Background
Backstory
An ill Omen: Jubei was born to human parents in JIS. When an oni was born to the family they were exiled to Yomi island. With great effort they were able to smuggle themselves out of Yomi Island and into Seattle. Jubei's father lost everything and to make ends meet worked a small business indebted to the Yakuza (Shotozumi Rengo). He took his son's birth as a sign of ill omen even suspecting his wife of infidelity. When Jubei manifested magic, his family never took it as a sign of good luck but as further ill omens. Jubei's father expected him to live a clean life, by applying to white collared wage-mage jobs in various japanocorps. Unfortunately he was turned down at every job interview, not because of his lack of skills but simply because of his looks and his haughty attitude and to much of his woe, joined up with the Kenran-Kai of the Shotozumi Rengo.
Jubei served the Yakuza for sometime, learning and developing his magical skills to serve himself and only himself. He was drawn to a wandering black mage who forged his magic on the anvil of the philosophy "self above all else". Jubei was brash and despite being a lowly metahuman in the eyes of the Yakuza, dared to date Yuki, the human daughter of Boss Tanaka of the Shotozumi. When Tanaka's anger crossed all limits, he arranged for a faux job to get Jubei killed while spreading rumors that he had betrayed his oath to the Yakuza. Jubei was forced to go underground and when he tried to reach out Yuki, she had disappeared, nowhere to be found. Scared of his betrayal, even his parents left Seattle and went back to Japan.
Yokai is quite the selfish asshole and dabbles in forbidden magic. Instead of picking up Shinto values that most of Japanese mages do, he sought out a witch and practicing magic that benefits himself above all. He never really has cared for anyone in his life except himself. For in a world of cutthroats, why should he be a saint? This is why its a mystery, even to himself why, despite his many wrong life choices, the "Slayer of Dragons" chose to guide him over the seas to safety. Why he chooses to appear as a great samurai and aid in his criminal acts. Perhaps, there is honor among thieves. Perhaps, there is more to Jubei's destiny.
To Hell and Back: Always wanting to get more powerful, Yokai chose the path of black magic early in his life. Taking the metaphorical shortcut to power. Yokai once made a deal with a demon. The demon had tasked him with snaring people into contracts, in which their very soul would become enslaved to the demon. Thus, Yokai became an agent of demonic forces, much to the displeasure of the voice of reason, his mentor, Dragonslayer. Little, did Yokai know that in doing so he himself had sold his soul. In exchange for heightened understanding of magic, his flesh was branded by a mystical mark of the demon. Eventually, he realized what deep drek he is in, and then the demon's emissary arrived for the 3rd time to command Yokai for more tasks, Dragonslayer intervened and cleaved the demon in two. Its mangled corpse opened a portal to its master's realm, a hellish, dark swamp realm. Yokai, under the guidance of Dragonslayer made his way to an ominous temple, battles hordes of demons along the way, finally ending in a massive battle between him and the Master's three high priests. In the end Yokai was victorious, barely alive and standing, but victorious. At the altar, he destroyed the phylactery that bound his flesh and soul to this demonic realm. His brand faded away. Yokai had apparently redeemed his soul, or has he. The Master will not be pleased and he may have made an enemy more powerful than he can comprehend. He later found out that he was on the verge of selling his soul to a Master Shedim who planned on turning him into a Shedim shaman. Unknown to Yokai, the Master now plots against him. It was at that moment that Yokai's greatest nemesis was decided: The Shedim!
Homecoming: Yokai wakes up at night to the sound of thunder. Yuki is sleeping beside him, the neon lights of the cheap motel flicker as the events of the past couple of days flash by. He came back to Kyoto at the behest of Fuyu, a friend of Yuki who claimed that Yuki was sent to JIS after Yokai was framed to keep her away from him. He even managed to track down his parents just to see his funeral picture hanging from the wall, his father's arm replaced by cyber and his mother using a walking stick. The yakuza are a cruel people.
