Background Born blind, as a young man Cole Powell became fascinated by animals. He often boasted that he was going to be a zookeeper when he grew up, believing that cybereyes would cure his blindness when he was old enough to have them. Unfortunately, his family lost everything in the wake of the second crash, and they had to resort to scavenging for whatever they could get. Cole was lucky enough to awaken, but his outlook did not change. He revered animals, and found his mentor Shark. Shark taught him the ways of the predator, and how to survive. And importantly, taught him how to see through the eyes of others. Cole would move far out from the main city, to live in the Snohomish wilderness. Here is where he made a partnership with Rat. Rat would be allowed to scavenge food from him, and he would help. Life in the wilderness was hard, and sometimes he found he needed a little extra help to avoid starvation or death from exposure.
