Summary

Ex-ganger reeling from survivor's guilt and the belief he accidentally murdered almost everyone important to him, seeking answers for why. Eastern Drake, follower of Monkey, patron of tricksters.

Background

Hai Zhang is the only child of a Chinese man - Yazhu Zhang - living in the Barrens, whose mother was around just long enough to have him and vanish into smoke. He developed keen talents in theft and a silver tongue rather early, and spent most of his teenage and early adult years in a gang called the Silver Dollars, a local conglomerate of grifters & sneaks - less good at direct confrontation, far superior to the average gang in doing sneaky stuff. Life went steady there for a while, even with dear old Dad trying to get Hai out of that business. He rose the ranks, met a sweet feathered SURGE girl named Anastasia, had a good thing going. Soon enough, he was basically third in command, handling inter-gang relations and making sure the other folks around didn't start enforcing their turf too hard. Then, some local Halloweeners got antsy that the Dollars were grifting too far into their territory, and in a last-ditch effort to avoid full-on confrontation (that they knew they would lose), the Dollars got them to agree on a neutral negotiation over territory rights. Fully armed, of course, but even with their leader temporarily incapacitated by a severe infection, they figured Hai could handle it. Unfortunately, between family pressure, relationship drama, the stress of the situation, and that weener bastard's annoying fragging voice, he just kinda… snapped. Next thing he knew, he's face down in a burning building, covered in blood & burns and surrounded by bodies. Later, after slipping back home, he would learn that apparently someone had turned into a dragon and the ensuing firefight killed basically every single Silver Dollar present, and most of the Halloweeners too. He went over the situation. Something had happened to cause negotiations to go south. He had a gap in his memory, and rumors were already spreading of a dragon sighting. He wasn’t sure what the hell had gone down, but there was a highly reasonable chance that he somehow turned into a dragon. That certainly can’t be good for his reputation. In fact, the rumor that nobody had survived was probably working in his favor! Hai, ever the pragmatist, decided his best bet would be to GTFO and hope he could burn this chapter of his life before it burnt him.

So, after a quick spot of burying his emotions and reassuring himself that this was just a setback, Hai elected to snatch up that fat rainy-day fund he was gonna use on Ana to start a new life across town and use his old skills to financial gain once again. This brings us to his intro to ShadowHaven, fresh off his third recommendation.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Dracoform (Eastern Drake) - Denarii is dragonspawn. This has universally been regarded as A Problem for him.

Mentor Spirit (Monkey) - Monkey, the trickster, favors swindles and cheats like Denarii. In return, he keeps doing what he's always done - applying bullshit until the other party accepts his absurd reality.

Negative

Big Regret (Downfall of the Silver Dollars) - Denarii is one of the few survivors of the Silver Dollars gang, a batch of thieves and swindlers who used to run con schemes in southwest Redmond. They were eradicated in an incident now only spoken of in hushed tones where, allegedly, a dragon got involved and burninated the entire gang, as well as the local Halloweener batch they were entreating over a territory dispute that they knew they couldn't win. Denarii suspects he was that dragon, and to say he regrets it is a bit of an understatement.

No Man Left Behind - Denarii will never let another die by his mistakes.
