Summary
Summary
A subtle and discrete street-mage, who prefers to finesse his way past obstacles rather than blast a path of destruction wide enough for even a blood-blind Wolverines' corp-cop to follow. He dresses with the old adage "geek-the-mage" in mind. With his strong build, military style bearing and street-samurai threads, he's the last person anyone would assume to be a spell-slinging mage. Or so he hopes.
An English-speaking Quebecois.  Shooter and Brawler. Capable of mixing it up in the Astral and the Meat. Wryly self-depreciating. Competent All-Rounder without "shining" (I see what you did there) at anything in particular. Shine's "secret" relationship with the runner Zenith is something that far more runners are aware of (or at least suspect) than either of them are comfortable with.

Goals
Goals
Stay Alive. Become an Initiate. Get Rich. Stay Alive. Keep Juliette Happy. And Keep the Fireworks to a Minimum.
Stay Alive. Find out what happened to Frakk Up her life. Never, ever, let anyone find out how she earned a living while crossing North America. Try to re-capture something resembling a "normal" life. Keep Zenith safe. Be a good friend/surrogate mom to Zenith's daughter Harriot.

Alignment
Black Trenchcoat: She's lived the Corporate life and lived the street. She's not a black-hat, but her outlook is morally ambiguous at best. Hooding a rarity. Or so she likes to tell herself. The truth is that Shine followed her parents into CrashCart because she saw herself as one of the "good guys". While she strives hard to wear the black hat she thinks she needs to survive, the simple truth is that she has a altruistic streak wider than Puget Sound.<gallery mode="packed" widths="240" heights="360">

Background
Background
One of the youngest children of a Templar in service to the Lord Protector of the United Kingdom, Mush's father sought asylum for himself and his three litters of children following the Lord Protector's defeat at the hands of the Pendragon. With little more than the clothes on his back and his arcane skills, Mush's father supported his brood by running the Shadow's of Montreal until the night he, predictably, left on a 'run and never came home.
A former, lifelong citizen and employee of EVO, Monique is Parisian by birth but moved to Quebec with her parents at an early age,  The IV-conceived middle daughter of a Nurse and a radiographer; Monique took full-time employment with Crash Cart fresh out of high school. She was a true believer in the Corp and it's message, having been employed first as an ambulance cleaner outside of high school hours and then signing up as security for one of the nicer Crash Cart clinics in Montreal. She handled door and emergency room security for the better part of three years before she spontaneously awakened at the age of 19. She played on her newly discovered abilities until she wrangled herself a seat as a member of the security team on one of the clinic's mobile recovery units shortly before her 21st birthday.

Mush's own mother worked two, sometimes three jobs at a time to raise the large family on her own, leaving little time for familial niceties. Mush was largely raised by his older sisters, who, also predictably, soon fell in with the local gang scene in the district of Queens where they lived. Mush, as SINless as anyone in his family, was unable to access public education and instead educated largely by the local community until the day his mother spotted an advertisement on the local matrix concerning a Black Magician looking for students.
There she stayed until about nine months into 2080. What at first looked like an ordinary retrieval run for a Ares citizen on a restricted research site soon turned into a major drek fest, with more than a dozen of the on-site Ares personnel flat-lining before she even arrived. Her crew drove straight into what looked to be a blue-on-blue gunfight between multiple Ares factions. Monique provided cover for her team to stabilise and extract as many Crash Cart clients as they could, only for her ambulance to be taken down hard by something -or someone- she didn't even see. She barely remembers fragments of the next few hours - her burning ambulance. Several dead crewmates. Something monstrous and impossible silhouetted against the flames. She's not even sure which of her team-mates dragged her out of the clusterfuck and into a sewage culvert before going back to rescue the others and -presumably- getting themselves geeked in the process.

