Character Information
Summary
Some stories of the shadows are about heroes. Noble figures rising up out of the shadows to do great and heroic things.
And some stories of the shadows are about the people who have been cast down into them, forced by fortune or fate to delve into the darkest parts of the world as they try to survive. For Invictus, a name meaning 'Unconquered', it is a story about the slow and gradual degradation of someone cast out of the normal, every day, life and into the shadows - and just how deep into the darkness of his own soul he will go.

Background
Alexander Harker had it all. A successful law degree from MIT&T, an up and coming career as a corporate attack lawyer for Horizon's PR division, the flat in downtown, money, women, drugs, cars.
What else could someone ask for? Magically gifted from a young age and well on his way to leaning into the Speaker's Way, life seemed like it was on the up for a young Alexander Harker. There was only one problem - he got greedy.
What else could someone ask for when they already have the best of everything? More, clearly. And so he pushed, and pushed hard - and partied even harder. What was occasional drug use turned into a mild novacoke addiction; what was occasionally expensive trips or women turned into ended up almost flat broke. It was during those mid twenties years of excess that the Seducer, under the guise of the demoness, Lillith, came to Alex. In exchange for the excess he was already living, she promised him power to hold on to the life that was already starting to tumble out of his grasp.
Perhaps obviously, he accepted; and in doing so only added more momentum to the tailspin that was the trajectory of his life. It was not long after that Horizon fired him - he'd made one too many enemies and, despite his silver tongue, could not talk his way out of it. In an eyeblink, all the glitz and glamour of his life was gone. The rent was due, the car note was due, and the addiction was due - so clearly that one got paid first.
In a whirlwind month, the now down-and-out Harker found himself scraping together enough nuyen to get a place out in the Plastic Jungle of Redmond. But fate, it seems, is not without a sense of humor and after yet another bender down at one of the local bars, Harker was wandering himself back to the tiny shitbox of an apartment when he turned into the wrong alley. The blur that happened before him was so fast that he doesn't even particularly remember the details, only the vague daze of waking up the next night feeling sicker than he ever had before and with the strange and sudden cravings of a newly infected Vampire.
Out of cash, essence, and options, he did the only thing left to him. He called in what last few favors he had through his old Horizon networks, and got himself some work - his first few jobs in the shadows were entirely unglamourous, but every runner team has a need for someone to milk the johnson for more money, or talk their way past some security guard. And if they missed the sliiiiight panic in his eyes, well, he'd learned from the best courtrooms how to keep a cool head.
