Overview

X is an escaped Aztechnology experiment turned extreme and eccentric 'ware doc. He, of course, lacks actual medical training, but a lifetime of self modification has been more than enough practice!

Backstory

X was born in a lab, deep in Aztlan. The circumstances of their early life are very hazy, but he was, until his teenage years, flesh and blood. Mostly, anyway. Genemodding and bleeding edge delta-tech doesn't even begin to describe the forces at play here. X was one of 25 subjects in their experiment. 10 would survive the jump to the bionutrient gel, only 6 made it to the experimentation phase. X and the others that 'made it' had survived long enough to be deemed stable, and could begin being used to experiment with the effects of extreme essence loss, the efficiency of developmental cyberware technology, the magical impact of a distinct lack of physical body, and more. These tests were cold and clinical and often enough X's pain receptors were simply turned off. They didn't hurt, but sometimes he almost wished they did. What wasn't turned off, most of the time, was his brain, and he watched his body get flayed and put back together a dozen ways over a handful of years.

Eventually, things would start to decline. His trial had been a success, but the body can only take so much. The lab group decided they'd transition X and their remaining 'siblings' to the Security division, to be used as high grade shock troops for off-book missions. It was in this that Aztechnology erred. They had beaten down the jarhead's psyche so heavily, it was sometimes hard to tell when physical permissions were actually enabled. They often sat still and appeared paralyzed, even when in full control. There was never a point to moving around, not unless forced. There had never been anywhere to go. This meant that when X's permissions were incorrectly set for the trip from the Lab to the black site, a miracle happened. No one noticed, and given the internal route of the caravan, the group of base security guards driving the rig weren't much of an obstacle. X was never one for much fighting, but their small size and speed allowed them to sneak away, and their metal body allowed them to survive contact with the highway at 100 km/h.

In the last few years, they have traded secrets of their past, and the experimental equipment inside their own body in exchange for money, and more importantly, connections. They have become an obssesively committed dealer of augmentations of all kinds. This likely stems from their own obsession with such things, obviously seeking to assert control over their own body, as they had never had before. X is now in a place where the calls coming in outweigh the time in the day, and only now are they starting to realize that there is more to life than safety and success.

At this point in his life, X is looking to fulfill their passions, their hobbies, and keep to their anarchist ideals. In terms of goals, they'd like to try getting more well connected further outside the scope of the UCAS & NAN. But more than anything, they're looking for their surviving 'siblings', if any are even alive.

Personality & Details

  • Overall, personally, X is good natured and jovial. It's not uncommon for them to crack jokes, behave sporadically in a way that is probably endearing to some and bothersome to others. At the end of the day, they love what they do wholeheartedly, they're just a little unstable.
  • X is very uncomfortable with any type of formality or 'corp speak'. This is not a genuine negative aspect (bad manners are perfectly acceptable and as such so test is needed), but he will try to break through any such social performance, and may become uncooperative should it continue.
  • They are also very private about themselves in almost every respect. They're happy to talk about cyberware (including their own) or business in a broad sense, but never divulges their suppliers or their history with AZT (exceptions made for anyone which bypasses their 'Private Life' Aspect qualifications).
  • When not working, X is often doing something suitably unbelievabe. Even when on call, he may be in the middle of a surgery, an exotic excursion, in an unreasonable location, or simply playing video games. Should the character succeed on their availability test, X will of course be available as the results indicate, and are able to secure themselves quick passage for the sake of business with their wide web of connections.
  • Any of X's augmentation installation areas are ran by a rotating cast of local Street Docs. The Docs are hired on by X and vetted through a secretive process to occasionally be given work through his network. These skilled surgeons know little about the network or their employer (though they may know one another). They are most often exiled doctors without the ambition and social skills required to be a 'ware supplier with their own business. If you pass X's "Private Life" aspect, he will perform the surgeries himself, complete with a constant stream of Telenovelas to keep him entertained while doing so.
  • Essentially all of X's deliveries are by dead drop (to an obscure location or an available cyberware clinic as needed). To maintain a little bit of personal warmth, they leave slightly cheesy handwritten thank-yous with any purchase of 10k nuyen or greater.

Aspects Description

First 5 Negative Aspects are taken from existing contacts with slight reflavoring (changing of factions, changing time of day, all numbers kept the same). The concept for the 6th was approved, though it was also inspired by more complex Aspects with similar outcomes. Most Positive Aspects are taken from existing contacts as well.

