Summary

Brilliant MCT Doctor wants nothing more than to fund her experiments, starts running the shadows to get some extra cash on the side - taking advantage of quick wits and some experience driving to get ahead of the competition.

Goals

• Earn money. Lots of money. So much money.
• Continue doing her experiments, on whatever and whoever she can get her mitts on.
• Rise through the ranks of MCT however she has to.
• Return to Australia.

Background

Lacey Montrose was originally just a bright student born to MCT SINners in Seattle. She rose through ordinary corporate schools, with ordinary corporate schoolmates, ordinary corporate parents who spent little time with her, and ordinary problems. It was all boring. So, so intensely boring. So she'd experiment instead of living that dull life - picking apart insects to see what was inside, examining them under microscopes. The 'samples' she collected grew in size and complexity, and advanced from invertebrates to fish, amphibians, birds... Her parents punished the behavior every chance they got, but the field of medicine drew her in too thoroughly - and their attempts at control only made her angry. When she hit high school, she started acting out - doing drugs, throwing parties, drinking hard, picking fights she couldn't win. Classic oppositional teen stuff. The real trouble, though, began when she decided that merely practicing medicine (as her parents did) was too little for her.

No, Lacey had to get into research. And she was a prodigy - naturally gifted in schooling, aided along by the gene treatments her parents had purchased for her. A few years of university brought her into a unique position - a school trip taken to Australia, under heavy guard from MCT security, as part of an internship program she'd managed to gain a foothold in. September of 2061 - a perfect time for a young mind to explore the continent of Australia. The natural dangers were bad enough.

Having half the expedition transformed in the first wave of SURGE, though - that was more than anyone was ready to see. A few died in the events that followed. Lacey, though - she just got a funny nickname and some weak adept powers. After all, her name was eerily similar to a certain lizard, and given that she had the right type of tail... and the fact that her SURGE expression had sapped her body's ability to react quickly, along with its ability to provide strength...

Being non-threatening helped her slide under the radar. She'd go on to be poked and prodded at, subjected to experiments constantly as she finished out her schooling. Her physiology - though interesting to MCT - was not unique enough to justify dissection. Lucky her! She got to dissect her peers instead after completing her doctorate. Maybe she would've been bothered by this in the past, but something about being SURGEd made her colder - and not just in the sense of one who was now cold blooded.

Lacey Montrose - Lacey Monitor - Lace Monitor - she became known for jumping into equipment around the world, either operating from an anthrodrone, rigger-enabled operating room, or very rarely in person. One of MCT's many scalpels, serving to carve a path forward in the sorts of research that made weak stomachs shudder. Some people might have wanted out. Some people might have broken under the pressure of being one mistake away from being the next one on the table.

Lacey, though? She did it for herself. She liked it. She was good at it. She was alive.

But the boon times waned - and slowly, those experiments slowed. Bit by bit, she's gotten bored, the scalpel's edge dulled. Sure, she's taken side jobs in site security, in piloting, in driving. None have the same spark, though.

She needs something interesting. A new experiment. Maybe running will be it. Maybe running will just give her the funds she needs to do what comes next.

For now - her handlers have given her a long leash. It remains to be seen if that leash will be yanked taut once more.

Narrative Significant Qualities

Positive

Gift of Knowledge (SURGE, Magic Sense, electroception): Lace has been given a great sense of the world around her by the storm that laid her low in Australia. She came out smarter, with a sixth (and seventh) sense for the world around her.

Negative

MCT SINner: She is an evil woman working for one of the most evil organizations in rhe world. Even worse - she wants to be there and views it as a method of driving her own success.

Slimebag Lizard: Animals bark as she walks by, her heavy tail makes her drag her feet, its scaled surface greasy to the touch (leaving a trail along walls as she walks past). She's unpleasant to be around on many levels. Her physical changes have also left her weaker.
