Character Information
Summary
Sc4rl3tt is very enthusiastic about the word "hacker". She tends to run at the word "technomancer" even if she is a very closeted one. She weaves a mask born of gentle Southern breeding, a thick accent, a polite refusal to answer questions as to how she does what she does. This mask helps to hide her absolute inability to connect with people on any sort of level - she does not seem to be an issue with animals, sprites, code, devices, hosts, IC, or Crypt3ch.
Goals
To find somewhere she doesn't need to be anything but her. It's irksome to have to pick up and move when the villagers come out with their torches and pitchforks because you're wired differently.Crypt3ch has done wonders in accepting her for all that she is and Purkinje has helped her to see that she isn't alone as a technomancer and that the tree is many branching, though all paths lead to the root.
- To deepen her connection with the Matrix, the "hum", and her abilities since it's the only place she's ever felt a 'high' or a 'low' and her hedonic treadmill didn't snap her back to 'normal' immediately after.
- To learn to rely on her own abilities rather than using a crutch (sprites) in the Matrix.
- To learn to drive and not die.
- To mother something other than an Abrams Lobster.
Havenites Sc4rl3tt will not work with
- K9 - Sc4rl3tt doesn't like anyone that A) causes machinery to flip out if they are within a 50-yard radius, and B) actively searches out technomancers. The two did one job together, and Sc4rl3tt said to K9, "Bless your heart!" far too many times for it not to be understood there is a lot of bad blood there.
- Wild Star - Sc4rl3tt hates Lone Star with a fiery passion. Anyone working for them is the enemy; Sc4rl3tt would be much more likely to put a bullet in Wild Star's head than actually participate in a job with her.
- Hydro - Sc4rl3tt considers the idol to be far too emotional and completely unaware of the world around them. This is not someone Sc4rl3tt would trust to have her back.
- Lucky - They did one job together and that's all it took. Never again. And she won't forget that he took advantage of her while she was trying to hack for the team.
The Story So Far
On Being Thrown Aside by Corpsecs
[REDACTED] was the youngest of three girls born to Mr. and Mrs. [REDACTED]. She was raised between Amarillo, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia, as her father's business with LoneStar took him far and wide across the CAS. [REDACTED] did not develop like her sisters. She didn't talk, didn't make eye contact, had little ability to empathize, and seemed to have little concern with others around her. Before her parents learned that even the best psychologists have loose lips, [REDACTED] was diagnosed by several in early childhood, though the consensus of what was wrong with the girl varied greatly between them: some said it was antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) while others plased her on the autism spectrum disorder. To have a daughter with such an affliction was an affront to the sensibilities of her parents and their desire to progress upward in society. [REDACTED] was heavily coached from early childhood on how a "Proper Southern Lady" behaves.
These facts were often instilled painfully, either physically or emotionally. For a normal girl, this would have been torture. For [REDACTED] it was simply the way of life and how people treated each other.
[REDACTED] emerged quickly after Crash 2.0. It was not discovered until she was approximately thirteen by her parents when the young girl was found playing with a unicorn visible only in AR - she called the creature Llamrei and it seemed very bound to the girl. Close inspection by an "expert" revealed that this was a sprite and young [REDACTED] had indeed brought it forth into the world.
A lot of money was thrown at the "problem" of [REDACTED]. But you can't fix what isn't broken.
At the age of 16, her father had had enough; [REDACTED] had been caught hacking the LoneStar host he worked at. Her father was determined to have the girl killed so they could "be rid of the stain on the family treee". Her mother finally pleaded with her father to let [REDACTED] go, telling him that she would place [REDACTED] in the hands of 'relatives in Europe'. The woman instead drove [REDACTED] far out on to a country road, kicked her out of the car, and told the sixteen year old to 'get by on her own and forget she had a family, because how could they ever accept someone like her? Or even love something like her?'.
[REDACTED] still has her SIN from those days, biding her time until she can make it clear to them that she did fine without them. A kind stranger took pity on the teenager and brought her in to a group home; here is where [REDACTED] picked up the moniker 'Scarlett' - a Southern red head who was more stubborn than a mule and determined she would never go without again. Scarlett soon became Sc4rl3tt, an homage to her preferred method of keeping food in her stomach.