Aspect Description
Working Hours Doing all this shadow work pays rent, and tends to fill up the “shiny fun stuff” fund pretty quickly! X figures they need plenty of time to enjoy that, otherwise, why bother? X puts in 8 hours a day and then finds something else to do. Any contact availability tests performed outside their normal hours (2am-6am & 2pm-6pm PST) automatically fail. Services can be scheduled for times outside this window, if planned well in advance.
Private Life X is reclusive to a fault, preferring digital interactions to physical ones. Only those with a Loyalty 5+ can physically visit them. The only exception is a character with Corporate Pariah or Wanted qualities relating to Aztechnology, even then, they must have Loyalty 4+. Gear is delivered via dead drop only.
Hard to Reach Always make an availability test for this contact with their Connection 3 higher than normal.
Wanted X is wanted by Aztechnology, 500k nuyen bounty alive, 200k dead. This may cause AZT contacts or X to lose loyalty should the runner work for the other party, at GM’s (or Contact Owner’s) discretion.
True Believer X will never provide any assistance which serves to harm the Black Star or Black Cross organizations. If a runner with X as a contact does work against these groups, they immediately lose a point of loyalty, if this brings X’s loyalty to 0, the runner is burned. Given their high connection and wide network, assume they will catch wind of any such jobs.
Not Your Fixer X has a wide network of other cyberdocs, illicit distributors, and old friends. They value this network more than their life, and their privacy almost as much. X will never roll Networking checks unless offered a chip in addition to any other fees for the service.
Looking For a Challenge X loves exotic items, and securing them reliably has brought them into the tighter, darker circles in which they now dwell. They gain a +2 on tests relating to items of Availability 16 or higher.
To Be Governed ...is to be coerced by physical threat of violence. Violating laws is not just fun, it’s a moral imperative! X gains a +2 on tests relating to items of restricted or forbidden availability.
Flesh is a Cage ...and “essence” is a lie! X wants all of his friends to find inner peace. Luckily for them, X has access to plenty of backroom chop shops and corporate surplus augs to make that happen! X gains a +2 on tests relating to augmentations.
Titanium-alloy Backbone Cyberware is X’s personal favorite, and they will gladly sing its praises to anyone who cares (or doesn’t care) to listen. They have memorized every specification and dimension for every piece they’ve encountered. X gets a +2 on tests relating to Nanoware or Cyberware.
Efficiency in All Things X always pushes their customers to consider higher grades. It’s no problem to find (usually), and it’ll be better in the long run! X gains a +2 relating to augmentations of Alphaware grade or higher. However, they will not locate ‘ware of Used grade.
Keep the Change Moving up in the world, eh? X will always try to encourage additional upgrades, and ask that they keep the old ‘ware. They are obfuscatory about the reason why. X gains a +2 on all tests to upgrade existing augmentations. However, any character who upgrades this way will leave X with a sizeable sample of their DNA.
“I prefer the shiny stuff.” Metal is reassuring in a way that skin and bone never was. X has a strong preference for obvious ‘ware of all categories (including all greyware), and gains a +2 on tests relating to obvious cyberware.
Cranial Casing The skull is a great place to stuff helpful little things! Truth be told, replacing the whole thing with a bionutrient holding case would be best, but X understands that not everyone is ready for that just yet. X gets a +2 on tests relating to Cyberware in the Headware category. However, they will never locate or install a Cortex Bomb of any type (active tests to remove one, or knowledge tests about them are fine).
Sinew of Steel Meat ages, decays, and dies. Better to get ahead of the curve, right? X gains a +2 on tests relating to Cyberware in the Bodyware category.
Actualized Actuators Full replacement is the quickest path to reliability and a real kind of efficiency. Loping off your arm isn’t easy, but it is worth it! X loves cyberlimbs, and gets a +2 on tests relating to cyberlimbs and their accessories.
No Judgment Though he finds it lesser in quality, X has found that many customers prefer the usage of soft-augs. He’s incorporated the necessary connections to service all varieties of transhuman! X gets a +2 on tests relating to Geneware or Bioware.
Sequence Matcher Extraordinaire X has facilities to match your DNA sequences, at least one in each city they operate in. If given access to your DNA sequence, X gets a +2 on tests relating to Cultured Bioware.
Quality Quartering X can provide the use of his network's medical setups. There is at least one in most major cities on the west coast of North America (i.e. Seattle, the SSC, Tir, CalFree). Use the Contact Favor Rating table, these favors are usually only Rating 1 if planned in well in advance, providing medical assistance is not very dangerous or expensive. Increase the rating for last minute requests (keep in mind X's Working Hours) or other serious complications. You can rent the room (Extended Service, use X's active pool for given formula) and optionally request a Doctor's presence. If you qualify for Private Life or are willing to have the patient enter alone (& sedated), use X's full Active pool as he will provide the service himself. If you would like one of his network's Doctors, use X's Active pool with a -2. Either way, requesting a Doctor requires paying for a Hits favor on top of the Extended Service cost. The rooms should also have basic high quality medical supples (Valkyrie Module, low availability drugs, trauma patches, GM discretion), and be perfectly sterile and clean (unless the runners ruin this) for the purposes of test modifiers.
