|Though she believes that no living person, even her long-time Fixer, is aware of it, teenage Dice killed another teenager in Los Angeles while coming to terms with her Awakened abilities. It was meant to be more of a non-lethal payback before she realized that she could actually force people to abandon their own free will in addition to simple influence and mind-bending. The prank gone badly wrong taught her the cost of manipulation, and is a large part of what informs her current ethics around how she handles spells that control others. It has also driven her to pursue nuance between illusion and influence, and total control spells. She does use more overwhelming control spells and also acknowledges that people make their own choices on what they do, where they spend their time, etc. Still, even if it is impossible to account for everything, she is loathe to kill when not required. Street non-combatants - especially young mages - will find her a potential source of protection if they are being harmed or hunted by others. The dual sense of power and horror upon discovery that her talents could be deadly instead of transient still haunt her: that blood will always be on her hands.

Concept Summary

Themes of 'a rising tide lifts all boats' and force of will changing one's own fated stars despite adversity.

A displaced Dryad, Dice may not be a Face, but she's got a touch of the grift to support an enterprising individual who may need support with big jobs, particularly if they require crowd control. Her preference for ritual spellcasting reflects a love of clean, orderly operations and well-considered strategies in shadowruns. None of that clinical hermetic drek, mind you, but nice and tidy all the same. Too bad shadowrunning rarely stays on course the way event planning does...

She is vegetarian, like most of her kind, but survival trumps preference as it is with most people. She sees the Father Tree as a totem of seasons, wither and decay as much a part of the natural order of things as growth and life. She also has the philosophical outlook that her personal fortunes turn in such cycles also, which is part of why she can sometimes be persuaded to work on a favour economy for those who have accrued a positive reputation with her or her allies. If she can help someone here and there, she doesn't sweat it if a nuyen or two kicks over to someone in the winter of their career. If a little karma or good will swings back her way as a result, so much the better.

Though she keeps it well-concealed for fear it will be misinterpreted as an affinity for eco-terrorists, Dice also has ties to green interests within Puyallup that serve as a retreat for recovery alongside her private arboretum when the demands of the concrete jungle become too taxing, particularly if necessity requires her to delve too far into the vices of shadowrunner life in the city. Background

There is little Dice could share about her origins, even if she had a desire to talk about her past. She had parents who migrated from Tir na nOg to Tir Tairngire. Her first memories are of the latter, though while she was still young they moved to Los Angeles. Something about the prejudices of elves, though she was too young to understand much about it. She only remembers the looks her parents gave her as they whispered to themselves during the journey, something unreadable to her between fear and loathing. When she was around eleven years old, the city of Los Angeles was annexed by Pueblo after a major earthquake and socio-political unrest. After El Infierno's walls came down and the people flooded the surrounding areas, she was fortunate to be alive. She believes that her parents died in the violence before Pueblo stepped in, and she spent several years on the streets picking up odd jobs where she could. During this period, she discovered that humans and metahumans have the same basic desires, and most of them will selfishly and single-mindedly pursue those ends regardless of the means. Awakened, she made some missteps with her budding affinity for Illusion and Manipulation that she would rather forget. It was hard, but she faltered her way to a better understanding of her magic and spent time at local libraries pouring through whatever she could find about shamanic tradition and spirits. The streets taught her the resourcefulness to survive and scavenge reagents for her work.

By 2064, about three years since she had lost her parents, she had found steady work as an event coordinator and local darling at a small watering hole popular with the corporate set. It was there after Crash 2.0 and the implementation of Horizon's new wireless Matrix technology that she met Ace Powers, who frequented her place of employment when in the city. SINless, she believes that her parents were as well. If not, she has no idea if she ever had a SIN herself, and has never worked above the table. Despite her situation, Dice felt lucky and the crumpled screamsheets in her coat pockets that gave her a glimpse of the fashionable, luxurious lifestyles in Paris and Harakuju and London and Berlin kept her warm and motivated when her days were long. Powers served as a sort of Fixer, and she did a few jobs for Johnsons connected with Virtual Disney before she turned 18. It was through those limited shadowruns that she really started to see the possibilities of expanding her skills to crowd control. She took her hard-earned savings and conversational Aztlan and hopped transport to Seattle, where she began building her professional brand by working as a casino and club promoter at the Daisy Chain and the Underground. Now, she also works with Stuck's Carnival and many of the venues in the Seattle exclave, though she favours the more upscale spots like the Alabaster Maiden and Club Penumbra. The Psychadelic Pirate and the Underground are her favourites for event coordination and for cutting loose in her limited downtime.

