Summary

A serial killer is caught red-handed. It wasn't easy.

Background

Blackhawk has been looking for messed up Infected to hunt down and this has caused some ripples.

The Meet

Sandra, one of Blackhawk's fixers, calls him to inform that his search hasn't gone unnoticed and some Barrens gang might have a clue for him to follow up on. Eidolon is already at Devil Lake in the Monolith's headquarters when Blackhawk arrives. Sergeant Wrench is there to brief them on a string of serial killings that they've been tracking. Evidence suggests it's a Strain 1 Infected and exclusively targets mother-and-daughter combos. This seems to infuriate Blackhawk further, so the two accept a job.

The Plan

The plan is to check out the most recent hits - unfortunately they're in Downtown.

The Run

The two runners have to subcontract 4NG3L for Matrix legwork and assistance in getting into the Downtown apartments due to transponder key locks. With the Yakuza princess' aid, however, they manage to discover traces of Dread as well as a Renfield stash in the last victim's home. Blackhawk ensures it's all destroyed and attempts to astrally track the creator, but loses the trail. Due to being low on time before their window to sneak out of Downtown undetected closes, the team retreats and sleeps on their discoveries.

On the next morning, Wrench informs them he's been working all night on the intel the runners recovered and found a potential victim that the runners could stake out and see if she gets hit, using the mother and daughter as bait. It's not the most gracious of plans, but it's decided on. Eidolon sets up on top of a water tower while Blackhawk hides in a nearby suburban house's attic and Eidolon's Fly-Spy drone is watched by 4NG3L remotely, keeping tabs on the daughter's activities. The last girl was gaslit behind her mother's back by an online presence called Alucard who had offered the family plenty of money for off-the-books work. Suspecting this one is suffering the same fate, Blackhawk even trails her from home to school and back to ensure nobody nabs her on the way, but to no avail. Three agonizing days spent hiding in uncomfortable areas wears on both runners, but they eventually catch wind -- 4NG3L catches the daughter's commlink and finds out this 'Alucard' presence is planning to visit her tonight at her own home.

He's caught red-handed, having used sewers to move unseen and meets the girl in the building's garage. Blackhawk sneaks in effortlessly, the Fly-Spy acts as eyes and ears for 4NG3L to tag and target the dzoo-noo-qua and both Blackhawk and Eidolon open fire to try and bring the behemoth down. Despite the enchanter trying to utilize the young girl as a living shield and utilizing alchemical preparations, he's eventually capped in the head by a devastating called shot from a mile away and finished off by Blackhawk who gave Eidolon an opening for the ambush shot. Unfortunately, he's shown no gratitude as the girl runs away screaming, believing Blackhawk to be some bizarre monster as well.

Aftermath

Happy that the serial killer's been stopped and a photo capture of his Fear The Dark insignia-decorated belt provided to Wrench, he offers the victimized families' collected bounty to the assassin. Blackhawk does it nearly pro-bono. Getting to stop a horrible serial killer of women is a good day, but one can only wonder how horrible the girl's life might have been if she'd drank that first dose of Renfield...

Game Quotes

Player After Action Reports (AARs)

4NG3L: "Well, this one was a 'guardian Angel' run for me and I was glad to help. Now, I need to go and get a fly-spy drone and, for added kicks, take up rigging one of these days. Other than having to briefly make a physical appearance to help with some legwork and hotwire a door I couldn't hack through my usual means due to the construction of the lock, I mostly got to use a fly-spy to do recon and act as a glorified spotter for the snipers of the team. Somehow, I got alot of satisfaction out of this, despite having to stare at the utterly creepy piece of work that was the target. Boys, call on me anytime you need a decker."

Blackhawk: "Another one down... good. I can't stand any more of them running around. This world needs less of me... far less of them. I'm just sad there were so many before this I might have been able to save..."

Eidolon: "Apparently this gig was what some 'runners call 'hooding'. The mark was a serial killer, likely infected. I also got a much more direct understanding of the threat infected metahumans can pose, misaligned. Yanno, this entire run was like 'shadowrunning school', as I also learned that remaining motionless except to urinate for 72 hours is awful without very specialized 'ware I didn't yet have. That said, I think this run was one of my first almost completely 'good' deeds in my life, saving the life of a young girl and her mother that (as far as we are aware) are completely innocent of any sort of drek that should merit the attention of the darker elements. I am slightly miffed I missed a shot, but I'll go easy on myself for missing a hopped-up infected at 1,300 meters through walls after such a long sit. I'll be better equipped for long-stake outs soon. Blackhawk, you need another marksman on a hunt, feel free to let me know. 4NG3L, thanks for bein' our guardian angel and if you need a good shot for a gig, let me know. As always though, corpses cost extra... ha."
