Background
In 2074, Scandinavian Airlines cut their pre-flight checks for four of every five flights as a cost saving measure in order to stay competitive with the AAA Airlines. The measure was incredibly effective - the manager who made the plan saved the company millions, receiving a promotion and a big fat christmas bonus for his efforts.
In 2076, this inspection routine meant that the airline mechanic on duty missed that a bolt holding the left wing to the hull of the aircraft was due to be replaced. The bolt had been part of the routine inspections three years prior, but was cut as it was not critical to the wing staying attached to the plane. Which was true. Unfortunately, when the bolt detached from the plane during flight SK4432 as it was climbing to altitude, the bolt tumbled into the engine, jamming the turbine, and sending the plane careening into the sea. The mechanic on duty was fired and sentenced to ten years in prison for gross negligence and manslaughter. The manager's name did not come up in the court's ruling.
Among the passengers on the plane were 16 year old Ingvild Fredriksen and her parents, on their way to a holiday in Germany. When the left engine exploded, the debris penetrated the left side of the aircraft's hull, killing the father Harald instantly, and skewering Ingvild's left arm. Her mother, Marianne, either died in the impact or drowned - the autopsy was inconclusive. The trauma of this grenade-like explosion combined with the following airplane crash caused Ingvild's magical talents to awaken, and they were exceptionally powerful. So powerful, in fact, that despite seventeen fragments penetrating her torso and limbs.the blunt trauma from a hard airplane landing in water, and being starved of oxygen for four minutes, her magic kept her alive long enough for Emergency Response teams to arrive on site.
Unfortunately, that was a fact that would only become clear later. After the surgeons had performed life-saving cybersurgery, replacing failing organs, limbs, and installing brainware to help cope with the brain damage, almost smothering this magical flame in the process.
Ingvild, the sole survivor of the airplane crash, was left to fend for herself. She took to mercenary work in Europe, and developed a reputation for being very protective of her team members, even if they were just other paid muscle. She was nicknamed "Kara" by a german mercenary she worked with once, a corruption of the name of the Valkyrie Kára, and the name stuck. Eventually she saved up enough cash to have a friend of hers pull some strings with the Scandinavian Union's branch of the SIN registry, replacing the biometrics of her old SIN. She's come to UCAS to try and start over.
