Character Information
Summary
Geodesic is a hacker that arrived from the Manhattan sprawl in 2085. She's young, clearly malnourished, worryingly pale, and erratic and unstable in temperament. She has a strong fixation on mathematics and patterns of numbers, and is quite handy with a rifle (and also quite itchy to respond to any perceived threats). Despite her insistence that she has an implanted cyberdeck, she has absolutely no visible cyberware, very heavily suggesting the truth: she's a technomancer, and a damaged one at that. Still, she scrounges to survive, if not for her sake, than for her kid brother's, who she's raising and will protect to the death.
Goals
- Obtain personal safety for her and her brother
- Earn enough money so that her brother can live a comfortable, healthy adolescence without her going around committing crimes
- Figure out what the hell is wrong with her mind
Background
Born in the slums of New Jersey to smugglers working with the Mafia, Ellie Fletcher was lucky to live a relatively normal childhood. Her parents weren't around ALL that much, and her SIN was fake, but they could afford a decent life, and she could go to school. She was clearly a bright pupil, particularly loving mathematics, appreciating its universal nature and elegance from a young age. Her baby brother Oliver didn't change this much, as she didn't mind helping to care for him during her parents' excursions. What DID change things was her emergence. Suddenly, the Matrix as a whole was open to her, and with it, knowledge, information, truth. She was in awe, and she learned all she could, even teaching her brother what he would pay attention for using a "borrowed" commlink.
At the age of 12, however, her unknowing secret slipped. Two Mafia made men heard about Ellie's emergence, and knowing the money they could get for a fresh technomancer, decided to betray her parents for quick cash. They were caught in the house, and a fight resulted in Ellie watching her parents get gunned down in front of her eyes. She managed to buy time with her parents' Ruger 101 and flee on their Mustang with her baby brother, but without a SIN, with a dangerous secret, and a brother to protect, she had no choice but to beg, borrow, and steal on the streets. The trauma of this was too much, and her vulnerable young Resonance was infected by... something. Something warping, something sinister, that compelled her to make patterns, to rearrange. Something that made her situation that much worse.
Still, she managed to survive, doing low-level datatheft and other crime in the Manhattan sprawl, and keeping herself and her brother alive. A particularly bad gig in which she lost all control ruined her reputation on the East coast, however, and so she made another desperate move - a cross country trip to Seattle for new opportunity. Maybe she'll find the opportunity for her brother she feels she owes him, after her mistake orphaned them. Or maybe she'll lose herself to whatever's calling inside.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Dependent (Demanding)
- Her younger brother, Oliver Fletcher, has had to grow up faster than Ellie has realized. He barely remembers their parents, and sees Ellie like a mother figure, but with her frayed mind, he's had to learn to manage her breakdowns and paranoia, and even when she's mentally stable their living situation has been erratic. Despite Ellie's desire to keep him caught up and his own natural brightness, missing school has left him at a disadvantage educationally. He deeply enjoys Urban Brawl and is a huge fan of the New York Slashers. This interest extends to other violent and "seedy" pursuits - much to Ellie's chagrin, he thinks her work as a runner is a path to someday emulate. That is, if he doesn't make the Slashers.
Decaying Dissonance
- When Geodesic saw her parents gunned down in front of her, and had to endure the streets as a homeless child, the trauma broke her psyche. With that crack at such a formative age, something... sinister slipped in, warping her mind and deluding her perception. Her tastes became scrambled, her speech distorted, and most of all, her obsession with mathematics amplified. No longer an elegant description of the fundamentals of reality, her dissonance pushes her to treat numbers as sacred, see patterns where there shouldn't be any, and rearrange the world to fit them. Only a world that fits the patterns in her mind, one chained by the infinite certainty of formulae, would be ordered enough to feel safe in.

Bolt: It's hard not to feel sorry for this mess of a woman, but her possession of a gun and fierce hatred of the Mafia and similar groups makes Geodesic a useful tool for Bolt, too. Geodesic, for her part, just needs any work she can get.
