-- captured excerpt of the battle march of the Monolith
Background
A former Ukrainian SSU agent, Anna Shevchenko retired in 2070 and put her skills to use in MET-2000, a well-known mercenary organization. During a clandestine operation in the Russian Federation, Anna along with several others were captured by the GRU. While she managed to avoid giving away critical intelligence due to timely memory wipes and operational security, her involvement in 'espionage' and 'high treason' against Russia and her people was plenty of reason to imprison her for life in a high security prison facility. A long career of beta and alphaware augmentations were removed and sold on the market for reasonable profits and she was tossed as a scarred mess into a cell, the key tossed away.
MET-2000 was reeling for years after the Amazonian-Aztlan War and took a long time to organize their matters. During this buraucratic spring cleaning, they discovered that she was still unaccounted for and organized a rescue operation once her whereabouts were confirmed. 13 years later, Anna and her squadmates were both successfully extracted, more to cover the company's ass in case any of them began to collaborate for a shot at freedom. They outsourced the Matrix part of the job to Zero Day, a cybercombat-specialized PMC. The entire squad's trail, files and likeness were thoroughly purged from the Matrix, physical copies of her file at the prison burned.
Without her ware, however, and pushing forty soon enough, she was in no condition to return to service, not when the Amazonian War was fresh in the company's past and they couldn't afford rehabilitating a wreck from scratch. In a way, she'd been lucky; had she not been captured, she could've easily been one of the countless casualties MET-2000 suffered during the Amazonian war. Anna wandered elsewhere, thinking of picking up shadowrunning as a solo mercenary. There, no exact legislations existed. Even in her ruined body, maybe she could do something to earn a wage and start from scratch all over again. She was old. She wouldn't be obsolete.
By 2084 Bolt saw a kindred spirit in her when they met in a Touristville bar. A retired soldier and vagabond, not yet ready to put the rifle down. The two forged a strong bond and so Veles joined the ranks of the Monolith. A soldier was home in the barracks again, surrounded by brothers, not strangers. Civilian life was something she wasn't cut out for, anyway.
Assassination Attempt & Cyborg Procedure
The SSU called her back within months as a new lead was discovered regarding her failed operation. While she was obliging her duty to her country by going undercover in Latvia, she was run over in a triple car crash by remote controlled vehicles. The collision crushed over two thirds of her torso and bisected her from the chest down; had it not been for savior nanites she would've been dead on the spot. Even then, she was in critical condition and fading at a rapid rate. As the only survivor of the hit, the Ukrainian government commissioned the most affordable option to keep her alive and removed all the dying biomass.
Unwilling to invest even more money into getting her a cyborg shell, she was transported back to Seattle in the containment unit. With practically zero experience in the subject, the gang's technicians managed to scrounge up a barely functional junkyard frame for her to move around in and keep her mind a hair's breadth away from a psychotic breakdown. At first her psyche was 80% suppressed most of the time, keeping her from being able to process her traumatic condition but buying time for the techs to research cyborg maintenance more and possibly find a way to properly keep her stable. Her primary objective was all that mattered: Survival.
Reaching for Singularity
Upon further upgrades, over half of them entirely aimed at improving the lifelike nature of the cybernetic shell the CPU was housed in, Veles finally began feeling more like a real person. Touch sensors to feel her hands, olfactory scanners to smell cooked food, synthskin layers to give her a sense of organic existence. The few things about the shell that still are unmistakably fake are the sealed and heavily enforced port in the middle of her back that the CCU is extracted from and in front of bright lights the eyes are exposed to be cameras. Veles accrues a notoriety among the gangs of Seattle as a silent terminator, impossible for street thugs to stop and warranting many of them to fork over cash to hire skilled borg hunters. Stick & Shock rounds have also seen an upsurge after the Cutters spread word of a cyborg in the gang's ranks, making her invincibility rather short-lived.
A peculiar form of cyberpsychosis has shown its fangs, manifesting as concerning whispers in her head. Whether this is merely coincidental or a harrowing herald of what occurred to the gang's founder as well, Veles hears intrusive prayers and chants praising the original toxic idol and struggles to push them at bay. Blanking out at times, her unsuppressed cognition doesn't appear entirely free of glitches. An adult brain doesn't survive the transfer without scars, after all. Time will tell just how severe the side effects of extracting her brain from her body will be at such an age.
Goals
- Reach metastasis in her cyborg state
- Learn to sustain her weekly maintenance herself
- Climb the ranks and achieve the rank of Major
- Destroy operations of the vilest syndicates that others have nightmares about
- Retrieve the Gauss Rifle of the gang's founder
- Find out who attempted the hit on her and destroyed her organic body
Significant Things for Narrative
- Living Ghost (Blandness, Erased) - Veles does not exist in any official capacity. Less than SINless, there's no trace of her in any record. She could be anyone. She can be anyone.
- Monolithian (Thug Life, Candle In The Darkness) - Permanently clad in the colors of the Monolith, Veles is a sign of vigilante justice to the SINless. Ironclad dedication is a word that gets around.
- Personal Tech (Cyborg, Black Market Pipeline, Merc, Dealer Connection) - Hextech keeps her stable and builds her shell frames herself. As a result, Anna has significantly cheaper access to cyborg tech.

Russian Federation | They know someone escaped. They have vague characteristics: red hair, female human, middle-aged. Good luck finding that needle in a haystack. |
