Character Information
Summary
An arcane acquisitions specialist hailing from the Italian Federation. Seems to be voluntarily mute, fully capable of speaking and yet choosing not to. Proficient in sensory magic - both those of enhancing and obscuring.
Goals
- Learn the secrets of G_d. Reveal Its true nature to others. Hide from Its gaze, for It is surely furious with the apostate.
- Find a new face. One that is comfortable to wear. The old one never suited the apostate, anyway.
- Seek weapons to face down Its servants, for the apostate is no longer bound by a vow of nonviolence.
Narrative Significant Qualities
I Saw His Throne, It Was Made of Bones (Flashbacks [Holy Spirits], Insomnia, Willpower 1) - Augur stared G-d in the face. He still stares back. They can never escape His gaze, and in their dreams, He can reach out and touch them.
"Natural" Talent (Blandness, Hawk Eye, Uncanny Healer, Phonophobia) - Through the Church's rigorous training and conditioning, Augur's talents have been honed to a knife's edge; however, the pressures have worn their nerves down just the same.
SINNER, SINNER, SINNER (History Is Not As Certain As We Are Taught, Vendetta [Vigilia Evangelica]) - They have gained forbidden knowledge of the thing which we foolishly call G-d. Their old associates believe them a delusional apostate carrying too much valuable data. Both believe the other must be brought back into the true light, or destroyed by it.
Character Plot Hooks
Here are characteristics of the character that GMs may take advantage of to add complications to runs, or to otherwise use when in use. If you want to use them in unrelated to runs, please ask first.

| Touched By G-d | There is a thing which lives beyond the veil. It tells you its name is G-d, and you will believe It. Luciano has seen Its face, and can never truly purge the Horror from their mind. Moreover, Its servants believe they are an apostate, and wish them dead for the crime of straying from Its light. This will all catch up to them, one day. | |
| Foreigner | Luciano doesn't know this city, and doesn't seem to care much to learn. They will regularly encounter hurdles that the average Seattleite would know how to avoid intuitively. | |
| Broken Will | Revelations can repair a damaged soul. They can just as easily shatter it beyond recognition. Luciano's conviction is ruined, and remains highly susceptible to many forms of manipulation. | |
| A Taste for Blood | The thing which was contained within the Vitreous Eye was awakened by Luciano's blood and freed by Luciano's hand. Surely, it will not be content to ravage their hometown. One must thank their liberator in time, no? |
Background
Luciano was not a normal child.
He always knew this, of course. He never clicked with the other boys growing up on the streets of Napoli. He could win their favor, yes - trinkets and cred, stolen from tourists distracted by architecture and street shows, served as a wonderful bribe - but that was all.
And he was fine with this. He didn't need sympathy, just edible meals and somewhere quiet to think & practice with his spark of magic. Thus, young Luciano found himself at Church more and more, as he grew up. He became quiet friends with a number of priests, and while originally he felt little devotion to the Faith, it proved a rather comfortable medium for channeling his spellcraft - at first just assigning formulaic prayer to particular spells, but over the years, he grew almost passionate about it.
In time, he would become a regular attendant, and effectively join the Clergy as a part-time helping hand, whenever he wasn’t busy picking pockets. He would count his profits in the back pews, and slip a fair cut of it into the donation basket. He did not feel like he truly fit, but… it would do.
Then, a gruff mute came to the congregation, oddly curious about Luciano’s talents. He always came to sit by him while he counted, and learned many of his useless little secrets. Where his money came from, where he thinks his parents went, what verses he enjoyed, how he always felt a little distant from the others.
He also learned that Luciano did, in fact, possess the flavor of arcana he sought.
Some time later, Luciano stopped showing up to Church. He told his few close acquaintances that he’d been offered a chance to work somewhere out of town, that he might be back if it doesn’t work out. That was, however, the last anyone saw of him.
Wearing that face, anyway.