On Learning to Run Before She Could Walk
Sc4rl3tt spent the better part of a decade running all over the South. She took small jobs here and there, never staying long enough to have people get attached and never revealing the true nature of her abilities. She always carried a broken deck in those days, just in case there were questions. She spent enough time in and around Atlanta that she developed contacts with David Harsmen. It was here she pulled off her most public heist to date: a breach of LoneStar's private employee files which she posted everywhere she could find. A lot of powerful men were outed for the disgusting creatures they were: adulterers, leechers, pedophiles, sadists, and abusers of the innocent. LoneStar did manage to get a lid on things and blamed middle management for the breach. As a result of her hack, over 100 people lost their jobs. Her father was unfortunately unaffected by the dump publicly, though there are some at LoneStar who have connected the hack years before by Sc4rl3tt with this one and are holding the information over her father's head.
Eventually, the heat in Atlanta got to be too much for the girl. David Harsmen offered to introduce her to a runner community in Seattle where she could find some work if she wanted.
On Finding Roots
Sc4rl3tt was taken in to the organization known as ShadowHaven with little fuss based on the recommendation of David Harsmen. Here she found a much different culture than the one she was used to: a very accepting attitude of her kind. She remains unwilling to be as free with the information on the Haven as some are but there are a select few who know her secret. It was also in Seattle that she found the other part of her soul: Crypt3ch and his pet Abrams Lobster Charlie. The old decker is the only person that has ever made Sc4rl3tt really feel anything in her entire life and he has accepted her the way she is. The pair live in a house on Bell-Red Street with Charlie. Both Crypt3ch and Charlie indulge Sc4rl3tt in her love of drawing (the only good thing that ever came out of her dealings with therapists), her need to boop snoots, and her desire to sink deeper into the "Hum".
A chance encounter with a drone one sunny afternoon sent Sc4rl3tt on a quest that lasted weeks. It was through this quest Sc4rl3tt met Purkinje and was shown that she didn't have do this technomancer thing alone. It was a very moving experience for her and the second most emotionally impactful thing that has ever happened to the woman (the first being Crypt3ch admitting he was in love with her).
Narrative Significant Qualities
My Brain has a Lot of Crossed Wires (Antipathy + Trust Data, Not Lore + Reduced Taste)
Sc4rl3tt has an odd brain, even for a technomancer. She has great trouble connecting with people emotionally (animals not so much) and does not seem to care about the well-being of her fellow runners for the most part. There are exceptions to this rule: Crypt3ch and Purkinje. Because she lacks the ability to really have emotions unless she works at it, she also doesn't trust her gut one bit and depends on facts to get the job done. She also blames her odd brain and too many brain wires crossed for her synesthesia (she sees numbers and letters in colors) and reduced sense of taste (don't ever tell Crypt3ch she can't really taste his cooking, ok?).
Social Masks and the Darker Truth (High Charisma + Etiquette)
Whatever she may think of her mother and sisters, they did teach Sc4rl3tt how to be a 'proper Southern Belle' in spite of her 'condition'. She weaves together a pretty convincing mask when she wants to but there are points where she simply goes "blank" - her face has no expression, her eyes seem dead, she speaks in a very measured tone. This is the real Sc4rl3tt. She does tend to blame this on a "pain editor" she technically does not have.
Technomancy in All Its Closeted Glory
Sc4rl3tt has slipped away from the traditional route of sprite herding and has learned to start depending on herself, following a new path greatly aided by Purkinje and Crypt3ch. She is still very hush hush about being a techno, but hasn't run away just because a few select people know. Crypt3ch has taught her his own form of just bashing things and throwing data spikes (though hers will never match in ferocity to his, as he is 'The Greatests Spike Slinger in the Emerald City!'). Purkinje has introduced her to those that think like her and taught her she doesn't have to do this alone.

Appearance
Clothing
If it weren't for that shock of auburn hair and those luminescent green eyes, you'd never really remember her if you saw her on the street - which is how she likes it. While she is 'attractive' Sc4rl3tt goes to great lengths to downplay any distinctiveness (covering her hair, hiding behind sunglasses). Typically she dresses in black, favoring zip up hoodies, t-shirts with bands everyone has heard of, leggings, and tennis shoes that are at least 60 years out of date.
Matrix Persona
In the matrix, Sc4rl3tt lets her guard down slightly - she appears much as she does on the street, but her hair is a neon rainbow riot of color. Her complex forms often twist around in a multiude of colors, usually made up of individual numbers (a nod to her synthesia). Her sprites are often modeled on fantastical creatures - and Llamrei still pops up from time to time.