When she's not pursuing her entertainment career and networking with others in the industry, she goes out of her way to make the acquaintance of other elves on the rise, especially other Dryads. She volunteers downtown with Charybdis at the local library. She also spends times helping to develop the Barrens in Puyallup in support of Mint and her organization. Someday she wants to open her own co-op to help make fresh produce accessible to everyone and to establish seed banks and urban gardening classes in collaboration with the local library system. Like many of the refugees living within Tarislar, Dice has spent most of her time in Seattle navigating the mistrust of elves that runs rampant within the exclave - hatred she has known her whole life. The general infighting between groups that clash for control of Tarislar alongside the corporations keeps things lively, but she has learned to step between the raindrops by treating those she meets with respect and courtesy. Dryad appearance being what it is doubtless helps. Her affinity for illusion and manipulation magic have developed as a sort of protection where her natural charms fail. The Knight Errant arrangement in her neighborhood provides more security than some of the seedier surrounding areas. While her star rises, she has turned to shadowrunning to advance her interests and to help sustain a modest, but relatively comfortable and safe, lifestyle in Talislar. She still takes on work from Powers, but she is also interested in pursuing contacts within Flash Star! and other entertainment companies also. The latter has interests in achieving AA status, which gives her pause despite being drawn to the idea of working with other Dryads like golden child and nepo-baby Axilia Selmer. In addition to her work for Mint, Dice also tries to employ those afflicted with HMHVV, including utilizing a personal driver on staff with Silver Ash Private Investigations, a company that hires and raises the profile of vampires and other infected by highlighting their positive contributions to society. For now, Dice also actively avoids association with eco-terrorists and socialites like Chloe Green who associate with them as she furthers her personal goals. She is not above using them to make connections with those powerful enough to help her make her co-op - and the sacred grove she wants to establish there as a shamanic lodge - a reality. The perks of working with high-end clientele aren't lost on her. She still has the same yearning for the finer things she always did, but now those screamsheets paper her living space along with books of poetry, philosophy, politics, and lore. The arboretum helps her recharge and stay attuned in the middle of wasteland and urban sprawl.

She has a lot of misgivings about leaning into shadowrunning again, but between Mint and the other contacts she has made, she is hopeful that she can contribute to better circumstances for people who also find themselves on the streets. Her talismonger and forger connections from her youth in Los Angeles are still part of her circle today. She is a support for ritual spellcasting, helping people plot long-term work rather than quick, single-job returns. She also acts as a support to one-on-one faces, able to step in where disguises are handy or large groups need to be managed for distraction or other similar jobs.

Appearance

Dryads are notable for their attractiveness, and Dice is no exception. Her copper red hair and green eyes paired with pale skin and a willowy frame that is somewhat taller than most Dryads. Her penchant for fine clothes and good company are supported by her work, which requires her to maintain a certain level of fashion and polish. Occasionally, this does bleed into her shadowrunning in the form of belted camo jackets and other accessorized attire which might seem a little out of place in a typical crew. She can play the honeypot, but she secretly despises anyone who sees her as a possession rather than a living, thinking creature unto herself. She is more of a dreamer than she would ever let on, and she has seen too many dead or lost to their vices early to want to open up to others. Despite this, she tends to keep her interactions as light and pleasant as possible; flirts on occasion and has an open demeanor despite trusting very few. Those few who do earn her trust, however, are in for life as she is extremely loyal to her own.

Character Plot Hooks

Brighter Tomorrow; Community Forward Redmond Rejuvenation Project is work experience and effort supporting her efforts to build her own co-op and shamanic grove. She works with the dryad Charybdis to maintain a small seed bank at one location of the Seattle exclave library, but she wishes to expand the program. She keeps this goal quiet and entirely separate from her shadowrunning, but she links up with other elves and individuals who wish to build stronger communities together within the exclave. This also includes supporting HMHVV infected individuals through patronage and work with organizations that employ people with the virus.
Cost to Climb Her work in the entertainment industry has thus far not hindered her shadowrunning, especially since she early on took jobs related to Virtual Disney. She wants her career to keep climbing, but worries if it does that will increase the odds of her being recognized. Additionally, she worries that her Horizon fixer could always double-cross her. She is curious about Flash Star!, especially Axilia Selmer, but fears that the company's goal of achieving AA might make her susceptible to recruitment - and potentially extraction - if she pursues this.
Left for Dead Born in Tir na nOg and immigrating to Tir Tairngire, Dice's family moved again to Los Angeles where she was orphaned around age eleven. She feels lucky that her parents were SINless. She feels less lucky that they were both human and angry to have the misfortune of a dryad for a daughter. Had they survived, Dice suspects she might have found herself in corporate hands. She never discusses this, but what Dice herself does not know is that her parents did not die after El Infierno. They simply abandoned her to the chaos and violence of the rioting.
Never Forget (Big Regret) Though she believes that no living person, even her long-time Fixer, is aware of it, teenage Dice killed another teenager in Los Angeles while coming to terms with her Awakened abilities. It was meant to be more of a non-lethal payback before she realized that she could actually force people to abandon their own free will in addition to simple influence and mind-bending. The prank gone badly wrong taught her the cost of manipulation, and is a large part of what informs her current ethics around how she handles spells that control others. It has also driven her to pursue nuance between illusion and influence, and total control spells. She does use more overwhelming control spells and also acknowledges that people make their own choices on what they do, where they spend their time, etc. Still, even if it is impossible to account for everything, she is loathe to kill when not required. Street non-combatants - especially young mages - will find her a potential source of protection if they are being harmed or hunted by others. The dual sense of power and horror upon discovery that her talents could be deadly instead of transient still haunt her: that blood will always be on her hands.