See, that man was not just a gruff mute - indeed, he was Deacon Marco, a recruiter for the Vigilia Evangelica’s acquisitional branch seeking talented young bodies with a connection to Christ and a need to be part of something. Luciano fit these specifications exactly, and was swiftly shuttled to Vatican City, where he would spend the next seven years training among cohorts of troubled youngsters
To go into detail here would be a significant bloat, but the long and the short of it is - during this time, he made several acquaintances who would disperse amongst Church organizations, was formally trained in the skills that would let him serve as one of the Lord's silent custodians, and was thoroughly indoctrinated in the ways of the Church; no deviant behavior would be tolerated, as a moment’s hesitation could mean dangerous relics fall into even worse hands. Luciano was molded into a faithful servant of the Lord’s will, schooled into a remarkably talented infiltrator. He was even bestowed with a blessing of purity, which would forevermore keep his body in good health.
(This was, in fact, a punishment. Luciano had recently gone against a decision made by his superiors and had a datajack installed in his wrist, confident that superior interfacing would make the job of the Church’s small technologically-minded branch easier. This “blessing of purity” would keep him healthy, but it would forever try to reject the implant. They would always feel the itch of something unholy around their wrist. These days, they take comfort in this little rebellion.)
Luciano was a good servant. A redeemed criminal who now served G-d faithfully.
But then, he found Him.
There had always been rumors of things buried deep below sacred earth. Things too dangerous to be kept anywhere that could be accessed by hostile elements, so they were buried deep, in ground so holy no evil could hope to unearth itself.
The official story, of course, is that these are mere rumors. Such things would be safely protected in the Vatican's containment vaults, not left under a church - and Luciano agreed! Who would be so foolish? I mean, it's not like he ever saw proof of such a practice.
Or… he hadn't, until the events of June 6th, 2086.
It seemed to be a routine deployment, really. A suspicious group had become active in Napoli, and so Luciano - being familiar with the town - was sent to investigate, and retrieve any items of interest.
Now, here's the trouble with a group like the Vigilia Evangelica. They feel a need to crush every individual into a particular mold of "the perfect agent", and in doing so breed a level of resentment in even their most devoted followers. This forces them to occasionally withhold information, because you can't always trust someone to operate the way you want them to if they hate you - information such as the fact that those rumors had a kernel of truth to them, and that this group had in fact unearthed such a relic.
The details of it are lost to history. The exact mechanics of its function are still unknown to this day. All they knew was that there was something inside this hauntingly realistic glass eye that carried a great power, and that the last person to touch it was overcome with visions of a world bathed in its resplendent light.
Luciano's preliminary investigations revealed much about the cult, but not the relic. This thing had apparently been sitting directly under the church he once attended, uncovered when a local gang leader took it over on the command of some esoteric dream and fetched it from deep below. Frankly speaking, the "cult" was nothing to worry about - he could slip in, grab the eye, and leave without a hitch.
The hitch in his plan came with an unknown Aware in their ranks. His invisibility was seen through during exfil, and a brief scuffle ensued - granted, a gonk with a knife versus a trained agent of the Church carrying a handgun wasn't ever gonna end in knife-guy's favor, but they did cut a gash in his enchanting gloves. Nothing major - the astral seal would remain intact - but a not-insignificant amount of blood would spill through over the next couple minutes. Luciano paid it no mind and rushed to retrieve the dropped relic, using his clean hand to stash his gun.
Blood wept through his wound. It stained the iris of the Vitreous Eye, painting its world red.
Blood is a part of the body.
Luciano witnessed God.
There are not words in any language Luciano knows to explain what was witnessed in the moment his blood touched the Eye. It was holy, it was incongruent, it was radiant, it was incomprehensible. It had eyes, eyes, eyes, it moved across a dozen axes, it cast a shadow behind Luciano's mind, it was...
God.
Luciano witnessed God.
There is no other being which it could possibly be, and yet...
This is what he worshipped?
This is what he prayed to? This is... God?
...
Disgusting.
The Vitreous Eye may have been magical in nature, but it was still just glass, and marred with biological impurities besides. It could not hold up to an adrenaline-fueled death grip.
It shattered, and G-d was set free, spilt right into Luciano's smeared blood.
Nobody ever saw Luciano again. All they know is that his false ID was used to board a boat to Seattle, and that Napoli saw a string of gory homicides that month.
Augur now operates under a series of false identities, never holding the same face for more than a week. They are reliable and talented, but twitchy and often unsettling. They don't seem keen on talking "past".
But so long as they get the job done, who cares?
