Character Information
Summary
Red Ribbon is a young elf lady who takes care of her cars and drones rather better than she does herself. She's slow to trust and loves to do her background research. Shadowrunning is her way of exerting self-determination - she hates feeling manipulated.
Ongoing Goals
- Get people to trust her again.
- Kill True Sulla. Forever.
- Grow a spine, stand up for what she wants to believe in, and hopefully earn Bunny Hop's respect and trust.
- Make more friends. They all keep disappearing or moving away.
- Buy a VTOL.
Help Farraday's Clinic recoup.Gone, reduced to atoms. She'll work with S3I in the same spirit.
- Pay back Arma Remington.
- Gain Von Neumann's trust so she can get this microbomb taken out of her head.
- Somehow, get Saint to stop trying to kill her.
Resolved Goals
Buy something nice to drive around town with. A van is good, but it doesn't have the right flash.A cherry-red Shin-Hyung and a Mack Hellhound do quite nicely.
Spend more time with Paz, and keep her safe. The FLR ex-girlfriend has retired to Cara'sir, but Ribbon hasn't had enough of the runner life just yet.
Make a name for herself so people think twice about crossing her. Fame, public awareness... whatever it takes.Goddammit, not like that!
Make goddamn sure Red Ledger never figures out who she is.Drek.
Get to know Sizzles better.Where is the man? She hasn't heard from him in weeks.
Smooth things over with the Finnigan Family.I suppose you could say that ship has sailed.
Background
Holly Spade was born to a pair of middle-weight criminals in the Redmond Barrens, in a body distinctly wrong for her. The life they provided would only last for a few years before they abandoned her to the streets, unwilling to properly care for her. She was too young to properly understand what was happening, and now barely remembers their faces. She was left with scarcely anything - her name, a near-depleted credchip she couild scrounge from the wreckage, and her wits. There are a hundred thousand ways for such a child to go wrong in Seattle.
Holly was taken in by an agent of the local Chrome Crash gang, who at first deceived her as to his proper affiliation. Growing up on the streets had thoroughly quelled any naivete that Holly had left, but the (to her) luxuries he offered tempted her beyond compare, calling back on long-faded memories of an infancy in greater comfort. As she grew, Holly found herself a reasonably good actor, and with a particular knack for drone operation. Her new "guardian" furnished her growth in these areas with small trinkets - a fly-spy, a simple commlink. A nice place to stay. Providing for her transition from masculine to feminine. In return, of course, she was asked for gratitude for these favors, usually involving the quiet surveillance of others or the planting of small, anonymous packages in secluded places.
Holly never questioned what her guardian was doing with the information she gathered - at least not openly. At some point, she learned he worked for a gang, and met some of its members, but didn't dig further. To her, what she had was worth whatever ignorance he required, and whenever she showed signs of doubt regarding this view, she was gently reminded of everything she owed to her guardian. The decent life she'd been given was slowly turned into a cage that she willingly remained within.
This might have continued for much longer, but she would one day be asked to take an unusually long watch, and thus witnessed the true purpose of her operation - as part of one of the many deadly, shadowy conflicts that rage across Seattle. She was gathering intelligence to be used in lethal ambushes against a rival gang, Red Ledger and their associates - many of whom were innocent family members or friends. Even this, though, was not enough to shift Ribbon from her cushy little prison, and so she became part and parcel to atrocity, tempted and threatened equally by stability and by the people and power her guardian commanded.
Eventually, inevitably, the retaliation came, on a day when Holly was returning to meet with her "guardian" some few days after one of these follow-ups. She found the apartment where he hid shot to hell, and entered to catch the his last moments, dying from gunshot wounds.
