Style Guide

I would say my style varies from run to run. I'm still working on figuring out how I like to run Shadowrun games and my particular style, as I'm still rather new to this.

Game Themes/Styles

This will be expanded on over time. I literally just made this. I've done two runs, so you see two categories lol.

  • Sixth World Absurdity - Sometimes people with power want strange things and runners are the key. Other times, the world itself is just not what you'd expect. These runs have a comedic and more lighthearted slant, though that's not to say they are consequence free.
  • Serious, Dark - Likely grim events and a dark atmosphere. There are plenty of nasty things in this setting, and sometimes they get explored.

How I run things

  • I will try to pick characters that will be alright with the run, though I get that can vary. Notably, if you're signing up to try to subvert/work against the run, that's perfectly fine as well. I'd just like to know in advance. If people want to decline the job once they get more details, that's fine.
  • I'm alright with players working against the goals of the J, though communicate with me and hopefully don't do things that make it actively unfun for the rest.
  • I do think actions should have consequences. I won't try to just set up in impossible situations, but I'll admit I'm still learning, so my gauge might be rough. If I mess up on my end though, I'll try to either retcon/subtly adjust things to work it out. On the player's end, I'll try to create consequences to your actions, if only so they feel real, with the weight they deserve.

Seelie Fae Notes

I've been running a fae related plotline and adding in fae NPCs. I collated a few tips about running Fae from the Shadowrun sources that I've read. This is not an exhaustive list, and I am not a member of thematics, so take all of this with a grain of salt. Also, the most important thing to remember is to break these rules whenever you feel like it. These are general guidelines about how Fae of the Seelie Court interact with others. They absolutely break these rules though, whenever they feel the urge or benefit from them. Never be afraid to change things up. For more detail, I'd recommend checking out Court of Shadows. I'm only vaguely paraphrasing some tidbits from it. I may add more in bits in the future.

  • Fae are prideful. Honor and social status is a big thing, and slighting others can sometimes have consquences.
  • That doesn't mean you shouldn't slight people. Prideful people disdain other people's pride. You've earned it. Most other people are inflating their ego and you should show your disdain.
  • Approach all with respect, but without courtesy, unless they really earn it. It's the opposite of how we do things normally. A bit of verbal sparring is expected and not doing it makes you look like a passive idiot.
  • When you insult someone, as the above, mix compliments with insults. Backhanded compliments and veiled attacks. They all happen constantly, unless they actually like you.
  • Secrets and plots are the way of things. Speaking openly, freely, and directly is for again, idiots. Plots kept in secret and performed to maximum effect raise your stature. Hide your intentions, your goals, and really everything. Indirect action, trickery, and guile is the name of the game.
  • The Seelie don't have a currency, beyond favors, obligation, and similar. Things are rarely offered out of kindness. Almost everything has a price, but its not always bad to be in debt to a Fae, and not all prices are terrible. Though sometimes they are.
  • Getting the attention of Fae as a mortal can vary in difficulty dramatically. They can have different tastes for all of that. Some are enamored, some thing of them like animals or pets, for some it's just mild curiosity. It varies.
  • Fae Can Lie! As the book says, lies are disgraceful, shameful, and show weakness. Fae still lie quite often. What's bad is getting caught in it.
  • When you catch someone out for doing something bad, shameful, etc. Like lying for example. You generally don't point out the weakness, unless the gain is worthy of it. The slights are kept in mind and exploited, but not brought up generally. Unless they are.
  • Even with all of this, Fae are people. They differ in all sorts of ways, and again, don't follow this list as an absolute rule. This is just the culture of the Seelie Court and those involved with it. Always feel free to ignore this. Make the NPC's actual people.
