Character Information

Summary

Formerly a small-time club DJ by the name of "Eel Juice", Valerie Heinkel's life was forever changed in a single, NovaCoke filled night with her partner. The two decided to open up a club, and they took out huge, questionably legal loans in order to do so. Their pride and joy, "Mudpit", collapsed in about six months. Whether this was due to the unflattering name or its owners complete lack of competency, none can say; Valerie insists on the former. Newly-unemployed and desperate to keep her fingers attached, Valerie took to the shadows under the name "Strobe". As a shadowrunner, she applies her lifelong passions of street racing, DIY mechanics, and lying to cops in order to pay off her debts. She might also be a little addicted to the adrenaline. And Novacoke.

Goals

Strobe's main goal is to pay off her and her partner Eliza's many, many debts. She's in deepest with "Good 'Ol" Samson, her Fixer. Her secondary goals include reviving her DJ career, winning street races, upgrading Eliza's cyberhand, and yerzing out her car as much as possible.

Background

Early Life

Valerie Heinkel was born on June 7th, 2057 to a family of Stuffer Shack franchise owners in the Seattle Metroplex. Valerie spent much of her early life stealing electronics and flunking out of school, quickly deciding that she had no interest in carrying on her parents' Stuffer Shack legacy. She wanted to make music, the louder and faster the better. Her growing rap sheet and gender transition strained her relationship with her parents, and at 17 she moved into a flophouse full of other aspiring musicians. She spent the next five years working odd jobs, getting into street racing, and building a moderate following as the technopunk DJ "Eel Juice". The name is derived from a former housemates' favorite hangover cure, a truly vile concoction made from blending vodka, synthetic fish, dill pickles, and hot sauce. Valerie swears by it to this day.

Musical Career

Valerie's loud, heavy synths and over-the-top performances made her a regular in Seattle's underground nightclub scene. She performed under the name "DJ Eel Juice" and used sketchy, DIY contraptions to aid in her live performances. Her crowning achievement is what she calls the "Zap Tube", a thoroughly scuffed drone attachment that creates a lightning-like trail in the air behind it. Although she never saw commercial success, her song "Analog Concussion" did get some limited play over Seattle's radio stations. Valerie believes this to be her worst song, and is incredibly mad that it's the only one people know her for. During her DJing career Valerie met her partner Eliza, a bartender at one of her favorite clubs. The two connected over their shared love of loud synths and overly tight leather pants, and they soon decided to take their relationship to the next level... by opening a club!

The Rise and Fall of Mudpit

The idea for Mudpit was born in a passionate night of Novacoke and how-to videos. The plan was perfect: Valerie would play the music and Eliza would sling the drinks. Sure, there were probably a few other things that went into running a club, but they could figure those out along the way. After an influx of cash that may or may not have come from a loan shark (the pair were VERY confident in their plan), Mudpit opened its doors for the first time to a resounding "meh". As it turns out, running a club is hard when you've inherited the business sense of two Stuffer Shack franchise owners. The complete lack of organization, bookkeeping, and adherence to health codes brought the club down in about six months. Mudpit left this world the way it came into it: in a haze of acrid smoke and poor life choices.

The tragic fall of Mudpit presented a problem for the couple, namely the massive debt that they had run up with Seattle's various crime organizations. In order to prevent getting tossed into the pacific with concrete around their ankles, Valerie needed a lot of money. Fast. Luckily, it turns out that the ability to drive really, really quickly is a high demand skill in the world of shadowrunning. It may have a higher body count than most street races, but Valerie believes that life is meant to be grabbed by the horns. If that means getting bucked off into a concrete divider every once in a while, so be it.

Personal Life

When she isn't paying off debt, Valerie spends time hanging out with her partner. Despite everything that's happened, the two have a pretty solid relationship. They make music, watch trid, and go to clubs whenever they can. Eliza is back to bartending, lacking any real skills that she could apply as a shadowrunner. They've both accepted the risk that comes with their professions; Valerie goes on life-threatening missions, and Eliza steals liquor from the bar to drink if she survives. Other than her partner, Valerie has a number of friends in Seattle's music and street racing scenes. She hasn't talked to her parents in four years, and she plans to keep it that way.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Fame (Online): Strobe enjoys moderate online fame under her DJ persona "Eel Juice", known for their wild performances and distinctive moray eel mask.

Gearhead: Strobe's lifelong fascination with street racing has taught her to pull 120% out of even the shittiest vehicles.

Juryrigger: Repairs are expensive. Strobe learned early that you can get surprisingly far with WD-40 and a roll of duct tape.

Low Light Vision

Negative

Dependent (Inconvenience): Strobe's paying off the debts of two people. Eliza's bartending brings in some money, but Strobe needs to shadowrun to make up the difference.

Addiction (Moderate) (Adrenaline): Whether she's running from the cops or stage diving into a crowd, Strobe lives for thrills.

Addiction (Moderate) (Novacoke): For a club DJ, a Novacoke addiction is practically part of the job.

Bad Credit: Strobe's failed club left her with nothing, and her awful impulse control ensures that people aren't keen to give her anything more.

Distinctive Style: Strobe's garish clothes, bleach-blonde perm, and LED tattoo leave quite an impression, for better or worse.

SINner (National) (UCAS)

Knowledge Skills

Area Knowledge: Seattle (Safe Houses): Strobe knows the best joyride routes around the city, and where to hide out when she's done.

Bars and Clubs (Seattle): Strobe's spent a good chunk of her life throwing up in the bathrooms of Seattle's underground dance clubs.

Club Music (Sinthcore): Strobe's an aficionado of obnoxiously loud music, and spends most of her free income on shows.

DIY: Who needs practical training when you have adhesive and elbow grease?

Drones: Strobe often mixes drones with her live performances, usually to the detriment of both. The Zap Tube was a real crowd pleaser until it started tazing people.

Appearance

Body

Strobe is an Elven woman in her mid 20's, standing at 5'7 and weighing about 200 pounds. She has pale, acne prone skin and a wild perm of bleach blonde hair. Her smile is big and lopsided, with a small gap in between her two front teeth. An LED tattoo of an electric eel winds from her right leg up to her right arm, with the head on her palm giving a big, razor-toothed smile. The tattoo shimmers with iridescent shades of purple, pink, and blue. Her hazel eyes shine with intensity, and she speaks with the wild confidence of someone used to hyping up a rowdy crowd. If nothing else, she knows how to make an impression.

Clothing

Strobe's favorite outfit consists of bubblegum pink platform boots; black leather pants; a teal and white mesh crop top; round sunglasses with gold frames and black lenses; and a toxic green armored jacket with a multi-colored triangle pattern.

Matrix Persona

Strobe's Matrix persona is her body with the head of a purple moray eel. Sometimes, she'll make the neck extend and wobble around for extra effect.
