Background
Savo is not a fun place to live in the Sixth World. The Bible Belt southern states equivalent of Finland, it's full of remote towns full of hicks that most people wouldn't really miss if they just disappeared into thin air. And yet, that's where Taru was born for better or for worse. Getting early on in trouble, she had a government stipend to go study but squandered it when she fell in love as a stupid nineteen-year old girl and ran off with her girlfriend into the forests of Central Finland. This didn't get the privilege of being a long-lasting relationship.
As avid hikers, the two of them found an ancient Winter War-era bunker and went looking inside, only to spy chitinous forms within. Stumbling into a nascent insect spirit nest, they tried to run for it but Taru's significant other was stabbed right through the gut with a spear-like forelimb. It was then, shoulder jammed against the front door and desperately trying to keep the things inside from coming out, holding her dying girlfriend in her arms and filled with panic that she heard a voice in her head. A voice offering help. Power. Salvation. The power to make a difference. It warned of a price, of a cost to this power, but Taru didn't listen. She took it in a heartbeat and with a jolt of ice cold chills down her spinal cord, Awakened her latent ability. This was later noted to be purely accidental and it's still unknown what about her genetics allowed her to Awaken.
Slashing those inside the bunker into pieces and healing her lover, Taru managed to save the day, but ever since that day her life's been nothing but a downwards spiral. She grew more powerful, but grew reliant on powerful foci sponsored by corporate financing to the insect spirit hunters she was a part of. She gained confidence, but was now all alone. She was no longer scared, but the emptiness in her drove to deeper and deeper addiction.
By the time her comrades found her on the floor of her airplane cabin, eyes bloodshot and a fistful of Aisa pills spilling from a bag, her dilated pupils signifying an obvious overdose, she got kicked out of the force. Her accolades hadn't gone anywhere, but an opioid addict like her wasn't trustworthy. Not feeling welcome in Finland anymore, she went to North America and twelve steps out of Seattle's airport she was mugged by the Crimson Crush, robbed of practically everything but her clothes. Suffering from extreme withdrawal, depression and with an empty apartment waiting for her, she had months of nothing ahead of her.
Nowadays, she's recovered from her Aisa addiction decently well and has been dry for over a year. She even founded a local private investigator firm in her name to keep herself occupied, her mind distracted. And yet, that just keeps her stagnant. Even now, the bargain she once made with a mysterious spiritual force haunts her, everything going wrong at the worst possible time. Her apartment needs fixing every other day, her car breaks down more often than not, buses leave just as she reaches the stop, it rains when she needs to go outside... she needs more than this. Which is why she's begun hitting side gigs. She has some experience hunting bugs, but that's a very narrow slice of the life she'll encounter in the shadows. Maybe she'll get over her past. Maybe she'll realize what exactly haunts her every waking hour.
Or maybe she gets hired again and gets to go around the world, everything paid for in advance and fighting on the front lines of bug hunting. One can dream, right?
Significant Things for Narrative
- Prototype Magician - Entirely accidental, Taru was meant to be a designer baby with as little side effects as possible while still integrating the latest discoveries in bioware research. While not all too successful, she Awakened later, which has allowed her to leverage her abilities further than before thanks to her augmentations.
- Trust Fund - Due to her Awakening as a designer child, she's been given some special treatment from the Finnish government. She has a lifelong pension as long as she stops by for the occasional DNA sample and medical check-up, even when living overseas. Only, that's not gonna last long if they find out she's been doing crime!
- Day Job - She's an investigator. Specialized in magical cases, Wychking's title is linked directly to hustling spirits, strongarming the Awakened and finding answers. Murders, hauntings, you name it.
- Betel Addiction - Her corpgum comes in cigarettes, not chewing gum, but it's all the same since she's a habitual smoker of the stuff. It's like crack... but at least it doesn't get any worse.