The moment that her erstwhile "guardian" bled out was the moment that her reality came crashing down upon her. Though those who knew of her relationship with the man were dead by virtue of his goals, his impact wasn't nearly enough to eliminate anyone who might possibly hold a grudge against her should the truth come out. Suddenly, she was alone - alone and afraid, and so she booked it, again scrounging whatever she could from the safehouse he provided and swearing never to be so willingly blind again. This turned out to be fortunate - her guardian's associated gang's main safehouse was also hit in the same night. So it was that Ribbon began running for herself, rather than anyone else. Throughout the aftermath, her negative emotions surrounding the event focused overwhelmingly on herself, as she felt viscerally uncomfortable with turning even posthumous blame on the man who put her in the aforementioned situation, despite his direct hand in the matter.
The residual guilt from what she was involved in and the acute awareness of how willing she was for some time eats away at her in the early hours of the morning. Not just for being involved in killing, of course - but also for her willful, even eager ignorance of what was truly going on. Her self-perception of her refusal to question her circumstances more makes her concerned about her own intuition. She tries to drive it away with work and adrenaline - there's always tuning to be done on one of her drones, or a paint job to be touched up, or someone to be researched before an upcoming run, often with the help of Psyche. Oh - and her coat just has to be impeccable, even though nobody sees it when she's cooped up in her van. On runs, she finds that riding far closer to the edge than comfortable takes the clenching feeling out of her stomach, at least for a while.
Narrative Significant Qualities
Positive
Profiler - Red Ribbon's past makes her unnerved when she can't do her research beforehand. Her difficulty adapting to social improvisation often comes across as an odd inability to trust what others are saying, or in her own ability to make good decisions.
Biocompatibility & Black Market Pipeline (Cyberware) - Red Ribbon is in the market for cyberware and sure knows where to get it. She doesn't really seem to be thinking about how much she's going to shred her essence.
Steely-Eyed Wheelman, Stunt Driver, Gearhead, Vehicle Empathy, Sense of Direction - Redmond highways are good teachers, especially when the go-gangs come around. If you try to tussle with Ribbon on the tarmac, you're in for a nasty surprise.
Subtle Pilot (Air & Groundcraft), Aptitude (Sneaking) - With experience comes wisdom. You know what's better than shooting first? Not having to shoot at all. Discretion is key.
Reverberant - Why is it that every time something weird happens in the matrix, it ends up being a techno? At least there are patterns you can spot.
Trustworthy - Even if you hate her, or think what she's done is horrific... Ribbon is a consummate professional, and has held a team together more than once.
Negative
Big Regret - Red Ribbon deeply regrets both how she allowed herself to facilitate indiscriminate murder, even if it was for the benefit of someone who helped take care of her. Moreover, she regrets intentionally turning a blind eye to anything that made her suspicious, lured by the relative comfort she lived in. There's also the more material matter of playing a notable part in some Seattle gang conflicts that comes along with this - and there are surely those who would love to see a bullet in her if they were to connect the dots.
Distinctive Style - Red Ribbon's runner clothing is covered in stylish, angular red accents that match her hair, also dyed a deep red. The same accents are present on the pop-up gun of her MCT-Nissan Rotodrone. Even dressed more casually, she always has a noticeable number of bright red accents to her style, through accessories or otherwise.
Poor Self Control (Thrill Seeker) - Red Ribbon likes to take risks in the heat of combat. The adrenaline is exhilarating - not much more to say about that.
Addiction (Mild, Psyche), Addiction (Mild, Overdrive), Addiction (Mild, Hotsim) - It's a thrill to feel so active and pumped up in hotsim! Though maybe her behavior is getting a little compulsive, when it comes to that...

