Summary

Zuri goes by the runner name KBC, or Krime Brick-Chan. She is a skilled decker and sometimes demolitionist. She takes her name from her brief stint as a model for Krime.

She has strong feelings about Krime because it is where her birth mother works.

She has recently relocated to Seattle to make a fresh start.

Background

Zuri, who is better known as Krime Brick-Chan, or KBC, was born in Euskal Herria – the South European nation founded by Basque separatists in 2029, and perhaps best known for being the home of the Krime corporation.

Krime specializes in weapons sized for trolls and orks, and prides itself on its metavariant workforce.

Metahuman pride is so great in the corporation that Zuri’s mother – a troll engineer for Krime who was married to a troll in their marketing department – paid the doctor who delivered her fraternal twin daughters a substantial fee to destroy the records that it was a twin birth, and one child was born human.  There could be no proof of her mother’s affair with a human man.  Her mother assumed that the unfortunate child would simply be killed.

A childless janitor at the hospital smuggled the unwanted child out, SINless.  This woman knew who the child’s actual mother was, and ultimately told Zuri the truth of it, as they went days without food, and lived on the streets, after the janitor lost her job in a round of budget cuts. Eventually the former janitor and her adopted child found work with a construction company.

Zuri used her burgeoning skills as a decker as a child – using stolen equipment – to research everything about her birth mother and sister (who grew up as a pampered corp kid).  She was obsessed with them.

She tracked down the electronic records of her mother’s affair.  A growing blackmail file.  Proof of her history.  Her birth father proved to be a low-ranking human officer with Petrovski Security, a subsidiary of MCT, who hold the national police contract.  He was investigating a missing persons case around a tort claim for a Krime product that may have had a fundamental design flaw.  Her mother had seduced him to quiet the investigation.  This case only provided more blackmail fuel.

When she was fourteen, she confronted her birth mother, and threatened to release all the information she had collected if her birth mother did not ‘make it right’ and give her a soft corporate life. She did not expect to be acknowledged as part of the family; she promised to keep her mother’s secret if she could just have a better life.

Her birth mother arranged (through her husband in marketing) for the young human woman to have a lucrative contract as a model in some of their advertisements.  Krime Brick-Chan.  She would pose with the various oversized weapons, and they looked even more enormous against her tiny frame.  A goldilocks meme.  One over-sized weapon after another, often side-by-side with a rather stunning troll holding the same weapon and proclaiming it ‘just right’.  The only weapon they jokingly showed as just right for her was the Krime Brick, which even she could manage.

The steady income and amusing job pacified her, but her birth mother recognized that she was a liability so long as she had the blackmail files. 

Her birth mother hired a couple local runners to steal all of Zuri’s data files, and kill her.  One of the runners – a young street sam – convinced the others to only fake her death. She went into hiding with them and built a reputation as a runner in Euskal Herria, staying off the radar by working mostly online.  It amused her to find every possible opportunity to brick weapons and devices on her runs, particularly Krime-issued weapons.

She and the sam had a fling for several years before that fell apart.

She noticed then, now 22, and with more free time than she’d had while happy with him - that her advertising persona – Krime Brick-Chan – had persisted on the matrix and gained a bit of a cult following.  A character that others would cosplay.  Lots of memes.  The images from the original campaign re-used in endless variations.  Comic.  Raunchy. Ridiculous.  But persistent.

It would not raise much suspicion for a runner anywhere to use that trope.  Particularly if she relocated.  Which sounded like a really good idea to her broken heart.

A cousin of a friend was working in the Seattle area.  He carried out all his business on-line.  Mr Incognito.  She connected with him, impressed him with some hacking projects, and he agreed to bring her into his small stable of runners in the Seattle area.

Negative

She always carries her original Krime brick with her – a bit of distinctive style that she can’t resist.  The brick represents everything she feels the world owes her.  Family.  Wealth. Identity.  Her relationship to the brick is a dysfunctional emotional attachment. She has bruises from her conversations with the brick (pie jesus domine...).  But she cannot let go of it. 

She is endlessly curious, chasing clues on the matrix (curiosity killed the cat). It can be a distraction when she tries to drive (accident prone).

She has some permanent damage to her nasal passages from an incident with an inhaled poison which left her with an impaired sense of smell.

The most noticeable things about her appearance are her bright red hair, bright smile, and the fact that she is usually carrying a Krime brick around with her. In her hand, or in a custom hip holster.

Clothing

She often wears armor, and/or a construction hat.

Matrix Persona

On the matrix, she appears like a woman made from brick.  Strong. Indomitable.  Serene.  I am the firewall, and the wall is strong as brick.

Her decking is aided by an agent who looks like a brick in a construction helmet.