Juliette Burma made it clear she was looking for clients, rather than dependents. Wealthy clients. But Mush's mother pulled what few strings she had in the Ork community and managed to gain the Black Magician's attention long enough to introduce her son as a potential "indentured servant." Tickled by the idea of her own Orkish slave, Juliette accepted the ten year old (and therefore young adult) ork into her "inner circle" of narcissists, sociopaths and psychotics. Mush doesn't often think of the torments  -physical and psychological- he endured at the hands of that little coven of rich hedonists, but he remains grateful for the life lessons imparted to him there. Indeed, Mush soon took on all manner of "odd-jobs" in the Shadows of Manhatten and Montreal in order to pay his way for his tuition, all the more so as he grew older. Until, one night, the heat back East became just a little too much to cope with.
When she woke up, her CrashCart wristband was dead and legally, so was she. Her co-workers refused to take her calls, her distraught mothers cursed her for making a crank-call and then minutes later her corp-sponsored com-link account was cut dead. Nothing worked. Not even the fob that would allow her access to her apartment building. Going home proved to be nearly the biggest -and last- mistake she ever made. THEY had been waiting for her. Whoever -they- were. When she finally staggered away into the Montreal barrens, she had a couple of rounds in her right thigh to add to her flash burns and concussion from the firefight the night before.

Juliette suggested a little working-vacation in Seattle. And so, armed with a couple of names from Juliette's infamous little black book, Mush finds himself in the most shadowed city in North America. Friendless, and looking for work.
Monique -finally- made it out of the city, hitching her way across North America with private citizens, truckers, and even stowing away on cargo freight. The first time one of her benefactors tried to accept payment in kind she was still too shell-shocked, lonely and desperate to turn him down. When he tossed a near-empty credstick her way afterwards, she wept harder than she had for years. But she still took the money. Thereafter, she turned tricks where she could - and only when truly desperate- and slowly made her way to Seattle over the course of half a year.

That's where she met Clyde, the trog taxi-driver who introduced her to the world of the Shadows via the refuge at Solace. Clyde, tripping out of his mind and claiming he could see her aura, convinced Monique that the shadows of Seattle were her chance to "shine". She turned her last trick to pay for her shiny new (refurbished) Ingram Smartgun. Now she's got the chance of a new life and an entirely different means of living, and she plans to make the most of it.

Narrative Significant Qualities
Narrative Significant Qualities
*Sensei: Juliette Burns (Skill Group: Summoning): One of the most notorious Black Magicians in North America. The only thing this vivacious and sadistic young woman enjoys more than the high life is recruiting more Black Magician "thralls" into her circle and wrecking lives. She uses Mush as mercilessly as she does any of her other toys. In return, she binds him to her service with the promise of further training and by knowing all his dirty little secrets - including the various unsavoury services he's performed on her behalf.
*Agile Defender: Shine relies on instinct and agility rather than determination and focus when acting defensively.
*Focused Concentration 1: When you rely on Manipulation magic in social circles, it's pays to not be sweating and distracted by the strain of maintaining too many spells.
*Adept - The Warrior's Way: Much to her families disappointment, Monique chose to direct her talents towards combat and security rather than healing.
*Mentor Spirit (Moon): Taking the Moon as Mush's mentor spirit was Juliette's idea. The Moon is a helpful spirit with regards to manipulation and illusions. As for making Mush somewhat less argumentative and conflict averse? Well, Juliette does like to keep her "allies" especially biddable. The less they argue back the better.
*Big Regret (Former Joygirl): Driven by desperation, Monique sold her body to strangers. She's not entirely aware of what haunts her more: selling herself for so little, or selling herself at all.
*Bad Credit: "Why should I take a risk on you, chummer? You're new to this Sprawl. I don't know you. Neither does anyone else."
*Favoured (Health Care Professionals): Monique has always felt most at home in the company of health-care professionals, ranging from unpaid stay-at-home carers to the highest paid neurosurgeons and researchers.
*Designated Omega: Years of dependency on an narcissistic, manipulative, alpha-female sensei like Juliette Burns do not a leader make.
*Martial Artist (Fireteam): Shine learned the basics of the CrashCart version of Fireteam some years ago, and has begun to perfect her practice in recent weeks.
*Spirit Bane (Beast Spirits): Juliette had Mush attempt to summon a Beast Spirit once. Just to see what would happen. The resultant spirit-rampage made Juliette -very- angry. To this day, Mush doesn't like to think too much about what she did to the poor spirit that dared to wreck her pearl-white linen couch.
*Mentor Spirit: Spider (Alt): After her recent experiences with Bugs, Shine has attracted the attention of Spider, with whom she has formed an alliance while keeping in mind the the ancient adage: "The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. No more. No Less". Despite her cynicism towards her new mentor spirit, Spider and Shine are well matched. Both can be entirely ruthless  towards their enemies, and they both absolutely loathe things not going according to plan.
*Big Regret: Mush receives Magical Instruction from Juliette Burns in return for years of indentured servitude involving  activities both mundane and ghastly including: housework, errand-running, bag-holding, invasions of privacy, gathering blackmail material, actual blackmail, destroying previously stable family units and even delivering her social rivals to Termanous  agents and Benraku parlours.
*Social Stress - Monique occasionally encounters individuals who remind her of clients from her old life. She knows the chances of any of these individuals actually being a former John or Jane are vanishingly small, but seeing them makes her palms sweat.
*The Goat - Monique has a haunted, wary look about her. She's forever checking out her six. And her 3. And her 9, the ceiling and even the floor. She doesn't know what she's looking for, but she's concerned that one day she'll see it. Her wariness sets people a little on edge. Especially when making first impressions.
*Wanted - Shine's run during Fortune Favoured went very, very wrong. She's now wanted by both the Salish-Shidhe Council and Seattle Council for 50,000 Nuyen each for robbing the Seattle Museum. However, this may be less than a token gesture. The "Wanted" is attached to little more than a description of a human sized female with a sword wearing Sleeping Tiger and carrying a Katana. No astral signature, DNA or biometrics were left at the scene.

