Seattle's NUMBER ONE source for INDEPENDENT journalism, bringing the people the UGLY TRUTH, 24/7!!! Screech is a ravenous, cannibal Gnawer- and worse- and honest media, hellbent on making a name for herself by sticking a claw in the Big 10's eye. She runs because... well, truth doesn't pay the bills, and her audience loves a pulpy crime story. With her knack for less-than-legal reporting and mysterious ability to command swarms of rats, she may just survive on the edge long enough to pull off the scoop of the decade.

Background

Cadence Conway: an indie news star, known for her daring, on-the-scene broadcasts and deep undercover exposes. She burst onto the scene with her coverage of corruption in Knight Errant juvenile court systems, purposely getting arrested to sneak recording gear into the jail. After that came her groundbreaking documentary on an ecofascist policlub in Snohomish, featuring a member of city council admitting to campaign finance fraud on tape. By then the big names were starting to notice, and Cadence got signed to Reverb News: a massively successful independent outfit that she had looked up to since she was a kid. She dropped out of college and realized her dream of becoming a full time media, but as her company shifted towards mass-market appeal the relationship between the two soured. Cadence leaned harder into fringe stories ignoring the objections of her editors, gradually whittling her audience down to a small group of NeoA diehards. Then, the intrepid reporter poked the bear.

While researching a string of missing persons in the Barrens, she stumbled into an enormous conspiracy: a Tamanous organ legging operation that reached all the way to the corporate council. This wasn't some petty, street level corruption like she was used to covering. This was a billion nuyen industry built off dead bodies and refurbished ware. Tamanous were smart, organized, ruthless, and known for making examples out of snitches. Cadence said publish the story, damn the risk! Reverb was decidedly less gung-ho. Suddenly at risk for potential retribution, the executives decided to save themselves by throwing their employee under the bus. They fed her location to a Tamanous hit squad, killing two birds with one stone, and while Cadence was walking home from the bar when she was grabbed by creatures straight out of a nightmare. They ripped her apart with their claws, real slow, and left her to bleed to death in an alley. Reverb replaced her time slot that night with a nice, inoffensive cooking show.

But Cadence survived, thanks to a commlink she'd managed to hide during the interrogation. She called an old friend from the Snohomish documentary, a fixer by the name of Bianka Dreschler, who managed to arrange an ambulance and save Cadence's life. Unfortunately, survival came at a cost. She had been infected with HMHVV, and over the course of an agonizing night she turned into a monstrous gnawer. Her skin turned pallid, flaky and scabbed, and her hair fell out in great big clumps. Razor sharp teeth burst through her gums, and her eyes misted over with white cataracts. For all intents and purposes Cadence was dead, and Reverb had already sized her all her assets. Left with no other choice she accepted Bianka's offer of work, becoming a shadowrunner until such time that she can get back on her feet. One thing's for sure: she's not done yet. Even as a member of the living dead, Cadence Conway will always get her story.
