Character Information

Background

Viper was born as Anzelm Ząbek in 2053, in the National Republic of Poland. Both of his parents were former shadowrunners---his mother specialized as a face and a grifter, and his father was an infiltration specialist. Both of them had frequently teamed up on runs together, and eventually they decided to get married and attempt to go legit. The increasing unrest in Poland put a damper on that. In 2061, they contacted a smuggler and fled with Anzelm in tow. Their new home base ended up being an old stomping ground of theirs: Seattle. There, Anzelm grew up relatively safe---certainly not the most luxurious of childhoods, but he, and later on his younger sister Elena, had a roof over their heads and food to eat, their parents teaching them tricks of their respective trades. Anzel, to the surprise of both his mundane parents, awakened at age thirteen. when he accidentally discharged a lightning bolt in the direction of a schoolyard bully who had been picking on him and his sister. The other child actually ended up unharmed due to bad aim, but Anzelm lost control of the mana and the lightning rebounded on him, causing fractal scarring over most of his body and some of his face.

Shortly after this, Veles, the Slavic god of magic, trickery, and snakes, became Anzelm's mentor spirit. Veles frequently pushed the notably shy Anzelm out of his comfort zone, forcing him into more social situations and teaching him how to lie and charm people in addition to magic. Under his tutelage Anzelm became a talented mage and healer, who managed to con and steal enough money to put himself through medical school. It's likely he would have been perfectly content staying semi-legit, if it weren't for what happened when he went home for a visit after completing his residency. While the family was out for a walk, a Humanis supporter opened fire on the street, targeting every non-human he saw. Anzelm threw up a barrier around his family, but for his parents it was too late.

In the aftermath of the shooting, struggling with his own grief while trying to support his sister as well, Anzelm contacted Ellie Esps, an old friend of his parents, and started doing minor shadowruns. He took the alias "Viper" as a nod to his patron (and to his own love of snakes.) Part of why he started running, he supposed, was to carry on his parents' legacy. The money and the opportunity to actually have an impact on the world didn't hurt, either.
