling is not a deal I'd make but it may be that it wasn't really a choice. I'm not sure if I'll see Omen or Krabbe on future jobs with S3i, Krabbe seemed pretty hesitant. One thing for sure - I'd rather be working with them than against them.

Omen: I wasn't sure what to expect out of S3I, but the meeting was worthwhile. Their mission of protecting Seattleites might be an admirable one, one I would've been more eager to join a year ago, but priorities have... shifted. Still, work is work and I'm in no position to turn any down. Doesn't hurt that they have resources at their disposal that I've been sorely lacking since coming to Seattle, like a well stocked armory and a line on augmentations. Even if their armorers are a bit excitable.

I had trouble getting a read on the other two runners, Krabbe and Chameleon, didn't have much opportunity to chitchat. Perhaps we'll meet again, Krabbe's performance in the kill house was lackluster but I wonder what all that chrome can actually do.