1 | Red Ribbon often offers advice on vehicle and drone purchases on hobbyist forums, and has apparently helped a few people out with repairs. She seems to know half the mechanics that live in town, referring to them with some familiarity. |
3 | She's a member of a small matrix community dedicated to learning and practicing Cantonese. She doesn't seem very good at it, from her posts. |
6 | There's an old, buried forum thread from years ago wherein a resident of Redmond expresses frustration at someone who's constantly flying a fly-spy around their windows, seemingly for fun. The resident apparently had to chase some 'scrawny elf chick' off the street. The area where this apparently took place was a pretty violent one, too. Further research may reveal that Chrome Crash and Red Ledger were notable causes of this violence. |

5 | "Surprised you haven't heard about it by now, to be honest. Her name's bad to bring up in the shadows right now - apparently she got up to some real fragged up drek in her ganger days. Hits on homeless shelters during gang wars, is what I heard, with only ashes left behind. Now, I have heard she's trying to be better, and she did help do that clinic in Avondale a good turn. Still, I'd keep judgement careful." |

Appearance
Red Ribbon is tall, even for an elf, with straight-backed posture and an expression that usually looks mildly worried. She has lightly freckled fair skin, green eyes, and blonde hair that she dyes a deep red. Her hair is swept over one side of her face, where it trails down to just below her shoulders, while the other side is buzzed or also long, depending on her tastes at the moment. Her facial features are sharp and angular, which only tends to exacerbate how nervous she looks. In terms of her build, she's thin - not quite fit enough to fairly be called lithe, but not unhealthy-looking either. Her left leg is a cyberlimb with red accents.
Clothing
She is almost never seen without a distinctive amount of red in her style. Her armored coat and suit, which she generally wears for running, have loud, angular red accents to them added down the arms and the torso. As a replacement for her old coat, which had a bullet put through it and was subsequently stolen by Saint, she's acquired a jacket upon which those red accents fade into a dynamic pattern of red circuitry on the back, illuminated by internal LEDs.
Likewise, she makes a point to include a notable amount of red in her more casual clothes, usually through accessories or by buying clothes in that main color. It stands out.
Matrix Persona
Red's Matrix Persona carries the same red accents that her physical one does, though this time they're integrated into the persona's body itself, which is usually dressed just as well as she is in meatspace. Her face is shadowed by a red mask. The accents trail off from her and fade away, ethereal ribbons that match her pseudonym - or alternatively, are very on-the-nose, if you want to be sassy about it.
Character Plot Hooks
Here are characteristics of the character that GMs may take advantage of to add complications to runs, or to otherwise use when in use. If you want to use them in unrelated to runs, please ask first.
Aspect | Information | Related Run(s) |
---|---|---|
Doug will remember that. | Doug is a Jarhead related to a corpo who formerly worked for Zeta ImpChem. He failed to stop Ribbon and a crew of other runners from extracting a relative of his. Apparently, Doug holds some pretty intense grudges. | Small Embers |
Friend of Farraday | Red Ribbon did a lot of work for Farraday's Clinic before its destruction. She has a lot of sympathy for the Infected community. The factions that opposed the clinic may remember her thanks to her distinctive appearance and consistent work. | And Love You Shall Find, The Light Before We Land |
Old Friends | At least two members of Ribbon's old gang, Chrome Crash, are still at large. They go by Mercury and Saturn. Ribbon has directly or indirectly killed three others, though not all were associated with each other. | Fort Dumbass, Duvet |
Extermination | Red Ledger, a Barrens gang, suffered a great deal due to the actions of Chrome Crash and Ribbon herself. Now that Repo's caught wind of her presence in Redmond, and even saw her personally, her position is getting hotter by the second. | Duvet, Spray, Pray, and Co-Pay |
Deep in Debt | Red Ribbon owes Arma Remington a significant amount for purging her records from Saeder-Krupp's databases. | ??? |
Trust Not Given | Red Ribbon has gotten in contact with and done work for the mysterious AI known as Von Neumann. Such connections come with a price, and Ribbon's ended up with a cranial bomb for her trouble - until the AI trusts her enough not to talk. | Replicant Encryption |
Burning Name | Red Ribbon's Big Regret, as described by previous sections, has become public among the shadowrunners of the Haven. While some random civilian on the street might not know, maybe people with connections will. The quality has been bought off, but some still might hold resentment. | N/A |
