Summary

Windfall has a disobedient debtor, and wants to solve that quick.

Background

Red Ledger has been expanding into new Redmond territory, and part of that effort is acquiring safehouses and outposts in border areas. They've had their eyes on a specific building for a while now, and when someone came along asking for a loan and hoping to open a pizza restaurant, the gang's leader decided to kill two birds with one stone. Get a new pizza restaurant, get a forever-grateful owner who has to pay you back and get a nice place for your minions to hang out. Win-win!

Not all has gone to plan, though...

The Meet

After some pre-meet shenanigans (including Reed stealing a guitar), the runners met with Windfall at a Red Ledger safehouse within their territory. There, the gang leader explained that she had previously made a deal with one Lee Owens to acquire a space for his very own pizza restaurant, now called Half a Slice. Apparently, Owens wasn't grateful enough to keep making his loan payments, though - so now, she wants him removed from the premises. Methods aren't a concern for her, nor is whether the man himself lives or dies. She just wants the property.

The runners manage to talk the offered price up a bit before agreeing, and then head off to do their job.

The Plan

Leveraging Fennec's Matrix skills, the runners do a little bit of legwork and discover some information on Half a Slice. Based on their info, they decide to go have a chat with the owner, and see if they can't avoid bloodshed first.

The Run

The team decides to head into the restaurant, intending to chat with the owner and inform him of the error of his ways. If that doesn't work, there's always gunfire. As they sit down and order, Fennec does a quick scan via the matrix and notices a number of cameras, plus a deck running silent on the second floor. Meanwhile, Reed takes a glance around the meat and picks out the various security personnel mentioned previously in the meat.

After marking the deck with a bit of Resonance trickery, Fennec sifts through its data and messages to discover a number of interesting tidbits. For one thing, the owner of the restaurant is incredibly passionate about his work, or at least seems to be, based on the tone of messages between him and this mysterious decker. He's so passionate that he's planted a small bomb in the kitchen, and plans to skedaddle and then detonate it if anyone comes in after him. For this reason, the runners shift on the fly, deciding instead to draw the owner out of his kitchen and talk to him in the dining room.

On the outside of the restaurant, Waveform notices a Ford Americar pull into the restaurant, but the owner pauses in getting out. After a few minutes, they appear to have a change of heart and begin to drive off. Fennec attempts to mark them, but to no avail; Waveform attempts to tail quietly, but they appear to notice and he breaks off the chase.

Meanwhile, on the inside, Reed fabricates a complaint about food poisoning and successfully gets Owens to come out into the dining room. He's reluctant to sit and talk, at first, but a well-palmed gun to the back from Mortis convinces him without immediately notifying security staff. A tense back-and-forth follows, wherein the runners explain Owens' situation to him, and pressure him about where he's getting the money to fund his security team. He eventually caves, and reveals that a cousin of his gave him the money on the condition that he continue being a problem for Red Ledger. This, he saw as his only choice, given that his restaurant wasn't making enough to pay back the loan's exorbitant interest rates.

Thoroughly intimidated, and convinced that the runners could end him in a second if he decided to fight back, Owens is eventually convinced to leave his restaurant behind in exchange for his life. His security team leaves as well, allowing the restaurant to eventually be claimed by Red Ledger.

Aftermath

Red Ledger now owns Half a Slice, which should make a great staging ground for further territorial expansion...

Game Quotes

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

Fennec - Y'know, he thought I was being altruistic, but really I just couldn't stand the idea of that Lee guy's pizzas disappearing from the world. I wanna try a supreme next time!

Waveform: Damn shame about the situation. Lee seemed like a rad guy, but you gotta make good on debts like that. Fennec was nice, and I do think she was the girl my grandpa was talking about driving the one time. Reed seemed like she had a drug problem, but was otherwise a smooth talker. Mortis? Mortis was killer rad. How many people do you know have 4 arms?

Reed

I got myself a guitar? And I got to help out? This is a good day for reed. Reed also happy when meet nice people, have a good day, eat food with money making. Yes yes, reed happy... hope he is happy too!
