Character Information
Summary
While at first Kotobuki Ui might seem like a harmless getaway driver and scout rigger, her dignified and phlegmatic character hides a skilled combat pilot and sniper whose experience working for the brutal Kenran-kai has hardened her to the worst parts of life in the Sixth World. She's doing better these days.
Goals
- Take care of (and probably upgrade) her helicopter Elizabeth
- Eat delicious sweets
- Have fun relationships with her friends
Background
Raised by her (racist, Japanese) single mother in the rough side of Tacoma, the young Ui Kotobuki grew up idolizing the Yakuza, who out of some sort of obligation seemed compelled to support her mom. Throughout her sheltered upbringing, the girl who would become Ojou saw only the best side of the Shotozumi, clean-cut and well-dressed men who helped keep her mother out of trouble. At a young age, Ui decided for herself that she would work to become a proud member of the Yakuza, no matter what it took.
What it took turned out to be some second-hand cyber and the untimely death of a helicopter pilot. Ui jumped at the chance to ferry a few nice, heavily-armed guys to a 'job' and back, and didn't even notice the weird way they looked at her dirty-blonde hair. Trying to turn this into a career however, showed her the slimy underbelly and casual bigotry of the Yakuza, and, disillusioned, she found that her background meant no other criminal organisation would touch her. Frustrated by this, she simply stole the helicopter she had flown before, easily evading the first efforts of the Yaks to capture her. She was drawn back into the fold however, by their threatening her mother. Told about a new job offer down in Puyallup, Ui accepted, and she's been happily flying for the Shotozumi-rengo since.
Admittedly, she hasn't been working directly for the Kenran-kai recently, mostly because they don't want the heat her bounty will bring on them, but this has given the newly-christened Ojou plenty of time to hang out with her new friends doing various crimes and enjoying 'girls' talk', and they've taught her a lot too, so she'll be even better when she gets back to working her regular job! Whenever that'll be. Personally, she's not in any hurry.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Special Modifications
Ojou's strange relationship with her equipment extends beyond sentimentality, she finds it easy to make her guns work a little harder or a little easier.
Made Woman (Shotozumi-rengo, Kenran-kai)
Being both female and half-Japanese, Ui faced difficulty entering any of the major Seattle syndicates, being both too much like a Yak and not enough like one. With the expansion of the Kenran-kai in terms of its diversity, Ui found her way in as an expert in 'deliveries'. After a minor mishap involving the accidental deaths of several members of the Seattle Mafia, she was forced out of that job, adopting the sobriquet 'Ojou' to run the shadows.
Emotional Attachment (AN 822)
Ojou makes her living out of her helicopter, and she loves her very much. While she loves all her friends and comrades, ultimately Elizabeth is her family, and she puts family first.
Wanted (¥35,000, Mafia)
Ojou once dropped a crate of illegal explosives onto an important mob deal while distracted by her commlink and driving high. This earned her a strict scolding from her superiors and a big chunky bounty from the Gianelli Family.
