Background

Born and raised on the Louisiana Bayou just outside New Orleans, Miss Camille Auclair grew up in a little shack on stilts that leaked when it rained.

She'd sit on the porch and do her homework on a bootleg edusoft, watching Pa rip parts off the latest junker to turn up in their yard. In the evenings, she'd help Ma light the candles that kept the corpselights from coming too close to the house. It was her awakening that changed things: Her mother had been a minor aspected sorceress, her father a spark. Camille was the real deal, a full-blown magician. And a strong one at that.

The offers came in, scholarships and free rides. Her folks would've had to been fools not to take it. And so a teenage Camille made her way into the Big Easy proper to attend Delgado Community College's thaumaturgical studies course with a path to an undergrad. Her mother's beliefs had already shaped her tradition, and her up-to-now lackluster formal education left her falling rapidly behind in the hermetic focused environment.

Always sad to see talent go to waste. She dropped out after a few semesters of failure and turned to other options. She fell into crime easy enough, plenty of room on the dark side for a good mage with even a little bit of formal training.

It was, however, when she was on a job that things went south. A simple enough task: Cook a couple watchers, steal some trinket. Until she stumbled across the cages full of people in the back room. She couldn't ignore their pleas for help, and what should have been an easy job became a major fight. The building burned, the slaves stumbled into the night never to be seen again, and Newt had stuck a thorn firmly in the side of an up-and-coming Zobop Mambo looking to stake her claim in the Big Easy.

Word got to her that she was a wanted woman, and she reached out to a few friends looking for a way out of town. A fixer in Seattle answered and gave her the escape she needed; on the condition she'd be willing to work for her keep.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

  • Mentor Spirit: Fire-Bringer: Known to Newt as Cernunnos, a manifestation of the Horned God, Fire-Bringer leads her toward a life of generosity and encourages her in her pursuits, and to do right even when it's hard.
  • Sensei: Newt has been taken in as a student of one Morgan Crawford, High Priestess of a Goddess Wiccan sect within Seattle.

Negative

  • Moderate Allergy, Uncommon (Matrix DNI): Newt suffers from a rare disorder that causes her brain to be incompatible with the form of neurological override used in DNI interfaces such as datajacks and trodes. This leaves her stuck using the matrix the old fashioned way.
  • Gremlins: Electronics don't like Newt very much. Things just seem to always go wrong.
  • Wanted: Newt pissed off the wrong crowd back in the Big Easy. No good deed goes unpunished. Mama Sanita, a Vodou Manbo associated with the Zobop and Tamanous metahuman trafficking operation in New Orleans, has placed a 25,000 nuyen bounty to have Newt brought to her.
