Character Information
Summary
Kami Belfiore was five years old when the Vatican took her away.
Born into the slums of Venice, she lived a hard but loving life with her parents—until the day she awakened. A golden light flickered in her hands, marking her as one of the "blessed." Within hours, emissaries of the Church came for her, prying her from her mother’s arms and silencing her father’s protests. She was never to see them again.
Her fate lay within Project Psalms 37:17, a clandestine Vatican program that turned awakened children into assassins, spies, and enforcers of the Church’s will. Trained by the secretive Order of Saint Sylvester, Kami endured brutal combat drills, psychological conditioning, and excruciating magical transformations. By the time she turned eighteen, only four of the original twelve recruits had survived. The rest were deemed failures. The rest were "removed."
Kami became the perfect tool—until Seattle changed everything. Sent to assassinate journalist William Evans, a Vatican critic, she fell into a trap. But instead of killing her, William showed her kindness. He asked questions no one had ever asked her—about her dreams, her life, her desires. For the first time, Kami felt human. She felt free.
That freedom didn’t last. The Vatican sent another assassin to eliminate them both. William was killed, and Kami barely survived. Wounded and hunted, she vanished into the shadows of the Redmond Barrens.
Now calling herself Kamillion, she uses her shape-shifting magic to navigate the underworld as a shadowrunner. By night, she takes on dangerous jobs to survive. By day, she continues William’s work, exposing corruption through an anonymous blog. She knows the Vatican won’t stop hunting her—but for the first time in her life, she is no one's weapon but her own.
And she will never let them control her again.

Background
The bells of Venice tolled softly in the distance as Kami Belfiore turned five years old. She remembered the sound vividly because it was the last time she ever heard it while standing beside her parents. They lived in the crumbling slums on the edge of the city, tucked away from the glittering gondolas and marble palaces of the wealthy. Her father worked as a gondolier, though the tourists who could afford his service often stiffed him. Her mother stitched worn clothes in their cramped one-room apartment, humming lullabies to keep Kami distracted from the gnawing hunger that lingered every day.
Life was hard, but they had each other—until the day Kami awakened.
It started with a spark. She was playing with a cracked, hand-me-down doll when her hands suddenly lit up in a flickering, golden glow. Her parents froze, staring at her as if she were a saint. “Mio Dio,” her mother whispered, tears streaming down her face. “She’s awakened. A gift from God.”
The news traveled fast. The Church had long sought out awakened children—children like Kami—calling them “blessings” bestowed by the divine. They came for her within hours, emissaries in flowing robes who carried the authority of the Vatican. Her father stood in the doorway, blocking their entry. “You can’t take her,” he said, voice trembling but firm. “She’s just a little girl.”
“She is no longer yours to protect,” said one of the emissaries, his voice cold and resolute. “She is a gift to God and will serve Him as His chosen instrument.”
Kami’s mother clung to her, sobbing, but her small fingers were pried away. Her father’s protests were silenced with a swift strike of a stun baton. Her mother’s cries faded as she was carried through the cobblestone streets of Venice, her golden glow dimming under the shadow of the towering cathedral. She would never see her parents again.
Project Psalms 37:17
The Vatican called the program Project Psalms 37:17: “For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.” It was a secret initiative, far removed from the public face of the Church. Most believed the awakened were trained as clergy or healers, but the twelve children selected for Project Psalms had a darker purpose. The Vatican partnered with The Order of Saint Sylvester, its clandestine espionage division, to forge the awakened into assassins, spies, and infiltrators who would enforce the Church’s will in the shadows.
From the moment Kami entered the project, her life was no longer her own. Her days were consumed by grueling training. Combat drills began at sunrise and ended long after her body screamed for rest. She learned how to kill with knives, garrotes, and even her bare hands. When she failed, she was punished. When she succeeded, there was no praise—only a harder test waiting the next day.
The other children became her only companions, though none of them could afford true friendships. Kami kept her head down and worked harder than anyone else, but she often saw the others breaking under the pressure. By the time she turned ten, four of the original twelve had already been deemed “failures” and were “removed” from the project. Their faces haunted her dreams, but she knew better than to speak of them.
It wasn’t just physical training. The instructors drilled their teachings deep into the children’s minds: obedience to God, loyalty to the Church, and the belief that their power was a gift meant to purge heresy from the world. The hardest lessons came from their magical training. Kami was taught to mold her body using magic—to shift her appearance and voice, to become anyone. The pain of reshaping herself was excruciating at first, but she endured it, learning to suppress her screams. She became the perfect tool they wanted her to be.
By the time Kami turned eighteen, only four children remained. The rest had succumbed to the strain of their training, lost their sanity, or taken their own lives. The survivors were no longer children; they were weapons.
The Mission That Changed Everything
Kami’s sixth mission sent her to Seattle, deep in the heart of the sprawling Redmond Barrens. Her target was William Evans, a journalist and activist who had been leading protests against the Vatican’s influence and its hidden dealings. He was smart, resourceful, and dangerous. The Entity had declared him a threat to the Church’s reputation—and threats to the Church did not live long.
She arrived under the cover of night, her form altered to resemble a waitress who worked in the café William frequented. Everything was in place. The knife rested in her boot, and her mind was clear. This was just another mission.
What she didn’t anticipate was the trap.
William had suspected the Vatican would send someone, and when Kami slipped into the alley behind the café to confront him, she found herself staring down the barrel of a stun gun. She woke in a dimly lit room, bound to a chair. For the first time, she wasn’t in control. But William didn’t torture her or interrogate her. He treated her like a person, not a weapon. He asked her questions—not about her mission, but about her. Her name. Her life. Her dreams. Questions no one had ever asked her before.
At first, Kami resisted, refusing to speak. But days turned into weeks, and his kindness wore her down. She confessed her doubts about the Church, her hatred of being a tool, and her confusion about what it meant to truly live. For the first time in her life, she felt human. She felt… free.
But freedom was short-lived.
The Church never forgot its tools. When Kami and William were spotted together in Redmond, the Vatican sent another assassin to deal with the “rogue agent.” The attack came swift and merciless. William was killed in the streets, his blood pooling at Kami’s feet. The assassin, a former companion from Project Psalms, turned her blade on Kami next. They fought like demons, their blades flashing in the dim Seattle rain. Kami emerged victorious, but barely. Bleeding and broken, she fled into the shadows of the Barrens.
Becoming Kamillion
Kami spent weeks recovering in the slums of Redmond. The Vatican believed her dead, but she knew they wouldn’t forget her. She had no home to return to, no allies, and no resources—but she had her skills. She knew how to fight, how to survive, and how to disappear. Seattle’s underworld called to her, and she answered.
Kami took on the handle Kameleon, a nod to her magical ability to shift her appearance. She became a shadowrunner, taking jobs to survive and honing her craft on her own terms. The money wasn’t glamorous, but it was hers. For the first time in her life, she wasn’t someone else’s tool.
In her spare time, she revived The Daily Suggestion, a blog William had once used to expose corruption. She kept it anonymous, writing scathing exposés about the Vatican and other powerful organizations that preyed on the weak. It was her way of keeping his spirit alive—and of rediscovering her own humanity.
Though her new life was dangerous, Kameleon had finally found something she’d never had before: freedom. But the scars of her past lingered, and she knew the Vatican wouldn’t stop hunting her forever. Until that day came, she would keep running in the shadows, finding out what it meant to truly live.
