It shouldn't have been that fragging easy to get me to sign up for a team. Is that what I am? Am I a coward? The next time some corp rep shakes a stick at me, am I going to fold? Might as well be spineless at that point... and now I'm stuck here, in this irradiated waste. Fitting punishment, I guess. I need to do better, next time.

Summary

The runners are hired by an S-K Johnson to pull out some biometric data from a Rad Wars participant using the event as cover. Everything goes just fine, until it very much doesn't - but the team still manages to come away with a profit in the end. Surely their various corporate team signups won't have any future consequences!

Background

Amrei Veidt is in the doghouse after failing to foil some runners on a previous semi-prime excursion. Now consigned to the Rad Wars for her failures, she plots away to get back in her dragon boss's good graces. Step one: acquire some biometric data from a certain member of MCT's Rad Wars team.

The Meet

The J and the team meet in E-Wasted to discuss job details and payment. Amrei lays out the objectives - she needs several pieces of biometric data from a technician on MCT's Rad War's team, and she needs them acquired without the knowledge of the target. To facilitate this, she offers to pull some strings - either the runners can sign up with MCT get planted in the same squad as their target, or they can sign up with S-K and be part of the team assaulting that squad's position. Alternatively, smugglers can get them into the SOX, but this will take more time, money, and risks both sides shooting at them at once.

After some clarifying questions (and a failure to talk the J's offered price up), the meeting adjourns for the runners to plan.

The Plan

Almost immediately, Ahriman sends the rest of the team an ominous DNI message and then goes to join MCT's team. Before doing so, she takes Laes, ensuring she'll remember nothing about the meeting with the J, and leaves herself a small message prompting her to join up with MCT. Electing to trust herself, she proceeds, possessing only a commlink programmed to slave itself to Ribbon's PAN when it's started up again. The other runners are left only with a code phrase that will prompt her to trust them: "Carl was right."

Meanwhile, after some subcontracting and after Eidolon undergoes an ordeal trying to leave his home, the rest of the team decides to sign on with S-K rather than chance being shot at from all sides. Soon enough, they're on a suborbital flight towards the SOX.

On that flight, some Matrix legwork reveals background details on both the target and their ominous cyborg bodyguard, Unit 0384-Zeta. Hunter is able to resist the drive to throw the run into chaos for the opportunity to dig deeper, but manages to pull out a couple of leads for an unrelated personal task. It's decided that the plan should be to take out the cyborg to ensure he doesn't interfere with Ahriman's job first. In the process, they will wound the main target, requiring him to receive first aid. Then, Red Ribbon will pilot a rotodrone towards technician, apparently prepared to finish the job - only for the bot to be heroically wrecked by Ahriman. The bot will be carrying the biometric readers that Ahriman needs to acquire the data they need, which she'll pull from the wreckage and use to finish things up.

Meanwhile, Ahriman meets a medic named Haruki signed on with MCT, and engages in some casual conversation on the flight.

The Run

Once they touch down in the SOX, Eidolon sends over a message to Ahriman's clandestine commlink informing her of the plan. She's able to find a discreet spot to read that while Ribbon's matrix skills keep the activity safe from prying eyes. With their asset on the inside activated, the team then settles in for a good night's rest before the fight.

The day of comes quickly. At first, everything seems to be going reasonably. After being dropped in via helicopter, Red Ribbon slips the runnermobile through MCT's sensors and drone patrols, allowing the trio to get eyes on their target and invisible cyborg bodyguard.

...but no plan survives first contact with the enemy. Eidolon and Hunter exit the vehicle, only for Eidolon to be spotted out by Unit 0384-Zeta, who immediately begins to lock on with a terribly ominous Gauss rifle. Combat is joined and fire is exchanged, and Eidolon finds himself on the receiving end of a very-near-headshot.

While things go poorly on the borg-fighting front, Red Ribbon's Steel Lynx makes quick work of knocking out the principal target. A moment later, a rocket slams right into their vehicle's cover and sends both the Lynx and Hunter running for the hills, while Eidolon is saved only by his general toughness and pain editor. Ribbon commands the rotodrone carrying the equipment necessary for Ahriman to play her part forward, and thanks to the distracted cyborg bodyguard, she takes it down quite smoothly. Haruki gets taken out by a tranq patch, poor guy.

With that completed, the runners begin to make their escape, but are still under intense heavy weapons fire. They are aided by the timely arrival of an additional Saeder-Krupp rigger, who provides the additional processing power necessary to get Ribbon's car moving again. After a harrowing escape from some pursuing drones, the runners are finally free and clear.

Aftermath

The runners report their success to Amrei, whose migraine has apparently gotten no better. Variously exhausted and grumpy, they discuss the finished job and payment only briefly before wrapping up the conversation. As the run's objectives were completed in full, they are paid in full. Having signed on with either MCT or S-K, their biometrics have also been recorded! Joy of joys.

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

Angra Mainyu - My enemy. Now I'm with them. Perhaps they think they have me. Focus and concentration. I don't care what Saeder-Krupp does with this information. Their wars will continue regardless of my involvement. It's what MCT will do that I care about. Little by little, I'm perceiving a thread. And... perhaps it's something I shouldn't admit, but the thrill of research they're offering now? It's not lost on me. I can only hope those others got to safety.

Red Ribbon - It shouldn't have been that fragging easy to get me to sign up for a team. Is that what I am? Am I a coward? The next time some corp rep shakes a stick at me, am I going to fold? Might as well be spineless at that point... and now I'm stuck here, in this irradiated waste. Fitting punishment, I guess. I need to do better, next time.