He goes to Fuyu's apartment, only to step inside a cold apartment and witness the eviscerated corpse of Fufu, clutching onto a Shinto scroll, her gruesome killer, feasting on her flesh. It was a banshee adept, easily vanquished. But no, there is something more, something darker. SHEDIM! The puzzle pieces fit together and lead Yokai to and old place, buried deep in his memory, a shrine now corrupted. The master shedim and his servants await him as the Yakuza fight them in vain. Yokai takes no sides, especially when they maimed his parents...shouldn't have touched his family. Yokai was in the foulest of moods and all you crossed him, turned to ash.
The woods catch fire as a bleeding Yokai fights the dreaded "Master", a F14 Master Shedim. Arrogance can lead to slip ups and a Black mage knows when to capitalize on them. The shedim's spirit form and flesh form all turned to dust as a blast of mana sears the forest. Screams echo in the distance from the shrine. People, strung up as sacrifice to the shedim. No more, Yokai will set them free and rescue Yuki, his one true love....Back in bed, his ears ring with his water spirit's words "Her body belongs to someone else now. Lover or not, he will keep an eye on her." But for now he cherishes her warmth.
A Dragon with a Deal: Yokai took Yuki and went back to Seattle to deal with Boss Iwamoto Tanaka for his atrocities. Yokai crippled him but let him live as a reminder of how he ordered Yokai's parents to be crippled. Yet the story was not over. He woke up one day to a blazing inferno, in the home he was living in with Yuki was nowhere to be found. After escaping the burning motel he was approached by a nameless oni from the Naheka-gumi who gave him an offer he could not refuse. Kill Tanaka and save his wife, the Naheka will take over the operations and Yokai will be brought back into the fold of the Yakuza. Thus began his final fight against Boss Tanaka who has been killed and taken over the Master Shedim, Yokai's nemesis. The high rise tower shook as Yokai finally slew the grotesque monster, managing to save the life of his fiancee. Together they went off to the Kingdom of Hawaii where they married and now serve the Dragon Naheka. He was Yakuza once again. Thus Yokai bid farewell to Seattle for now.
Rebirth: "Serve only your own desires. Fuel your ambitions with the suffering of others. There is no we, there is only I. These were the tenets of my beliefs, the paradigm that powered my magic powers. I was an angry and selfish man. I abandoned my parents and I abandoned the woman I loved. But sometimes life shows you the error of your ways in such a way that it shakes you to your very foundations. I have seen the face of terrible evil, demons that feed on greed and demons that feed on souls and I had fought them, initially only to gain power, then for revenge and then...it became almost my duty, to do what I can to guard this fragile realm, to follow the dragonslayer's path. I will slay the coiling serpents of evil in my heart and cleanse my soul. I will become a better person. Black Magic claims only to serve your body, but I can see now, if the soul is strong enough, the body no matter how frail, can be reborn, day after day." Yokai's vision ends with the image of a dead bonsai tree, bathed in light and coming to life. It resides in the same Shinto temple, that his wedding took place.
Hero of Ork Underground: Having mostly resigned from the shadows, Yokai returns one more time to save the ork underground from a bug crisis. A bug hive being spotted by a fellow oni and shadowrunner Nora Inu. Him and her banded together gathering support from the Skraacha, Sons of Sauron, Trog runners, Ex-firewatch and even Outcast infected living in the under-underbelly of the OU. Even a fellow elven runner, Witchblade joined in on the action. A massive militia war was raged against the bugs and broadcasted through hacked channels to show that the residents of OU can hold their own. They don't need the help of a AAA corp nor Neo-PD. Other shadowrunner residents of OU like Cyber Knight fought in the battle as well. As the bug queen lay dead. Two onis, a marginalized metavariant from another nation, saved the day. Seeing that the OU has found a new devil to watch over it, the Devil or Ork Underground resigned from spotlight once more, returning back to his wife and life as a Naheka-rengo pillar doing his cross border operations from KoHawaii to Seattle.