Run History
Run History
2081: Shine arrives in Seattle with barely anything to her name beyond a duffle bag and an Ingram SMG. Clyde sets her up with Alessa P. who in turn sets her up with Shadowhaven and Solace. In her first few weeks as a Runner, she makes an enemy of the local Yakuza by twice hitting a Benraku parlour - once for a Johnson, and again on a hooding run to free the dolls within. Feeling the heat, she wisely decides to lay low for most of the rest of the year, performing simple courier and bootlegging runs for Alessa to stay under the radar.
2082: February marks Shine's return to Shadowhaven with the extraction of Brodie J from his ganger captors on behalf of his former lover Cecelia Cross. A simple milk run goes wrong a few days later when a fellow runner's near-dependent is apparently abducted from a college frat party. Finally, Shine hits the big time with an assault on a Bug Hive in the company of some of the Haven's biggest names. March does not begin well for Shine, with a failed run in Greece (followed by a pilgrimage to the Acropolis) and a second, more successful run, that leaves her heavily indebted to Warboss and wanted by both Seattle and the Salish Shidhe Council. April see's Shine move into the home of Zenith in order to protect her fellow runner's daughter from a kidnap/abduction plot. She falls in love with Zenith during this time and the two begin a secretive affair. May 2082: This month started with Harriot's birthday party, with Shine and Vip3r helping Zenith ensure the party was safe and a happy day for his daughter, but she's furious when he almost gets himself killed chasing a lead concerning his ex-wife. Later that month, she helps Vip3r rescue one of her parents. Summer of 2082 is largely spent in Germany, where Harriot is enjoying an internship with Saeder Krupp. Shine keeps herself busy with counter-intelligence work and making sure Harriot stays safe.

Though it is claimed that the patients in question are "volunteers" she hasn't been able to confirm this to her satisfaction. Nevertheless, she retains many friends within the group, particularly among the street people and low-level runners who once relied upon her for medical care. Her relations with senior members of the organisation remain tense.

General Description and Clothing
A short, agile young woman with dark, collar length hair. Shine has an intense, haunted look in her eyes and a disconcerting habit of constantly checking her three o'clock, her nine, her six and even her ceiling in a calm, professional manner than non-the-less attracts attention and arouses suspicion in SINers and can put other Runners on Edge (The Goat Quality). Her movements are preternaturally swift, but far too smooth and graceful to be simply the result of wired reflexes. When she crosses a room swiftly, it's like observing a ballerina cross the stage - but with a doubled frame rate.

