Chip Truth: The Man Behind Samurai News
Charles "Chip" Takahashi grew up in the shadows of Seattle’s megacorporate sprawl, where he learned early that the truth was a rare and dangerous commodity. Inspired by his father’s mantra—"The corps might own the world, but they can’t own the truth"—Chip became a crusader for honesty in a world built on lies. After being expelled from a corporate university for hacking into the dean’s files to expose a bribery scandal, he founded Samurai News, an underground journalism network dedicated to exposing corporate malfeasance. The name “Chip Truth” became his moniker, a play on the popular slang for "a fact or honest statement," and a symbol of his mission to cut through the lies of the Sixth World.
Chip is an idealist at heart, driven by the belief that the truth can spark change, even in a world ruled by greed and corruption. His network, Samurai News, relies on a mix of whistleblowers, hackers, and shadowrunners to uncover secrets that corps would kill to keep buried. Chip’s preferred payment is stories—he trades in information, believing it to be the most valuable currency in the shadows. While his articles often mock corporate absurdities, his sharp wit and unflinching honesty have made him a trusted source for runners and SINless alike.
Despite his reputation, rumors swirl that Chip might be on a megacorp’s payroll. Some claim he’s a double agent for Horizon or EVO, while others suggest he’s being blackmailed by Aztechnology. Chip denies these accusations, but the truth is murky. While he’s never taken direct payment from a corp, he’s struck deals with sympathetic insiders to keep his network alive. Whether this makes him a hero or a hypocrite depends on who you ask, but one thing is certain: Chip walks a fine line between idealism and survival.
Chip’s charisma and passion make him a compelling figure, but his idealism can blind him to the harsh realities of the shadows. He’s a rare ally in a world of double-crosses, offering runners valuable intel in exchange for their help. Whether he’s hiring them to protect a whistleblower, investigate a scandal, or clear his name from a corporate frame job, Chip’s missions always come with risks—and rewards.
