Summary

Three runners steal a fridge for an AI to live in. Somehow a go-gang gets dragged into the mix.

Background

A few months ago, Trideo microcelebrity Richardson Nash owned a one-of-a-kind SOTA refrigerator, which had been a gift for him from Horizon after he signed on.

The Meet

The runners were invited to a VR chatroom/cafe for the meet. The Johnson outlined the job: stealing a specific fridge from a certain celebrity. The J's cover story of being a "collector" was immediately seen through by the team, who sensed desperation on the J's part to get this SOTA fridge--desperation that could only be born of a Persnickety Renter-afflicted AI forced to upgrade to a higher-tech fridge to compensate for increasing Depth. With this in mind the team was able to squeeze Mr. Johnson for all his spare funds. The team was given a week to perform the job, and were asked to not kill anyone along the way.

After the virtual meet, the team met up in meatspace at The Daze to plan the job.

The Plan

After some searches, the runners dug up Richardson Nash's schedule and determined that he would be out of the house for most of the day during the following workweek. Wanting to avoid a violent confrontation with a celebrity and hoping that part of his security detail would follow the man, the team resolved to steal the fridge while Nash was out of the house.

The fridge was located in a house in Bellevue, so the runners had to figure out an entry and exit plan. They had a van to carry the fridge, but wanted an ironclad exit strategy in case they incurred heat during the job. Knowledge of smuggler routes turned up a conspicuous lack of OU entrances near Bellevue, but Psyche remembered that the 405 highway is frequented by the 405 Hellhounds gang, whose rampages can draw Knight Errant attention away from the rest of the highway. It was decided that the runners would instigate a go-gang incident with Knight Errant timed to coincide with their heist.

The next day, Honeypie began to sow the seeds of chaos among the Hellhounds. Going in disguised as a biker, she caught the ear of a gang member and convinced him that the Ancients were going to make a move for the southern Bellevue 405 highway the next day. Meanwhile, Psyche and Clown headed to suburban Bellevue to scope out Richardson Nash's house. After bypassing a SIN checkpoint, they checked out the matrix and astral security of the house, finding minimal defenses on both fronts.

A simple plan was formulated. The runners would insert themselves into the house's schedule as HVAC repair workers, then flood the house with Neurostun. From there, they would enter, grab the fridge, turn invisible, put the fridge in the truck, and leave for somewhere less policed until they could arrange a handoff with the J.

The Run

The evening before the heist, the team headed out to southern Bellevue to tag the highway with Ancients graffiti. This was in order to draw the 405 Hellhounds' attention long enough to draw KE to their presence.

On the day of the run (after the refrigerator's owner had left) the runners piled into their van and headed for the suburbs of Bellevue. After a long struggle with an underpowered SIN scanner, the team made it through the security checkpoint and approached the house. With the HVAC repair appointment slipped into the schedule, Honeypie had no issue slipping knockout gas into the vents, incapacitating all occupants of the house.

From there, Honeypie cut open a window and boosted Psyche inside to unlock a door. With a floor plan ripped from a cleaning drone the kitchen was located without any trouble. [Psyche] stopped to steal all the appliances in the kitchen to enhance his lifestyle (and would later loot the fridge for its contents). Honeypie was able to lift the fridge easily, and with an invisibility spell from Psyche was able to take the device out without attracting attention. So far no alarms had been raised, though the runners skipped erasing the house's security camera footage in their haste to leave. With Knight Errant mobilized to deal with the Hellhounds the northern 405 highway was unpatrolled, letting the runners slip into Redmond unopposed. There they contacted Mr. Johnson, made the hand-off uneventfully, and erased all the RFID tags on the waffle makers, blenders, and other appliances Psyche had grabbed on his way out.

Aftermath

The celebrity chef is very much aware that his kitchen was ransacked, but the stealing of everything not nailed down accidentally obfuscated the team's true objective. The runners were disguised at the time, and did not leave a trail for authorities to follow. None of the stolen equipment was fenced or ditched, and the vehicle used for the theft had morphing license plates and spoof chips, and had escaped into Redmond by the time the theft was reported.

Two 405 Hellhounds were killed in a scuffle with Knight Errant, and more were injured and/or arrested. Everyone involved is confused as to why the Ancients never showed up. The Ancients haven't caught wind of their having been impersonated... yet.

Mr. Johnson's home device is now a SOTA RGB gamer fridge.

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

Psyche "Good job. Good team. Pleasant to work with thorough professionals. We probably took this job more seriously than we absolutely had to for efficacy, but I think treating every job like failure comes with consequences is helpful. Also, this was a very well timed job. I was starting to get sick from a poor diet and worse living conditions. I upgraded my house with the payoff and stocked my kitchen from odds and ends off the gig. Good Day. Learned some new tricks as well."