Clothing
Monique has two tattoos One of a rose surrounded by thorns on the right side of her neck and a larger tattoo, twin to the first, on the right side of her body at the waistline. Prior to the events of Athens Initiation she wore her old CrashCart ID tags on a black leather thong around her neck. The only jewellery that's always on her person is an item she acquired in early March 2082: a thin silver-platinum band on her right ring finger engraved with an onyx and garnet black widow spider.
A short, well-groomed orc with slicked back hair shaved close to the scalp at the sides. He avoids wearing anything that might obvoiusly mark him as a mage, and instead favours pseudo-street-medieval and street-combat styling in his day to day clothing. He does, however, make a point of dressing for the occasion even if his clothes have an "off-the-rack" look made all the more evident by how his shirts and jackets barely stretch to accomodate his wide shoulders. His neatty trimmed beadr is barely long enough to qualify as more than stubble, and is a slightly lighter, more reddish shade of brown that the hair upon his head. Given his slightly angled ears, intense gaze, toned muscles and well defined jaw, Mush is lucky enough to find himself relatively attractive by the standards of almost all the common metatypes.

She's good looking in an unremarkable sort of way, but hardly a head-turner were it not for her noticeably cautious behaviours. While her original "runner" clothes are rather grimy, somewhat malodourous and in need of a wash, she still keeps them from a sense of sentimentality. Shine's present runner gear ranges from customised, re-purposed SWAT armour to clothing by Zoe and even the latest in tactical stealth suits. When she needs to remain low-key and blend into the street, she still wears the same grimy armoured leathers and ballistic armour that kept her alive in her early runs, yet her day to day wear ranges from jogger bottom and t-shirts at home, to ten thousand nuyen ball gowns and dresses. Shine is all but addicted to clothes shopping, and since breaking into semi-prime runner territory, has developed a wardrobe so extensive that she rarely needs to wear the same outfit more than once a season. The sole exceptions are her armoured clothing, for which she has an appropriate set for any social or tactical occasion.

Shines personal, physical hygiene is simply flawless. Even in her grimiest, earliest days as a runner and street-dweller she took pains to maintain her appearance.  Now that's got some spare nuyen, she simply finds it easier to retain her freshly washed, shiny hair and impeccably clean fingernails and skin. While she continues to wear little in the way of day-to-day make-up save for some foundation and black eye-liner, she's content to spent considerably more on her cosmetics and is no longer reliant on risky, boot-leg street-corner cosmetic purchases. Shine likes to dye her hair -platinum blue when she can afford her favourite brand and shade; something she can now afford far more regularly than before. Yet her professionalism is such that she'll return her hair to it's natural, darker colour before heading out on a run and usually keeps a bottle of dye-remover in her duffel.

Mush is remarkably well spoken given his short tusks, which still mildly affect his speech and tone despite their modest, discrete size. He's been plagued in the past by accusations that he trims his tusks to keep them deliberately small and subtle, yet a closer look reveals they are well kept and polished almost to a gleam.

Matrix Persona
A pile of green goop with a huge mouth and two beady eyes modelled on the "Schlock Mercenary" character from the late 20th century. Carries a menacing, over-sized plasma cannon that emits an even more menacing "ThrrrrruuuuuuMMMMM" noise when activated.
A generic gray female outline.

Summary

An English-speaking Quebecois. Shooter and Brawler. Capable of mixing it up in the Astral and the Meat. Wryly self-depreciating. Competent All-Rounder without "shining" (I see what you did there) at anything in particular. Shine's "secret" relationship with the runner Zenith is something that far more runners are aware of (or at least suspect) than either of them are comfortable with.

Goals

While she strives hard to wear the black hat she thinks she needs to survive, the simple truth is that she has a altruistic streak wider than Puget Sound.

