Summary

Sc4rl3tt is a technomancer in hiding, using a blend of Southern charm and polite refusal to answer direct questions to create uncertainty as to how she works in the Matrix.

Goals

To find somewhere she doesn't need to be anything but her. It's irksome to have to pick up and move when the villagers come out with their torches and pitchforks because you're wired differently. To deepen her connection with the Matrix and her abilities since it's the only place she's ever felt a 'high' or a 'low' and her hedonic treadmill didn't snap her back to 'normal' immediately after.

Background

“Scarlett, did you hear a thing I just said?”

The woman sighed slightly in irritation, not at the self-absorbed, pompous, flashy man that had been talking solidly for five minutes about nothing, but at her own slip up.  Slip ups put people on edge, made them suspicious and questiony.  Years of ‘teaching’ at her mother’s and sister’s hands had taught her that normalcy was the goal, and manners prized above all others.  She was a lady, a Southern lady full of traditions  Or that’s the lie she told herself everyday to make situations like this easier.  A heartbeat came and went before she smiled and tilted her head to the side slightly, fluttering her lashes every so slightly as she gazed up at the man who looked about to melt now.  

“Aw, sugar, you know how oft’n my attention wanders like a butterfly in a field a’daisies!  I do apologize, tell me again.”  Even in Atlanta, her soft, distinctly Southern plantation owner drawl made heads turn.  She had tried for years to shut it down but her brain wouldn’t let it go; it was the last bit of shine to the facade her mother had so expertly crafted for her - up until she’d “run away”.  

“It’s all right, Scarlett, it wasn’t important.  Just me waxing poetical about your leaving.  Damn shame - most people can do what you do don’t come with such a pretty face.”  He smiled, relaxed now and she returned his smile.  The world was more on balance now, and so she relaxed slightly the grip she had on the knife in her coat pocket.  

“You’re a gem in a mountain of horse dung, you know that?”  She looked out across the park they were walking through.  Scarlett.  She had hated it at first - a symbol from a book that most people hadn’t read or just didn’t understand.  If anyone, she had been raised to be a Melly.  Or a Misses O’Hara.  But it had stuck in way that nothing else had so she’d kept it through three cities, countless jobs, and a dozen contacts.

“You sure you have to go, hun?”  He looked a little heartbroken.  It might have been touching to anyone that wasn’t her.

“It’s time t’move on, ‘Lanta ain’t no place for someone like me.  ‘Sides, might be nice t’walk th’ world fore awhile.”

Narrative Significant Qualities

Sc4rl3tt has been diagnosed as many things in early childhood (before her parents found that even the best psychologists have loose lips), ranging from antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) to autism spectrum disorder. She lacks the ability to empathize and finds that most emotions (as others describe them) just don't exist in her brain. To cover for her lack, her mother instilled in to her from a very early age that she is a proper Southern Lady - sweet, kind, and charming to everyone she comes into contact with. Her condition is less apparent within the Matrix as she finds herself much more comfortable in a predictable world. When a therapist in her teens discovered she also suffers from synesthesia, he pushed her to develop a creative outlet as a means of relaxation, reflection, and social icebreakers - she carries a sketch pad and pencil wherever she goes now.

• Focused Concentration - a lot of time spent in the matrix has made sustaining basic forms a mild nuisance now

• Trust Data, not Lore - as someone who has a very hard time with feelings in general, she long ago decided that her gut wasn't "wired correctly" so she trusts data above everything else.

Negative

• Antipathy - an inability to feel most things has left her with no way to fully comprehend how to be an emotional, functional human that successfully interacts with other emotional, functional beings. She has a shiny veneer of charm to cover for her lack, but when questioned, the mask has a tendency to fall off and reveal the (almost) flat automaton underneath.
• SINner (National): CAS Citizen - Scarlett never burned her SIN; probably out of sentimentality.
• Insomnia - Sensory overload and a life of hiding have made sleep hard to come by.
• Reduced Taste - brain must have just run out of wires at some point when it was double and triple wiring all her other senses.

If it weren't for that shock of auburn hair and those luminescent green eyes, you'd never really remember her if you saw her on the street - which is how she likes it. While she is 'attractive' Sc4rl3tt goes to great lengths to downplay any distinctiveness (covering her hair, hiding behind sunglasses). Typically she dresses in black, favoring zip up hoodies, t-shirts with bands everyone has heard of, leggings, and tennis shoes that are at least 60 years out of date.

Matrix Persona

In the matrix, Sc4rl3tt lets her guard down slightly - she appears much as she does on the street, but her hair is a neon rainbow riot of color. Her matrix actions often appear as if they were parts of a symphony and she the conductor, and her sprites resemble fantastical beasts (she has a love of unicorns she will not admit to).
