Summary

Jack da Rabbit wants dope to make crimson orchid with, runners decide to rob a free clinic for it and wreck a gaggle of Crimson Crush hired for security.

Background

Jack da Rabbit has acquired the red orchid pollen needed to manufacture crimson orchid thanks to the machinations of non-Haven runners, but he's out of dope to mix it with. He has orders coming in, but his usual supplier recently died of an overdose and so he has to figure out a way to get his hands on plenty of opiates, fast. Theft seems like the best way to do that.

The Meet

The runners are instructed to meet at the Hung Hooligan, a 'Weener controlled dive bar near the Downtown docks. Some gangers hanging around a burning barrel outside give Lanky a hard time, to which he responds by grabbing one of their arms and twisting it behind his back, threatening to break bones, but Jack runs out and shoos off his ganger buddies, scolding them for starting drek when he told them he'd have outsiders coming by for biz. Jack meets with the crew in the bar, hassles Datastream over the events of Medical Debt, and explains his needs while scarfing down a plate of buffalo soy-wings. He wants as much dope as the runners can get their hands on, and offers two routes to do it. Some cursory legwork on his part has found the location of a Disassemblers street doc/chop shop underneath a Downtown fish market, and the location of the Anarchist Black Cross's mobile clinic which is being set up ahead of Black Monday in an abandoned McHughs outside Bargain Basement. Datastream pushes hard to hit the anarchists, despite them offering free medical aid to the SINless, and the team agrees to the job.

The Plan

Datastream does some cursory Matrix on the Disassemblers hideout after being told by Jack that he heard they hired a mage from Mana to act as magical support, but drops that thread after realizing that he's not going to find info about Mana's tactics online, as the group is made up of all kinds of wiz gangers and street mages, you could get anything from a Halloweener combat mage to a Spectre's astral combat specialist. Looking into the ABC's hideout, he finds that it's an old McHugh's from a failed effort to revitalize part of Redmond decades ago, and finds that most locations from that era included gas dispersal systems as a security measure.

The crew drives down to the McHughs, located near the Bargain Basement area, to do some recon. Datastream notices a rigger piloting some stolen SecureSector drones, Lanky climbs a nearby room and spots some modern cameras installed on the building and a pair of armored Bulldogs in Crimson Crush colors watching over the place, and Mnemnosyne does some astral scouting to get a headcount of the hired ganger security and noncombatant personnel inside the place, also spotting a pair of caged cockatrices being used as security critters.

Unfortunately, Datastream's vehicle was spotted while approaching and the drones attack in an attempt to scare them off before they can finish their scouting.

The Run

Stick-n-Shock rounds pepper Datastream's car and a voice over a speaker tells them to leave now or they'd escalate. The runners don't leave. A bloody battle ensues, with Lanky jumping from rooftop to rooftop in the rain, Mnemosyne siccing a snakey beast spirit on the Crimson Crush and using gravity and mind magic spells to disable and put down an apparent leader, and Datastream trying to slaughter the rigger with biofeedback. The rigger survives the initial attack and switches to AR, but his RCC still ends up being bricked, depriving his formerly-swarmed drones of his programs and autosofts.

The rigger deploys the McHughs gas system, flooding the place with nausea gas after telling the gangers and noncombat personnel to mask up. Datastream has to speed away from a frag grenade a Crimson Crush member rolled under his car after it became clear the runners were going all in on lethal force, Lanky lobs a grenade of his own into the window of a van of gangers then slides down an old electrical pole to get to the ground level, and many gangers are devoured by the snake. A few gangers have their cybereyes bricked, Lanky enters the kitchen via a window and sees that the walk-in freezer has been padlocked shut. He assumes it's where the drugs are being stored, the rigger comes out and begs him to not ransack them like this, and he assures the man he's only after one thing.

Seeing no point in getting himself killed at this point, the rigger tosses him the key and Lanky steals the clinic's morphine supply. The runners load back in and peel out of there, but the rigger managed to recognize Datastream's persona and the surviving gangers are able to lay eyes on the un-disguised Mnemosyne. Lanky, however, had his identity thoroughly hidden by masks, voice warpers, and gas masks.

Realizing that they shouldn't try to smuggle a duffel bag full of opiates past the Redmond border, they call up their Johnson and ask if he has somewhere to drop the stuff off. He directs them to an abandoned Chuck E. Cheese he's claimed as a hangout, wires some money to a Halloweener buddy of his, and the goods are traded to a chiphead ganger for a trio of credsticks.

Aftermath

Crimson Orchid floods the streets in Halloweener territory, now that Jack has the supplies needed to create a massive batch of the stuff. Others in the Awakened drug market take notice, and are pissed.

The Crimson Crush backs out of guarding the ABC this month after suffering such brutal losses at the hands of the runners. Between hiring new security, moving locations to avoid being hit again, and trying to replenish their stock of painkillers, the Anarchist Black Cross is severely underfunded and will be unable to treat as many SINless as usual this Black Monday, barring further intervention.

Word spreads among the Crimson Crush of the decker and mage who were part of the recent slaughter of its members.