Background

 • Agile Defender: Shine relies on instinct and agility rather than determination and focus when acting defensively.
 • Adept - The Warrior's Way: Much to her families disappointment, Monique chose to direct her talents towards combat and security rather than healing.
 • Big Regret (Former Joygirl): Driven by desperation, Monique sold her body to strangers. She's not entirely aware of what haunts her more: selling herself for so little, or selling herself at all.
 • Favoured (Health Care Professionals): Monique has always felt most at home in the company of health-care professionals, ranging from unpaid stay-at-home carers to the highest paid neurosurgeons and researchers.
 • Martial Artist (Fireteam): Shine learned the basics of the CrashCart version of Fireteam some years ago, and has begun to perfect her practice in recent weeks.
 • Mentor Spirit: Spider (Alt): After her recent experiences with Bugs, Shine has attracted the attention of Spider, with whom she has formed an alliance while keeping in mind the the ancient adage: "The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. No more. No Less". Despite her cynicism towards her new mentor spirit, Spider and Shine are well matched. Both can be entirely ruthless towards their enemies, and they both absolutely loathe things not going according to plan.
 • Social Stress - Monique occasionally encounters individuals who remind her of clients from her old life. She knows the chances of any of these individuals actually being a former John or Jane are vanishingly small, but seeing them makes her palms sweat.
 • The Goat - Monique has a haunted, wary look about her. She's forever checking out her six. And her 3. And her 9, the ceiling and even the floor. She doesn't know what she's looking for, but she's concerned that one day she'll see it. Her wariness sets people a little on edge. Especially when making first impressions.
 • Wanted - Shine's run during Fortune Favoured went very, very wrong.

Organizations

Note: Shine has left Solace in February 2082 when it became apparent that the location was being used to provide "nutrition" to the infected in the form of terminally ill patients.

1 1 Hit: Fit and well, Emotional State, Awakened. Initiated. 2 Hits: No standard cyberware, unusual dark streaks in aura indicative of metaplanar contact. If she is carrying her Katana it will be revealed as a weapon foci. The spider-ring worn on her right finger is a qi foci.
3 3 Hits: No alphaware, sense if Essence and Magic is higher or lower than your own. 4 Hits: No betaware, Magic 6, Essence 6. Identify if any adept powers are active - YES. Noticeably there is a faint shimmer of protective magic around her at all times. The brightness of her aura suggests that several other adept powers are also exerting an effect upon her physical and astral form.
6 No genetech present.

3 A grainy still-image taken from a news cast of a street-fight in Montreal. Shine's head, shoulders and fore-arms are barely in view while she uses a drag-handle to pull a wounded runner in Ancient's colours out of shot with one hand. The other hand being engaged in spraying short bursts from an Ingram Smart-gun. A crash-cart patch is clearly visible on her combat jump-suit and body armour.
6 An obituary in an internal Horizon news-letter for operations in Montreal, lamenting the "heroic sacrifice" of Monique De Rochelle and her entire Crash-Cart team during a disturbance inside an Ares Facility in Montreal. 1 "Shine? Yeah I know Shine. She's a Shadowhaven razor-girl with a thing for extractions and combat medicine. She's solid in a fight, but does everything she can to avoid things getting loud. Has a weird accent. Think she's French? Maybe from Quebec?"
3 "Shine showed up in early 2081. She worked a few jobs, then laid low doing street drek for the better part of a year. Now she's back from the street leagues. She's had a lot of successes, and couple not-so-successes, but she's a thinking-Js' runner with a clear head and gradually working her way up to Prime Runner territory."
5 "Shine's tight with five other runners: Babylon, Black Samurai, Vip3r, Absolute Zero and Zenith. Can't say just how friendly they are, but she's been known to socialise with 'em outside of work."

SINs

Julie Bellamy, UCAS Citizen (Fake SIN and all licenses rating 4): Adept, Bodyguard, Concealed Carry, Driving, Firearms, Foci, Weapons.

Monica Ramsey UCAS Citizen (Fake SIN and all licenses rating 6): Adept, Driving, Emergency Medical Technician, Firearms, Weapons.

*Note:* "Monica Ramsey" is Shine's "normal life" SIN, not routinely used for Running, but to maintain as normal a "day-to-day" life as possible. Only Vip3r and Zenith are aware that Shine uses the Monica Ramsey pseudonym. Any Runner with whom Shine has worked who has taken the opportunity to examine Shine's PAN in AR will be aware that she uses the "Julie Bellamy" identify during Runs.

Appearance

14th March 2082: A News report concerning the bombing of Seattle Museum, a multiple Knight Errant car-chase through the streets of Downtown and Renton. Multiple Knight Errant and Museum Security fatalities, alongside a number of bystanders killed by exploding vehicles. None of the reports mention Shine by street name, SIN name (Julia Bellamy) or even by description, but a wounded, slender, slight, willowy woman with Sleeping Tiger and wearing a ballistic mask was captured on several sensor feeds during the run.
